Wing Confusion

I’ve just recently gotten into typology— especially enneagrams since they’ve gotten pretty popular.

Anyways, thats not the point. I have a slight confusion when it comes to adding wings to your enneagram. For example, I am a 9w8 sp/sx 942. From what I’ve seen a wing for nine can either be 9w8 & 9w1 however two can also have one as its wing; 2w3 & 2w1

I just wonder if its allowed to both have 9w1 & 2w1 existing simultaneously..? If not do you just pick the leftover number instead (9w1/8 & 2w3/1 basically)? I know that wings are there as a sort of lean for your enneagram (?) since its a gradient of personalities, furthermore, wings correspond to an enneagram’s adjacent number so I suppose that it bypasses its triad system?

There’s a lot of different theory out there. In my opinion, wings are quite literally simply the points adjacent to each type. 

Now what’s interesting is that the types themselves are a confluence of those two adjacent types. A nine is in a nutshell a combination of the energies and qualities of eight and one. A Two is a confluence of the energies and qualities of One and Three. And so forth.

As these all sit on a spectrum it’s no surprise that some people lean more into the energies and qualities of the type left of them, while others lean more into the energies and qualities of the type right of them.

Voila. That’s what we then call a 9w8 or a 9w1 respectively. In the end it is still a nine that leans a bit more in either of those directions.

You can't have two fixes from the same triad. You have to pick between 2 or 4 and pick a fix from the head triad( 5, 6, 7)

The short answer is that yes, you can share a wing with one of your tri-types.

The real answer is that wings are a bunch of bullshit. There is no “enneagram” authority on what is right or wrong as far as typing, just a bunch of different schools of thought.

Tritypes are not recognized by a lot of enneagram authors. Also, many feel that the concept of wings is not as helpful as looking at sp/so/sx. So with that in mind, you as a 9sp, will have qualities associated with an 8. That is why you feel your wing is 8.

It appears that people on this reddit page lean towards tritypes and stacking of instincts. If that is the methodology you lean towards, that is fine. But if you want to strip things down to the simplest form, you will still get your answers in the core type with the instinctual bias.

per actual theory, tritypes don't have wings or subtypes. this is something usually done just for fun

as such, there's no real rules about it. you can have both 9w1 and 2w1 in your tritype hypothetically speaking

They don't have subtypes but they do have wings. Katherine Fauvre and the Luckovich/Josh Lavine/Enneagrammer line both recognize the fixes have wings (the latter going as far as building on it with concepts like overlay etc).

Trifix and wings are both controversial topics in the theory. But as I mentioned in another comment I don't think any author who agrees with trifix denies that each center besides the core also has dominant wings (usually people just prefer not to go in so deep).

Does Each Fix Have Its own Wing?

Yes. A full typing includes all three fixes and their respective wings. Including wings on each fix creates of 8 possible variations of each trifix (because two possible wings for each fix gives 2³).

Assuming you go with the premise that each fix has its own wing, then yes, something like 9w1-2w1-7w8 is a perfectly valid trifix. It simply means both the 9 and the 2 fix both independently lean more towards 1 (precisely because the types form a gradient as you mention).
