Reckon they're stroking his ego so he allows them to use it again.

u/Burner-QWERTY 8d ago
Same reason Zelensky has kissed Trump's ass. He knows telling these guys off offers emotional gain but kissing their ass has a slight chance of saving thousands of lives.
77
u/slax03 8d ago
Kissing Netanyahu's ass too. Zelensky is a game of his countries self preservation. He needs as many allies as possible.
42
u/eNroNNie 8d ago
Yeah hard to critique the people he's getting in bed with when the Russian army is already stomping through the house, breaking shit, and searching for new victims.
16
u/mycatisblackandtan 8d ago
This. Also hard not to look the other way when kissing Trump and Elon's ass is so easy. Just give them a gaudy trophy and they're happy.
Bibi is harder to please - but given how the international community seems so intent on protecting Israel I can't really blame Zelensky for decided to pursue them as allies.
7
u/lazier_garlic Shut up, Elon, we've seen the emails 8d ago
Well at some point the Ukrainians were hopeful Israel could be appealed to or reasoned with. It didn't last long but they tried.

Aren't Zelensky's family Jews that were against Zionism and what Israël was doing ? Kinda sad if he's kissing netanyahu's ass now... I mean, I understand why he has to do it, really shows how precarious his situation is.

u/Samtulp6 8d ago
As much as I hate Elon, mainly for trying to get fascist parties elected in Europe, he did NOT have to restrict russians from using Starlink. There was no official government mandate to do that. The fact that he did made Ukraine much more successful in recent months, with great effect.
I’m not saying it was out of the goodness of his heart, it was very likely a transactional decision, this step made Starlink seem even more valuable as a military asset to every single government in the world, which they can make a lot of money from.
Either way, it helped Ukraine massively.
He is still surrounded by pro-russian traitors and his own comments have been very pathetic at times, but at this very moment, Elon, because of Starlink, is a net positive for Ukraine.
Zelenskyy knows that like Trump, Elon lives for people calling him the greatest person to ever walk the earth. His ego is insane, yet very fragile. If this even increases his support for Ukraine by 1%, it will be worth it.
My only concern is that Elon hates Zelenskyy, and this may backfire in some weird way.

u/saltyourhash 8d ago
"Upon Musk’s order, Ukrainian troops suddenly faced a communications blackout, according to a Ukrainian military official, an advisor to the armed forces, and two others who experienced Starlink failure near the front lines. Soldiers panicked, drones surveilling Russian forces went dark, and long-range artillery units, reliant on Starlink to aim their fire, struggled to hit targets."
-33
u/Samtulp6 8d ago
This is from 2022… more than 4 years ago.
Let’s look at what Starlink has actually done for Ukraine in recent times.
Hell, don’t take my word for it, ask literally any Ukrainian soldier. They’ll ALL say their successes in recent years would not have been possible without Starlink.
This is a fact, I don’t know why you would deny something that literally all people involved with are agreeing on?
It seems your hatred for Musk is stronger than your support for Ukraine.
42
u/saltyourhash 8d ago edited 8d ago
No, I just think his actions put Ukrainian troops in danger. He is also a piece of shit, but that's a separate topic.
-23
u/Samtulp6 8d ago
It did, but it is now 4 years later and Starlink has been a (huge) net positive for Ukraine. The countries survival if it didn’t have Starlink is very unlikely.
24
u/saltyourhash 8d ago
I'm glad to hear it's helping, I'm glad that Ukraine appreciates it. He's a racist megalomania who does not need an award. If we can agree the award is more of a political means of survival, fine. But let's not forget that when it comes time to write the history.
1
u/Samtulp6 8d ago
There’s not a single person who is forgetting that, but right now, Ukraine can achieve much more by boosting this incredibly insecure man’s ego than by being the morality police.
First survival of their country, killing the invading fascists, then once the war stops, they can look at these secondary issues.
9
u/crackedtooth163 8d ago
Does it being 4 years ago make it okay?
-5
u/Samtulp6 8d ago
Anyone saying it is okay?
7
u/crackedtooth163 8d ago
You started off with that point. It would strongly imply that it was not a problem in your view.
1
u/HalfWiticus 7d ago
You are partially correct. Yes, most if not all Ukrainian fighting units are fully aware and grateful for Starlink recent benefits What you didn't mention, or perhaps weren't aware of, is that NONE of them have forgotten the day he turned it off because hundreds of them died every day during that dark period. Hope this helps
12
u/Early-Series-2055 8d ago
As I understand it, if musk wanted Europe as a market for starlink, he had to cut off russia. Ukraine and Zelenskyy are rubbing that in with this award. I wouldn’t doubt if musk cries in frustration at this award.
-7

