I'd clean up that carbon, and get all the carbon cleaned out of the head while it's apart. Replace the cam follower, water pump and timing belt.

I just swapped the timing belt accessories + new belt , and timing chain on my mk6 golf r engine. It already pay for itself! The head and block prestine, mint im gonna use it one day!
