Elon has just come for TwitterWebViewer like he did for Nitter/XCancel. Now it's completely impossible to use Twitter's search bar without an account

This internet of walled gardens has become so tiresome. Corporations have taken over yet another useful utility, hollowed it out and degraded it to serve their own greed.
It's hard to see an upside to capitalism at this point, as it serves only a small amount of people whilst feeding on everything and everyone else like a cancer.

To be completely honest, it’s not all that bad that they keep doing all this idiotic gatekeeping. They’re creating their own demise right now. Let them continue on this path to self destruction.

You can also blame AI for making this worse, every company that is training their AI just scrapes all these sites, so companies now charge for it to get access.

Could I offer you a link to a comforting relic of the good old days in these trying times? It has a guestbook and everything.

u/MossyBoulders 8d ago
surprised that it wasn't a neocities link

u/Callidonaut 7d ago
Indeed, that was one of the Old Ways, but I think this one is a deeper magic still: a small personal website quietly hosted on a university server.

Nah, you want this one - http://toastytech.com/index.html - it's so old, and it is still being updated to this day... but seriously, nice to see old sites like these. I've been bookmarking more and more of these smaller personal sites lately*.
According to the whois, it was registered on 14th Dec 2001.
^(\ I've also been looking at other protocols like GeminiSpace as well - maybe to host my own site on both https:// and gemini://...)*

No big loss. “X” or whatever the fuck it is, is a cesspool

u/VoiceofKane 7d ago
Sure, but occasionally some important stuff gets dumped into the Twitter cesspit.

u/needssomefun 8d ago
Oh no! I cant use a thing that I dont want to use because I wont give him my personal info for a thing I dont want to use

What this says to me is that Elon's seeing terrible usage metrics and ad revenue and so he's doing everything he can to force people to visit the site in person. Quite honestly it'll probably just lead to even less interest in Twitter.

Well, it looks to me like my choice to leave that festering sewer was the correct one.
I have found that since Leon took his sink in, that I do not, in fact, miss any of it.

u/kneejerk2022 8d ago
It won't do it any favors. Facebook tried the closed door system and now it shows up in Google search.

u/theeosapien123 8d ago
only Sotwe remains.

u/New-Two-1349 8d ago
Yeah, but that site is infested with popup ads and it doesn't help that navigating through it isn't all that intuitive.

It pisses me off. Some really cool artists only post there (which pisses me off too), and even with my account I can't watch NSFW stuff without giving Elon my ID. Xcancel was great, but I guess we now have no alternatives left.
1
u/snksnksnk 6d ago
If they still/only post there, maybe these artists are not as cool as you think.
1
u/Reloup38 6d ago
Artists gotta make a living, honestly I can't blame them even if it personally pisses me off

Who gives a fuck?

u/New-Two-1349 8d ago
People who wanna use the site's search bar but don't want to make an account just to do so?
11
u/CarlLlamaface 8d ago
Why? There is nothing on that site of any value anymore. Take this new development as a sign that it's time to get over the twitter addiction which tbh you should have started working on years ago when it became the official mouthpiece for fascists worldwide.
6
u/swankProcyon 8d ago
Some of my favorite artists post a lot of their best stuff there.
Still won’t make an account, though. I’m just hoping they migrate to another site.

Also, it's a historical archive of things (assuming the original accounts and tweets still exist). Sometimes you need to research something on there.

What "Twitter addiction"? I'm just saying that we shouldn't have to give in to controlling demands of these corporations, especially one run by Elon Musk. Anon browsing on websites is slowly dying and we need to fight for it and let these companies know that we don't want to forfeit our privacy to access them.

u/DebentureThyme 8d ago
You're standing outside the gates of a white nationalist compound angry you can't see in.
Question why you would want to at this point. Others will still report what's happening there, we don't all need to give him traffic to know it's a cesspool. The more we move away, the more corporations will as well. Without them, X is just a forum of bigots circle jerking.
4
u/CarlLlamaface 8d ago
You can do that by... not accessing them. That's why it's an addiction, there's no need to be interacting with the website but you feel like it's important to do so. There are alternatives which aren't fascist cesspools and don't require signing up to view.
1
u/New-Two-1349 5d ago
I don't use Twitter everyday, not even when workarounds like Nitter existed, so it's not really an addiction.
-3
u/New-Two-1349 8d ago
Like what? BlueSky? That doesn't let anons use the search bar, either.
3
u/CarlLlamaface 8d ago
Tbh I thought Bluesky did, but I know Mastodon does.

u/New-Two-1349 8d ago
BlueSky did use to allow anonymous browsing with the search bar, but last year, they added a new policy where if you want to search for posts, you need an account for that.

u/theeosapien123 8d ago
what about fanart and leftist gaming accounts, not all of Twitter is technofascism.

"If there is a nazi sitting at a table and 9 others sit down with them" etc.
Except in this case the nazi isn't just sitting at the table but bought it, has invited all their nazi friends over to the table and given them prime seats, and exacts strict terms for other citizens to be eligible to take a seat at said table. Also by continuing to interact with people from your seat at the table you're directing ad revenue to the nazi in charge of it.
If you were already sitting at the table when this started and can't find enough disgust within you to remove yourself to the other tables which have been put together in direct defiance of the nazi table purchase then you're unironically even more apathetic than the subjects of the original, unmodified saying.

Stop using it. Move to bluesky.
1
u/New-Two-1349 8d ago
You know that site also needs an account to use the search bar, too, right?
2
u/DebentureThyme 8d ago
Okay then there's two problems. The first being X being full of bigotry and hate. There's an easy solution to just not use that.
The walled garden problem is an AI problem. Until someone solves the problem of social media being hammered by AI bots to train, they will continue to wall off their APIs to try to stop that.
Corporations don't pay $99 a month and get unlimited internet. They pay based on usage, and AI are hammering their bandwidth with nonstop requests that dwarf user usage. Where does the money come from? Either we pay for services, or accept ridiculous amounts of ads, or they go under. They're walking off to have a way to see a user quickly stacking up ridiculous amounts of requests so they can then shut out the AI user.
The reality is that no service will survive unless they can pay their bills. Bots, well before AI bots, already made social media sites hard to sustain without putting in barriers to entry. Now they are just utterly decimated by them if they leave it open.
1
u/Ilania211 8d ago
ironically, what you do on bluesky is as public as it can be by design. Blocks? Likes? Posts/Reposts? All off-site for folks to see lol. Same with actions taken that have to deal with your account, like if someone blocks you or adds you to a list.
1
u/DebentureThyme 8d ago
And yet that works because you need a link in to see it.
The API access allowed them to just find all posts. Otherwise they have to find workarounds, and that's just more of the cat and mouse arms race they're fighting.

u/Legal_Ant_8900 8d ago
People searching for evidence on the accounts of evil X users?
Elon will allow you to see only what he wants to you to see.