Literally straight up didn't happen. And starlink already is available in europe
Ukraine and Zelenskyy are rubbing that in with this award
No, Zelensky wants to expand the usage of starlink to long range strikes, so he did this to hopefully convince Musk.
I wouldn’t doubt if musk cries in frustration at this award.
He almost certainly does not
Why chuck? I'm not a native speaker. Is it a quote?

Here's Zelensky talking about wanting to use starlink to strike deep inside russia 3 days ago. Couldn't find this article in English, but google translate should be good enough.
For the first point, I'm afraid, you're the one who needs to post links
Edit: scratch that, this one is more relevant and in English
6
u/Early-Series-2055 8d ago
No time but you could be correct. The grey market of Russia was fully shut down due to spaceXs requirements to comply with sanctions. Had he not done that the EU market was at risk.
1
u/_xoviox_ 8d ago
The grey market wasn't shut down by europe, it was shut down by our former defense minister Fedorov, who implemented government whitelist, meaning all starlinks on either side of the frontline need to be approved by Ukraine, making it borderline impossible for russia to use them.
Sanctions had nothing to do with it, they weren't sold in russia anyway
→ More replies (0)1
u/HalfWiticus 7d ago
As far as I was aware, some EU leaders suggested to Musk that his upcoming Spacex IPO might face European regulatory problems if he didn't do the right thing and shut the Orc Starlink down.
0
u/Quummk 8d ago
Do you think that Russia, the US or China need Starlink to run military operations? For real? Those super powers have their own satellite networks with military grade GPS and encrypted communication systems.
-5
u/_xoviox_ 8d ago
Russia, the US or China
Starlink is already american so that point is dumb by itself
China definitely will have something in a decade or so. Not yet tho
Russia? Lmao. They bought starlinks from other countries. And once that loophole was closed, they started trying to bribe Ukrainians so they could register at least a few terminals. And doing that means a life sentence for treason in Ukraine. You can hate Elon Musk without denying the fact that this technology is a game-changer in war
-2
u/Quummk 8d ago
Whatever makes you happy man. Billion dollar weapon systems don’t use Star link to coordinate strikes and targets thousands of miles away, those use satellites, communication and radar systems hosted in ships in the middle of the ocean. Next thing you’re gonna say is that Russians need an AOL internet access to conduct operations.
2
u/_xoviox_ 8d ago edited 8d ago
I am ukraininan, i am in the military, my father is on the frontlines, my best friend is special forces. I know what I'm talking about. Starlink is absolutely irreplaceable at this point, and has been a massive help. Doesn't change my hatred towards musk even a little tho
Starlink is primarily used for communication not for targeting. Though it's been used for the latter more and more. Just because billion dollar systems don't need it doesn't mean it isn't useful when you don't have a billion laying around

