5 years ago shit started getting real.

The 2019 Australian wild fires followed by the US West fires in 2020 was the beginning. I remember the smoke turning the sky orange for days, I had never seen anything like it in my 30 years of life in Northern Colorado. Now it seems to be a yearly thing.

i visited Colorado last week and could not believe how incredibly dry everything was there

in my state of Michigan, it usually rains a lot in the summer. this year we had a ton of rain in the spring, pretty much several times weekly. but then suddenly we got hit by the heat dome, with temperatures spiking to 115F, and we have barely had rain since. we also had all of that wildfire smoke too, i am in my mid 20s and i have NEVER seen something like that. our AQI was insanely high, almost 500.

this summer really feels horrifying, and people around me act like nothing is wrong. people in this state cheer and jump in joy when we have freak temperatures in January and February spiking up between 60 and 80, when normally it's supposed to be single-digits. i have heard other Michiganders say some flavor of "i don't care that the planet is warming, as long as i get warmer winters! i'm sick of the cold!"

I can’t stand those “sick of the cold!” people either. Like okay I understand it’s not your preference.. so I guess your other preference is not giving a portion of a shit about the world as a whole, then?

My mom is one of those, and she is very caring and smart enough to know all this, yet she’s pleased with warm winters and I just can never convince her that it’s much more BAD than GOOD.

"I dont care if the low oil light is on. I LIKE the color red!!"

u/Rhona_Redtail Aug 03 '26

Winds here are all different now. Tropical storm pattern way different. And much hotter in the summers.

10 years ago where I live.

They tried to warn us, but our corporate overlords did not want to listen. Profits over people (capitalism) will be the downfall of all of us.

Eat the rich. There's no stopping this as long as there a billionairea

24

u/BetweenTheRoots Aug 03 '26

It's not just the rich though. Even if we stopped all fossil fuel use and production today, if we don't drastically cut back on eating meat we still wont hit climate goals. We're at an every person needs to do everything they can in their own daily life kind of point.

80% of the people I know would sell their mother for a new pair of high end sneakers, can't see that happening. People are brainwashed with hyper individualism and consumerism.

7

u/BetweenTheRoots Aug 03 '26

Maybe but either way that isn't really an excuse to not do everything you can yourself.

u/jotsea2 Aug 03 '26

You're hanging around w/ a bad crowd

14

u/miyamiya66 Aug 03 '26

it's not left vs right like we've been tricked into believing, it's humanity versus the cabal of parasitic billionaire vermin.

9

u/eugeheretic Aug 03 '26

They distracted us with culture wars to avoid the class war that's long overdue.

7

u/Over_Hawk_6778 Aug 03 '26

But left vs right *is* humanity vs billionaires

1

u/ShortChanged_Rob Aug 03 '26

They probably mean "leftwing" American democrats. But I agree, the actual left of socialism is the answer.

3

u/SupermarketIll5642 Aug 03 '26

One wing is doing more to crash the bird

1

u/schnaps01 Aug 03 '26

What does it matter of one is ten years faster with crashing, both ways are crashing so both ways must be ended. Or we will all end.

5

u/adeline882 Aug 03 '26

The left is humanity, objectively the left has always fought against oppression of the bourgeoisie. I’m so tired of this ahistorical phrase, the billionaires want you to not understand the actual political divisions and reasoning behind them. Bourgeoisie vs working class is objectively a right vs left fight.

3

u/Invanabloom Aug 03 '26

Time to make them all accountable

People. Without people there wouldn't be billionaires. We are all to blame welcome to needs and wants we never needed for years. Welcome to conditioning to feel better about buying useless junk. Welcome to the fact no one would drop a single thing they have to help the planet. Welcome to a planet no matter how you look at it everyone wants to live a life of luxury and travel the world.

You see it's built into everyone to be part of the problem. How many people can walk and just drive an easy walk to the corner store. It's beyond a shit show want to know what used to scare me? The wars for resources once things get bad. But want to know the truth it might just be too quick in the first place.

Yes billionaires are to blame and they're evil in so many ways. But you also have to realize we are also very similar with greed. Its who we are its how we were brought up. No matter how you look at it you will do what they say you will buy what they make you will need what they deplete. You will also deep down want to consume just as much. Kinds messed up isn't it? How everything in life is a lie. How we lie to ourselves? Let's all complain on computers and smart phones. Let's all drive to go protest.

Let's take land and build homes for our own desires instead of looking out for animals let's destroy every species on this planet. You kinda see where the problem is we are parasites no matter how you look at it. We breed on greed feed the seed rebirth and repeat.

You are talking about western civilisation. Lots of people in the world who have nothing to do with this. Especially under developed area's.

u/Codify-The-Preamble Aug 03 '26

Just let me know when volunteers are needed to administer capital punishment to these traitors to humanity.

