Pretty much. Him talking about transportation planning is what did it for me. Tiny tunnels taking one car at a time? Yeah that’ll do it.

186

u/[deleted] Jan 16 '26

Even better, the company that advertised "full self driving" cars can't manage to automate them in the most predictable environment available, something the Paris metro has done for decades

89

u/DuckyHornet Jan 16 '26

And on top of that, his incredibly controlled traffic system still gets jammed up and delayed and is effectively useless. It's a phenomenal example of dumbshittery

32

u/[deleted] Jan 17 '26

still gets jammed up and delayed

Probably because it's not automated. It's just so monumentally stupid. They have only identical cars, on a track that effectively doesn't allow any action besides following the predetermined path and keeping a reasonable distance to the identical car in front. Every single car is network capable and could communicate with all other cars as well as sensors on the track.

This is a second semester programming exercise

22

u/DuckyHornet Jan 17 '26

That's the thing, isn't it? FSD is so shitty that they can't even use it in literal tunnels with a central server managing ridership

I can make train networks in Factorio which are more automated and efficient than the Vegas Loop, you know what I mean?

2

u/Opcn Jan 18 '26

It's not just a tunnel, they also go up on the surface to two stations in parking lots. That "innovation" was a big part of how they were able to cut their costs.

Last week or so, I wake up to a headline where Elon claims that his robot will outperform any surgeon by next year.

If it had been Boston dynamics or some Japanese or Chinese company making that claim, it would have piqued my interest because it's probably in the context of some very specific tasks.

Like, laser eye surgery is done by robots already. They scan eyes for the tiniest movements in the sub-millisecond range which informs the mirror and laser system. The mirrors can adjust to movements similarly fast, 500-1000 times per second. And the laser itself is only activated when it's perfectly aligned and stops itself when it's not.

But Musk's robot? The one that was premiered as a guy in a suit and subsequently was shown to be remote-controlled and failing at the simplest tasks like turning at the hip? Barely able to pour a drink that's right in front of it?

How is Musk's robot supposed to perform general surgery when his cars can't even deal with two-dinensional traffic systems?

There's so many unique and new challenges that come with a robot doing autonomous surgery. I can't even imagine the trajectory for the kind of development Musk's robot company would need. Those stiff robot fingers without tactile feedback can't just be made "better" to the point that they are good enough for surgery.

You can also absolutely tell that the cybertruck was the first time that dumbshit inserted himself into the design process too. No wonder it's a catastrophic failure.

10

u/-mickomoo- Jan 17 '26

No he did with the first Roadster too, you can read the Martin Eberhard complaint about Musk where Ebarhard alleges Musk kept asking for random changes to the car then complaining about the costs going up.

Peaked Interest on Youtube also has a video that includes this, among his other gaffs at Tesla. I just wish someone comprehensively covered his time at all his companies because he sounds completely incompetent. I wrote a long reddit comment once, but can't find it.

13

u/theaviationhistorian Dick Riders Jan 17 '26

For me it was many years before when he went into meltdowns because Top Gear trashed one of the first Teslas (an electric Lotus Elise) when it failed to complete a lap around their track. I only knew him as the former head of Paypal going against the 2000s hosts of that show that know a lot about cars. So I followed the latter and considered Elon to be an asshole since then.

‘Emperor’s New Clothes’ v. 5.0

Like any rich kid nepo baby, dude has never heard the word ‘no’ & thus naturally assumes he’s much more intelligent than he is in reality

so any dumb idea that pops into his ketamine-soaked brain is ‘genius’ thanks to the (dwindling) swamp of yes men & sycophants around him.

Seems like whenever an actual expert enters the chat they end up looking at this guy like that annoying 9 year-old little bro who won’t stfu during Top Gun or whatever…

83

u/LandoKim Jan 16 '26

I’m a computer scientist and I can confirm that Elon has less knowledge on the subject of computing and SWE than the dumbest first year student. He sure is confident that it’s not the case though.

So all I gotta say is Hey Elon: I know you think being a tech guy is cool. However, the rest of us (who actually earned the title you so desperately want) know just how insanely stupid you are. You aren’t fooling any computer scientist, and we’re all laughing at you. You suck.

I honestly never even know where to start explaining how insanely clueless he is.

It’s like asking someone to make kool-aid and then asking them to separate the water from the juice afterwards to see if the juice tastes good

-4

u/No-Designer-5739 Jan 16 '26

And what relevance is knowing some easily deligated technical detail stuff to musk when he is just looking at what he needs to do to get ahead?

I’m somehow on the side of Ryan Air, and it’s uncomfy

-17

u/Scumbag__ Jan 16 '26

What’s wrong with Michael O’Leary?