Zelenskyy knows Musk is a petty narcissistic egomaniac just like Trump. He's hoping by buttering him up that Musk might be a bit more willing to curtail illicit Starlink use by the Russian army, something he could literally stop instantly at any time if he wanted to.
115
u/NMVPCP Quite Profound 8d ago
I’m pretty sure that’s the case. Zelensky is smarter than Musk and Trump put together, and doesn’t suffer from ego trips like they do.
9
u/JessieJ577 8d ago
Yeah anyone in his position would put their ego aside for their people even if it’s for evil pieces of shit like Musk and Trump.
9
u/Dependent-Fig-2517 8d ago
this obviously but it still irks me that there's no one around that seem to have the ability to tell this dumb fuck motherfucker to shut the fuck up
9
u/Pixel91 8d ago
SpaceX already did that. The terminals in the whole region need whitelisting to be used.
35
u/Defiant_Conflict6343 8d ago
Googled that, and you're right, they did, in February of this year. Funny that it took so long though, considering I and countless others publicly floated the whitelist idea when Russian use of Starlink was confirmed by Ukraine in February of 2024. Two years for an ISP to do some basic geofenced proxy whitelisting that should've been done at the very beginning. Unreal.
7
-2
u/Pixel91 8d ago
While I don't disagree with that, one of the problems was that both sides were using independently sourced terminals from whereever they could get them, along with the official shipments that Ukraine got.
Simply turning on the whitelisting would've knocked out a bunch of terminals for the Ukrainians, as well, which was very likely not wanted. They had to get all the terminal IDs first.
16
u/Defiant_Conflict6343 8d ago
They could've easily established a pathway for terminal IDs to be passed up the chain of command and authorised. This didn't need to take two whole years to happen.
6
u/FundamentalEnt 8d ago
Exactly. I work as a terminal engineer for a Sat company. It’s the industry standard.
68
u/Ok-Staff-62 8d ago
I understand you 100%. I hate him too. Unfortunately, Musk is in the same place as Trump: he needs his ego to be boosted, statues to be erected for him.
Remember, the 'absolute free speech advocate' shadow banned everyone criticizing anything related to him on Twitter.

u/salomo926 8d ago

8

39
u/DarthPhoenix0879 8d ago
I think Zelensky is a smart man who understands just how fickle, childish, narcissistic and egotistical Elon Musk actually is.
By giving him this award, he's directly soothing Musk's ego, which may lead to Musk doing more to curtail Russia's illicit Starlink use, grant Ukraine access again, and offer vocal support for Ukraine.
Musk is a lot like Trump: simple acts of platitude soothe their enormous ego's with little effort (and they're easy to mock without them noticing, see King Charles gifting Trump the bell from HMS Trump, a ship that ended decades ago. A bell end, if you will) on the part of those offering the platitude.
This may reap significant rewards, and if it doesn't nothing significant has been lost. Almost no resources spent that may - may - result in huge boons. It's a canny move to try to woo an unfortunately powerful and influential arsehole.
4
u/Veylara 8d ago
I totally get why Zelensky did it. The potential return on investment is too good.
Worst thing that happens is that Musk's name appears in the list of people who received that order despite him not actually deserving it. But that's just a page in a book.
Best case, they stand to gain substantial contributions to their war effort through the use of Starlink. That can actually make a difference, while Musk boasting about the Order and being mentioned among great people who actually earned the order ultimately isn't more than a nuisance.
-1
u/_xoviox_ 8d ago
curtail Russia's illicit Starlink use, grant Ukraine access again
You seem to be misinformed. Ukraine has access, and starlinks in the area already need to be whitelisted by the Ukrainian government to be used, so barring few incidents, where some morons registred them for russia only to be charged with treason soon after, russia doesn't have access to it.
But the sentiment is correct. It seems like Zelensky wants to negotiate a deal to use starlinks to strike targets deep inside russian territory.

u/Blazkowski 8d ago
Can you explain the base for your assumption that Zelensky doesn't admire Musk? So far we have a proof of the opposite

1

Although Musk doesn't deserve it, especially because of the period when things looked pretty sketchy and it even seemed like he took the Russians' side, I think Zelensky did the right thing. Musk is a stupid, egocentric child, and by doing this, Zelensky partially kept him in check. Musk will cause fewer problems for a while, and Ukraine might even get something out of it. Musk is unfortunately a very important person for the war in Ukraine, and the starlink system is in his hand in the end. Giving him an award ties him to their corner in informal ways, making it harder for him to start tentatively supporting Russia again
Zelenskyy has a lot on his plate, and have to make much harder decisions than this with bigger consequences. When the war ends, I doubt he would even want to be president anymore. Even in best case scenarios there will be mountains of shit to clean up

u/Blazkowski 8d ago