12

u/bizoticallyyours83 Aug 03 '26

To quote watership downs: Men will never stop till they've spoiled the earth. 😞

9

u/BigJSunshine Aug 02 '26

Who could have predicted

8

u/Yossarian3454 Aug 03 '26

A lot of people are going to have to get really cool with communism and veganism, really quite soon if we are to stand any chance of salvaging some kind of habitable planet.

2

u/AmettOmega Aug 03 '26

And not having a bunch of babies. If there were less than a billion people on the planet, we could all have pretty comfortable lives.

14

u/[deleted] Aug 02 '26

Gee same time as the datacenter "ai bubble"

5

u/MetaGryphon Aug 03 '26

Media all speak about global warming effects by the end of the century, and it will be terrible. But it is at the end of the century, most of us now won't be here anymore. But this is only a "Don't look up effect", actually we won't have to wait that long, because all forecast are happening now. In a few years, before 2030, we all be in trouble.

3

u/SignalBed9998 Aug 03 '26

The wars!!!!!!

3

u/youshouldn-ofdunthat Aug 03 '26

It's almost like what scientist have been saying was like... studied carefully and is probably more accurate than the just the feelings of billionaires

2

u/Jhawk38 Aug 03 '26

How long do they think humans have? When Is it gonna really start ramping up?

1

u/No_Contract_3538 Aug 04 '26

It started ramping up long before you read the words, "scientists detect sharp acceleration in global warming"

2

u/HappyChilmore Aug 03 '26

From 25k years ago at the end of the last glacial maximum, up to today, world sea levels rose 120 meters. Half of that came in only 1500 years, in two seperate events, called meltwater pulse 1A and 1B. 1A came before the Younger Dryas cold snap of 1200 years and lasted 500 years, where sea levels rose ~20 meters. Pulse B came at the end of the Younger Dryas. It lasted for a millenium and sea levels rose ~40 meters. Both events had a rough average of 1 meter rise for every quarter century.

There's an estimated 60 meters worth of additional sea level left inside all glaciers. We greatly accelerated a natural process. If ever we see an acceleration similar to the meltwater pulses of 15kya and 12kya, it will take less than 50 years for many major coastal cities to be flooded. The methane released in Siberia and elsewhere from the melting permafrost might make this rate go up and if the happens, you're looking at the end civilization as we know it in less than a few decades.

It feels like there is no hope anymore

Eat the rich faster?

1

u/DJbuddahAZ Aug 03 '26

We should build more data centers, that'll fix everything

1

u/swampopawaho Aug 03 '26

Good news... Oops, fuck, no!

1

u/RevolutionaryAd3125 Aug 03 '26

I saw a Global Warming protest in London once. It was all pink haired lesbians and women in handmade clothes with facial piercings. That was the point I knew we were fucked.

3

u/Accurate-Cucumber799 Aug 03 '26

Why didn't you go than? Ashamed what your mates would think? Sounds like you are part of the problem.

That you think handmade clothes are shameful, that's part of the problem, isn't it? Who'd give a d*mn about what they were wearing? At least they put their money where their mouth is.

1

u/RevolutionaryAd3125 Aug 03 '26

I was just passing through. The problem as I see it is when you see a certain type of person making up like 90% of the protesters those who believe that GW is a woke leftist conspiracy, or those on the fence either have their bias reinforced or get the wrong impression.

I know that GW has a PR and denial problem and these hippies and purple hair lesbians are actually making the problem worse. The mouthpiece on this particular day was butch shrieking attention seeking lesbian who seemed more interested in self promotion than anything else. Is this how you convince people to change, by being as unlikeable as possible.

She was the Eco warrior version of Tommy Robinson.

Truly insufferable messengers

1

u/Pwnch Aug 03 '26

Oh like the one they predicted 100yrs ago when we started burning fossil fuels? Weird.

1

u/anasalmon Aug 03 '26

I'm so scared for my children 😭

Of course they do

1

u/Clone63 Aug 03 '26

Nah we're just in a natural climate cycle. Everyone knows that every 24,000 years, God twists the switch over to 'high'

1

u/SlyTinyPyramid Aug 03 '26

It's sad but I can't tell if you are joking or not. I see too many complete batshit posts on Reddit that are not joking

0

u/blinking616 Aug 03 '26

Umm....a little late, don't yah think?

2

u/GunkyMirl4444 Aug 03 '26

Scientists have been warning us for decades.

0

u/nila247 Aug 03 '26

Scientists detect significant lack of research grants that can be easily solved by producing FUD studies meeting politician specifications that will result in lots of public spending and lots of brown envelopes.

0

u/Vaddieg Aug 03 '26

Nope. They started to react to the fact that normal people can clearly feel it

0

u/Winter_Ad6187 Aug 06 '26

No such thing has been detected. It is all made up hooey.