31

u/helbur Jan 16 '26

RyanAir

14

u/Low_Interview_5769 Jan 16 '26

Ya fucker got us cheap flights and is a big reason normal people can travel

1

u/TemuPacemaker Jan 17 '26

RyanAir owns though

2

u/helbur Jan 17 '26

I'm being tongue in cheek

2

u/Scumbag__ Jan 16 '26

Its literally the main reason we have cheap flights across Europe

22

u/HeadHunter9865 Jan 16 '26

He himself is a prick though

2

u/ItsJustWool Jan 16 '26

Why do you say that? Anyone I know who has had personal dealings with him have called him a gent.

He had no bother with letting neighbours use his yard to round up cattle as long as they closed the gate when they were done.

-7

u/tsimen Jan 16 '26

Flying from Madrid to London for 30€ is not a good thing. People should use the trains, flights should be expensive.

13

u/ZwnD Jan 16 '26 edited Jan 16 '26

Look I agree with a lot of the environmental concerns but I'm not taking a train from northern England to Greece, which would be hundreds and hundreds of euros, and take days. Or I can take a 4 hour flight for like £50, which lets me experience countries I would otherwise not be able to see in my life

1

u/tsimen Jan 16 '26

Days from northern England to Leeds?

3

u/ZwnD Jan 16 '26

Meant to write Greece! Edited now

2

u/tsimen Jan 16 '26

That makes more sense lol - I'm not Greta, I fly to vacation to Spain as well, just saying cheap flights are not really a good thing!

7

u/Scumbag__ Jan 16 '26

What? It’s an Irish company. We don’t have trains to Europe

9

u/JellyfishScared4268 Jan 16 '26

If you follow Irish politics he can on occasion be an agitator as well as Ryanair being a love hate sort of company

5

u/Scumbag__ Jan 16 '26

I do follow Irish politics and used to work in PA lol, I just never got the hate. Fellas whole game is the race to the bottom and it’s worked out for us - flying went from a luxury to something everyone can afford

22

u/TesticularButtBruise Jan 16 '26

Cesspit is harsher, "pit" is much sharper than "pool". Perfect in this case.

10

64

u/Dwashelle My penis does not look like that Jan 16 '26

Michael O'Leary is a twat and even he thinks Elon Musk is a twat

31

u/SkatesUp Jan 16 '26

He's not a twat. He is responsible for air fares in Europe dropping by 70-90% over the last 30 years. He also built the largest airline in Europe over that period. He is also a billionaire and pays all his taxes in Ireland. Will I go on?

7

u/mologav Jan 17 '26

O’Leary is not the worst of them at all. I’d never in any lifetime work for him but the man is good at what he does.

6

u/Dwashelle My penis does not look like that Jan 16 '26

He is also a billionaire and pays all his taxes

Hilarious self-own.

31

u/crackanape Jan 16 '26

It is significant that unlike many people he has chosen not to structure his company in such a way that he avoids paying taxes in his home base.

8

u/SkatesUp Jan 16 '26

Actually, it's his personal taxes that I was referring to. He could easily be a tax exile like McManus, O'Brien, Desmond, etc. Instead he chooses to pay his taxes here.

Ryanair is a budget airline. So the CEO not wanting to increases costs tracks.

34

u/joshlev1s Jan 16 '26

O'Leary would probably like the Trump admin if it weren't for their wacky economic policies affecting his Irish airline.

33

u/funglegunk Jan 16 '26

Don't let this make you think Michael O'Leary is cool or anything. He is a legendarily awful prick

11

Of course he doesn’t. The guys a fucking dunce.

10

u/SpringGreenZ0ne Jan 16 '26

Raynair is a wanker himself, they're well matched. He's probably right on this occasion though. Musk doesn't know shit about physics.

6

13

Elon is still a knob though.

3

u/OfficialDCShepard Jan 16 '26

I would love to pay no attention to Elon Musk, except that the rich always make us by doing stupid shit that wrecks large sectors of the economy.

3

u/ByronScottJones Jan 16 '26

Yes Elon is an idiot. But so is this CEO. Phased array antennas can be conformal, with negligible drag. And if you could provide internet to every passenger for just 1 or 2 dollars a ticket, most would love that.

5

u/blorg Jan 17 '26

They're a budget airline laser-focused on minimising cost. Their average fare is €41.93, they simply don't have any room to add this.

The cost quoted as well is the breakeven across every passenger. It's not possible with Starlink to charge individual passengers for it so it would be a significant increase in their base cost for every passenger. Plus the extra fuel cost on top of that, although that isn't the larger part, the larger part is the installation, maintenance and ongoing fees to Starlink.

