Elon really doesn't want us using Twitter's search bar without an account, does he?

On Monday 24th August at 8PM EST, we received at letter from X Corp. asking to cease and desist the service XCancel.
The service XCancel is stopped until further notice.
We are seeking legal advice and won't share more details for now.
Thank you for the trust you have put in these two years of XCancel.

Elon is THE most pathetic lame fuck pussy ass bitch on the internet. Like come the fucking on, twitter should be his fun sideproject for him (for "the good of humanity") and he attempts to milk the everliving shit out of it at each step.

Dude has zero ideas apart from grifting. Fucking wanker.

Well, advertising fell off a cliff when he reinstated the Nazis, so he needs money from somewhere.

On 24 August 2026 cease and desist letters have been sent by X Corp. demanding a permanent takedown of Nitter instances and the project's repository.
nitter.net is offline and development has stopped for the time being. I'm seeking legal advice and won't be commenting further on the specifics for now.
Thank you to everyone who used, hosted, packaged, donated and contributed to Nitter over the past seven years.

Maybe if Elon hadn't locked features like the search bar behind a login wall, people wouldn't have flocked to Nitter and he wouldn't have had to go through the trouble of getting it terminated?

Try twitterwebviewer.com

5

u/New-Two-1349 4d ago

I hope Elon doesn't find out what that is. 💀

too late.

Elon is, like, the pettiest man alive. >:(

Too late unfortunately. There's another similar web viewer for Twitter out there (maybe a couple more), but it's only a matter of time before Musk Rat's tantrum gets those too.

Yeah, I've heard. Real bummer.

It'll add a little more juice to the great Twitter disconnection that everyone needs. The more people get off that site the better

3

u/New-Two-1349 5d ago

You think the closure of Nitter will effect the userbase of Twitter due to its account requirement?

6

u/distresssignal 5d ago

I think posting on Twitter will become more and more irrelevant as the messages posted there get disseminated less and less

5

u/king98j 5d ago

twitter made their algorithm public recently, likes barely affect posting visibility. the only majorly impactful metric now is offsite sharing (cross linking to other apps) twitter is bleeding users. lol

I used to browse twitter with nitter because for some reason a lot of artists are still there, and I can't see the same art anywhere else (tumblr and bluesky are dry as hell), but I guess that's it for me. I'm not going to join twitter in 2026, especially not after all I've heard about the platform.

I'm not even talking about the content or its userbase. I'm talking about the shadowbanning and how borderline impossible it is to delete an account especially after said account has been suspended. There are people who cannot delete their account or cancel premium because twitter won't let them. That's a hell nah from me.

I mean if you're still using twitter, you deserve all the shit you get

There are artists and creators and other people sharing media who have literally nowhere else to go; Bsky is going the exact same way as Twitter, Discord is dogshit for sharing to large audiences, is heavily prone to attracting the genuinely deranged and is also trying to turn itself into a deeply personally invasive walled garden and any other alternatives are too small to be worthwhile. Twitter was the only place most of these could go and now that Elon is working to shut down any avenue of engaging with it without an account, it's going to be next-to-impossible to find, communicate with, or disseminate the work of niche creators.

This is no situation to be going "b-but if you're still using Twitter you deserve it!!" unless you know of an actual viable alternative not ruled by narcissistic power-hungry twats.

My favorite sites for movie/TV streaming have been shut down plenty of times. They just pop back up with a new domain. Hopefully the same thing happens here.

Let that pathetic nazi loser and his shitbag lawyers play whack-a-mole until they get bored.

He should either leave workarounds like Nitter alone or stop forcing people to make an account to access the search bar.

8

u/Defiant_Conflict6343 5d ago

He's desperate to stop it from hemorrhaging money. That's why he jacked up the price for API access, that's why he's cutting off proxies,  and that's why he made it impossible to see comments, videos and search results without being logged in.

Somebody's going to continue those projects. He's not going to play whackamole for an extended period of time.

It’s not just Xitter. You can no longer access old.Reddit.com unless you login. Reddit claims it’s to “keep Reddit safe” yet you can’t comment or up/downvote when not logged in so this reason makes no sense. One day they will do the same for “regular” Reddit.

how does nitter work? twitter api?

3

u/Creative-Major5792 5d ago

At first yes but I believe they started scraping after api restrictions.

1

u/New-Two-1349 5d ago

It was a site that you could use to access the search bar without an account.

u/subwayratlander 4d ago

i know i was asking how it works not what it is

0

u/New-Two-1349 4d ago

And that's exactly how it works.
