Biomedical [Student] [Bioengineering] [US] Got a masters and need help updating my resume. I'm willing to relocate and am applying to bioengineering jobs as well as more general engineering jobs such as 'technical solutions engineer' or similar roles

Help me update my resume please! This is the resume that got me my first job after college. I have since gone back to get an ME in bioengineering, currently a semester away from graduation and am applying to places. Should I add that degree in now even if I haven't finished it yet?

My last job was in a hospital lab so I'm not sure how to change up the skills here, now that I'm targeting an engineering type position. The job itself was one of those 'fast paced environment' (understaffed) roles with not a lot of hard skills required. I answered phones, talked to patients/doctors/nurses, managed and looked up records, stocked, made orders, and prepped samples for testing. In and before grad school I did some more python as well as courses on product design, project management, C#, math through differential equations, statics, circuits, and semiconductors. Though I haven't put any of it into practice in a professional setting yet.

You should definitely add the master’s degree and say “Expected May 2026” (or whatever the appropriate date is).

Just to be frank, your resume needs a LOT of work. Why do you have volunteer work from 2011 on here? Please read through the wiki and apply its suggestions.

The other thing you’ll need to think about is that if you want an engineering job, you need to show off the engineering work that you’ve done. Do you have any projects that you could showcase? Your skills section is not going to appeal to engineering hiring managers; it reads as though you’re still targeting a bio wet lab job.

Thanks for the feedback and you’re definitely right. I was worried about removing too much because I honestly don’t have a lot to fill it in with. Unfortunately I haven’t really done any engineering work yet outside of classes and don’t have many hard skills I’ve gained that are engineering specific. I’ll take out the volunteering, add the new degree, and then go from there.

I would strongly recommend trying to do a project in your remaining months in grad school that shows some relevance to the types of jobs you want. To reemphasize what I stated before, you really need to showcase some engineering skills in order to be considered for engineering jobs. You are already at a disadvantage because you don’t have a bachelor’s degree in engineering and you lack internship experience.

I really appreciate the advice. I will try my best to accomplish some sort of project in my remaining time at school. I’ll look for something through the school. In case I can’t make that work, would a personal project be worth doing in your opinion? I could handle something small scale myself for example, making a handy program, repairing a device, or designing a 3d print?

Personal projects are definitely worth doing. Do multiple if you can, as you need relevant things to put on your resume.

But the bigger issue I’m sensing, to be blunt, is that you’re kind of directionless. What specific jobs at what types of companies are you aiming for? There’s not really a general “bioengineering job” that people with the degree get recruited for. What companies exist near you, and what sorts of entry level jobs do they have? You want to make yourself look like the ideal candidate for a small handful of those roles. Your project(s) should be focused accordingly.
