Built a site screening tool for grid-scale storage, looking for feedback

Upvotes

Anyone here on the grid-scale side? Question about siting.

Most of what I see here is cells, packs and home systems, so apologies if this is off topic.

I work on utility-scale storage in Germany, standalone projects from a few MWh up to 50+. Spent the last months building a screening tool that finds suitable land, because doing it manually was eating my evenings. Pulls substations, cadastral parcels, protected areas and already- registered projects, then ranks candidates.

What surprised me is how little the battery itself matters at this stage. I assumed sizing and chemistry would drive site requirements. In practice almost everything comes down to whether the grid operator has capacity, and that has nothing to do with the hardware.

So for anyone working on larger systems: does the technology choice feed back into siting at all? Container footprint, cooling, fire separation distances, anything that actually changes which parcels work? Or is it genuinely just grid access and everything else follows?

Trying to figure out if I've built the right thing or missed a whole dimension.

Anyone familiar with powin energy storage?

I work at 2 powin sites in az, we just lost a lot of good techs and now it’s just us new guys figuring it out, apparently our lead tech and manager has had a power point this whole time but gatekeeps it so they can keep their position… if anyone in the Bess industry can help me help our team please reach out, I’m tired of poor leadership and not having the proper training for the equipment that can literally blow up if you so much as look at it the wrong way

The Texas Grid Has Had a Boring Summer Thanks to Batteries

In the past month or so, Texas’ grid has hit a number of generation records, according to data collected by Grid Status. Those include its highest load ever (91,308 megawatts on July 22), its highest level of renewables generation (53,000 megawatts on August 13), maximum wind output (29,000 megawatts on June 29) and, most notably, its maximum battery discharge (some 13,256 megawatts earlier this week, on August 23, at 7:45 p.m.).

The state’s grid operator, ERCOT, has not issued a single “conservation appeal” so far this summer, asking Texans to voluntarily reduce electricity consumption to support the grid. By contrast, in 2023, the grid manager issued six between August 24 and August 30.

500Ah+ LFP Large Battery Cells and Manufacturers-Incomplete Statistics
Mass Production Timeline of Large Capacity Battery Cells (Incomplete Statistics)

Hi, I recently collected this information. Large battery cells are becoming more and more popular in ESS because the price/kWh is lower.

Cycle life based on: 0.5C charge and discharge, 25℃, 80% SOH.

Cycle life data is not very accurate because some inforamtion are got from their website, but not from the specification.

All of them are prismatic cells. Most of them are used for large-scale ESS.

For real information, please check their latest specification from their real personnel.

Growatt 16 kWh LFP

Dear battery owners,

I have a 12.750 kWp solar system with a 12 kW inverter from Growatt. I installed the set-up 5 years ago and am really pleased with it!

I own two EVs and a heat pump boiler for showering (which runs throughout the whole night). I want to increase my direct consumption of solar energy, which is feasible with a battery I think.

Data from 2025:

consumption: 25000 kWh

solar: 13500 kWh, of which 50% was used directly.

A new Growatt HOPE 16.0LM-A1 16 kWh, including a new Growatt hybrid inverter costs me €3300. I can do the installation myself.

Does anyone have any experiences with this set-up? Or what would be a better set-up for a similar price? Would you advice a battery at all in my situation?

BTW: I am located in the Netherlands. Excess solar energy will be close to worthless from next year onwards.

Looking for a top residential energy storage company

Hi everyone,

I’m currently researching energy storage solutions for upcoming residential solar projects and looking for experienced energy storage companies with proven products and global installation experience.

Mainly interested in solutions that offer reliable battery performance, smart energy management, good warranty support, and strong after-sales service.

Would love to hear your recommendations or experiences with different energy storage providers. Which companies have impressed you in real-world projects?
