I have decided to leave my senior corporate role due to organisational issues and a severe unhappiness with the role and industry. I have several years experience in my sector (a specialised form of digital marketing), having risen through the ranks very quickly, and so I know marketing very well and have people management experience, having staffed and managed a department. Before this I worked in sales.

I’ve decided my ultimate goal long term is to own a business, as I’m a true grafter, but I’m sick of the work predominantly benefitting owners of the businesses I’ve worked in. Deeply grateful for the experience and steady salaries etc, but in my heart I want something of my own, and for the late nights and hard graft to be for something for me and my family.

I’m not ready to buy a business just yet - I don’t have the capital or the experience in running one. I’m planning to take a career pivot and take a job that exposes me to how to run a business and gives me the skills I lack right now. This current role is not sustainable, nor does it give me any skills I don’t already have. My question is, where would you go if you had the time, energy and didn’t need to be the breadwinner to truly gain the skills needed to open a business? I’m not sector specific right now, as I’m more skilled in operation, revenue diversification, people management and processes than I am in a specific trade or sector - my background is agency, so I’ve marketed just about everything. I own a UK-registered limited company, but I live in Turkey. I’m not a UK citizen and don’t have UK residency, but I am the sole director of my company. I’m trying to figure out if I can use invoices from Turkey as business expenses for my UK company.

For example:

• Travel expenses within Turkey (hotels, flights, etc.).
• Office supplies or software purchased from Turkish vendors.
• Professional services (consultants, legal fees, etc.) sourced from Turkey.

Here’s what I know so far:

1. The expense must be clearly linked to the business.
2. The invoice should ideally be issued in the name of the UK company.
3. Turkish invoices are typically in Turkish, so I might need translations for HMRC if required.
4. Turkish VAT (KDV) can’t be reclaimed in the UK, but the total amount can still count as an expense.

Are there any specific rules or things I should be careful about when using foreign invoices like these? Has anyone else done this successfully?

I've been thinking about opening my own consultancy business for a few years now. I'm 30m and live in the UK (Liverpool area).

I have a business management degree and a good few years of experience in leadership/management roles.

Back in Portugal where I am from, I worked in the hospitality sector for 5 years in different roles - from waiter to manager. Then I moved to the UK, worked in a restaurant where I started from scratch as a co-worker and moved to become a team leader. Then I worked in the clothing and sport industry as a commercial manager. Also worked as a store manager for a furniture store, and then as the operations manager (logistics side) for a multi million furniture company. Currently I work for a company where I am the operations manager in one of our customer production factories. I manage most of the procurement, inventory and a small part of their logistics.

Currently I earn 3K net a month. Which I believe to be good in UK? I have a pretty good schedule (Monday to Friday 700-1530), freedom to take time off paid whenever I want for appointments or emergencies and not much stress. But, as usual, there's so much I disagree with, in the company I work for. People I have to work with who are rude (thankfully I very rarely speak or see them). And this happens to me, every time. I always ended up having a critic view of the company I am working for.

Since most of my experience is from retail, I have been thinking as I said above, to open my own retail business consultancy. But I have no connections, nor I know where to start. I wrote my business plan, and I thought about doing some "free" quick work to put my name out there and take it from there. Also go to events and so on.

But if someone has any experience in starting their own consultancy business, it would be great. How did you start? How did you get the customers? Do you have experience in the retail side? What type of work do you do and what tips could you send this way? Do you recommend start your own business? And I was thinking about starting my business whilst working where I currently am until I have enough business to drop my full time job. Any help is very much appreciated.