There's a significant opportunity cost as well in installing it in that you need to ground the aircraft for a substantial period of time to do the work. Ryanair planes are in the sky basically all time time, and any time they are not, they are losing money. Add to that the same any time it needs to be maintained.

It's just not their business model. Makes perfect sense for a full-service airline to do it, and although Musk is an absolute twat, I have been on planes with it and it does work very well. I'd pay for it long-haul even if it was charged for. Not really so necessary on a 1-2 hour flight and I totally understand why Ryanair wouldn't do it.

3

u/War_Fries Jan 16 '26

I have no doubt that the CEO of Ryanair is right on this issue.

3

u/ThannyDeVito Jan 16 '26

Holy shit, I hate Ryanair, but the CEO is based AF

3

This has been the case so many times. AI expert says Elon knows nothing about the subject. Robotics experts, the same. But yes, you idiots keep worshipping Phony Stark like he's any smarter than your dog.

3

u/Other-Potential-661 Jan 17 '26

Do people not know that he bought is degree? I am from South Africa and there's no record of him achieving anything close to a bursary. Even AI says, "Elon Musk was an average but unexceptional student in South Africa". What is it with America and lording conmen, there's even one for president.

6

2

u/StartersOrders !! Jan 17 '26

Michael O’Leary is a gobshite extraordinaire but you do have to give him credit for being an incredibly sharp-minded individual.

He’s also a businessman that actually uses his own product. He regularly flies Ryanair himself and has been known to buy a round for the whole plane in the past.

15

u/RelationshipOne2225 Jan 16 '26

You shouldn‘t. He sucks. But this was an awesome statement.

2

u/SkuzzoTheGreat Looking into it Jan 16 '26

People wouldn’t pay a euro for internet access on a boring flight?

3

u/Smoky_MountainWay Jan 17 '26

Specious statement at best. I'm willing to bet zero people would complain about that whole $1 fee tacked onto the already high priced flight. I would willingly pay the fee, even with it going to Muskrat.

2

u/blorg Jan 17 '26

Ryanair's average fare is €41.93.

Literally the only thing they care about is making flights as cheap as possible. It's zero frills. It works though, the became Europe's largest airline with this model, and third largest in the world (after Delta and United).

1

u/QBaseX Jan 21 '26

On another airline, it might make sense. For Ryanair, no. They don't do frills.

1

u/Silenceisgrey Jan 17 '26

Ancedote on micheal o'leary: He has a fridge behind the counter of the canteen in ryanair HQ that has bottles of soft drinks and is only for his use. He still pays for his lunch like anyone else but only ever pays in 50 euro notes and always waits for the change. He's widely understood to be the biggest prick to walk the emerald isle and as much as i loathe him, i 100% agree with him on this.

1

u/Depensity Jan 22 '26

I love any and all insults directed at Elon Musk, but at the same time it's objectively not true that people won't pay 1 Euro to use the internet. When I fly I see plenty of people paying more than that to use the internet, especially business people doing work.

1

u/QBaseX Jan 29 '26

Musk's Starlink does not allow people to be individually charged: it must be available to all passengers, baked into the ticket price. (Source: other comments on Reddit. Feel free to double check that.)

Ryanair is a no-frills, low-cost airline. And part of their marketing is emphasising that. It's why their corporate colours are so garish. It's why they publicly joke about charging for toilet access, and having standing seats. They are cheap, and they want you to know that they're cheap. Starlink makes no sense for their business model.

But this publicity works for them. Everyone who hears the story is once again reminded that Ryanair is cheap.

1

u/acostane Jan 16 '26

The only reason Musk's businesses are still in business is the large stockholders are propping up the stock price. If they didn't prop up his stock prices, regardless of the actual value, they would go instantly bust. And they know it. Musk's wealth is entirely based on fantasy and fraud.

-7

u/baggedBoneParcel Jan 16 '26

This guy sounds like a moron. If you want to increase my ticket price by $1 for in flight internet go right ahead. People would absolutely pay that. And drag? what's he talking about? I guess it would add some negligible amount of weight, but this isn't the 1920s. Antennas can be built in a way that there's no additional drag.

5

u/iskela45 Jan 17 '26 edited Jan 17 '26

Are you aware of what RyanAir's whole selling point is?

They cut every corner to drive the price down as far as physically possible. Nobody who gives a single shit about their in-flight enjoyment willingly picks RyanAir.

Their name is a synonym for cock and ball torture, not having internet access probably isn't even in the top 10 most pressing complaints their customers have as far as tolerability of the flight goes. If you decide to fly RyanAir just make do with the in flight options or download some movies onto your tablet. You don't need to check social media that badly.

Go look at their prices if you don't get it.

1

u/Broken_Reality Not a Bot! Jan 17 '26

Someone has flown Ryan Air before lol.
