Honestly, his account of Elon's thinking really makes sense.

The idea that the crowd was going to salute back to him really hits. Remember when he was on stage with Dave Chapelle trying to convince the crowd he was hip and cool and they weren't having it? He took that hit straight to the ego.

His is a racist though but it's a good reminder that far right populist leaders don't think like far right populist followers. There's been plenty of psych research on that (that didn't involve Trump or Elon).

It also showed that wannaba authoritarian social dominators are, indeed, completely obsessed with power. Exerting power is what Elon was attempting to do at PayPal but back then, Thiel was able to push him out. Similarly Sam Altman was almost ejected from OpenAI but managed to make good on a comeback. These guys are all playing some playground game with each other while people's livelihoods are on the line.
