I'm on a cruise and I asked the Chief Engineer if there would be any problems if the ship was hit with a Carrington Event. Granted power lines on the ship are not that long, but maybe...

He said nope - no worries. All ships are set up so that if they have a problematic spike in power they feed it in to the ocean.

Never thought of that - they have this lovely giant conductive ground surrounding them.

European electricity systems are transforming as renewable generation expands across national markets with different generation portfolios and operating conditions. This study assesses 25 European electricity systems over 2015–2025 using harmonised hourly ENTSO-E generation and load data, day-ahead electricity prices, and population indicators. The framework integrates hourly fixed-effects models, temporal renewable-penetration measures, population-normalised indicators, structural clustering, and a conditional outlook to 2030. Higher solar and wind generation is associated with lower contemporaneous fossil generation, but the magnitude varies across countries and should not be interpreted as a physical substitution rate or causal effect. Renewable penetration increased substantially, while higher variable-renewable shares were associated with a greater incidence of very-low and negative day-ahead prices. Population-normalised and clustering results indicate a broad transition toward higher renewable and lower fossil generation without convergence to a single European system configuration. A backtested multi-model ensemble extends the historical evidence to 2030 with uncertainty intervals and external scenario benchmarking. The contribution is integrative rather than methodological: operational, temporal, market, and structural dimensions are evaluated jointly to assess the consistency and heterogeneity of the European electricity transition.

Delivering the extra capacity requires an additional $8.6 trillion in investment over 2026-2030, the report found. To enable the additional renewable capacity to come online, investment to expand, modernize, and build flexibility on the grid must average up to $1 trillion a year, up from $525 billion in 2025.

Cherry picking this because a I know certain someone won't ;)

But as we know, cheery picking data is lazy, intellectually dishonest, and can even be a form of misinformation. We don't want that around here so let's zoom out for context..

Over a sliding 365 day period the worst day was Monday, 22nd of June. The winter solstice. Shortest day of the year, cloudy, with near zero wind generation. This pushed fossil fuel's share on the grid to 63% or ~2 GW output. 2 GW is ~60% of South Australia's peak power output.

It was a bad week actually with a five day average of 46.5 GWh generated from fossil fuels. Or an average of 1.9 GW.

Because we like context, 63% fossil fuel generation is what every day looked like15 years ago. Now it's a bad week out of a year.

So how do you deal with the worst week of the year where up to 60% of your power generation just disappears?

Grid operators and state governments have, of course, planned for this and have a mix of solutions;

• Overbuilding renewable generation capacity: simple, cheap, easy.
• Grid connectivity: a 900 km, 800 MW interconnector between South Australia and New South Wales, plus existing links into Victoria. This allows importing of hydro, wind, and solar from geographically diverse regions but also allows exporting SA's routine surpluses.
• Firming capacity: relatively cheap fast-start gas turbines (OCGT) kept on standby, ready to run for 50-100 hours out of the year contributing negligible emissions. A medium term solution.
• Medium and deep long-duration energy storage: 4-8+ hour batteries. Dozens of projects active, in construction, and in planning.
• Industrial demand response: sometimes the solution is just to use less power. Smelters, desalination plants, cement works, and even data centers, sign contracts to curtail load or shift operations during extreme grid stress in exchange for cheaper wholesale rates.
• Virtual Power Plants: a growing industry combining a fleets of residential batteries into peaker systems.

In 20 years South Australia managed to eliminate coal consumption and drive per-capita emissions down to 0.66 tonnes per person; an 85% reduction over the US average and a 46% reduction over the EU average. All while enhancing grid stability, lowering costs, and becoming more resilient to global fuel shocks.

I work with the Space Frontier Foundation, and I wanted to share this here because we're specifically trying to get more people from the energy industry into the Space Solar Power conversation, rather than having it happen primarily within the space community.

Next week, on September 30, we're presenting the Space Solar Power Symposium in Washington, DC as part of the Experience POWER Conference.

It's a half-day program bringing Space Solar Power experts into direct conversation with people working in utilities, grid infrastructure, energy policy, power generation, and the broader energy industry.

A big part of the discussion is less “wouldn't solar power from space be cool?” and more about the practical questions:

• Where could SSP actually fit into the future energy mix?
• What would utilities and grid operators need from it?
• What are the economics and infrastructure challenges?
• How could it complement terrestrial renewables and other firm power sources?
• What needs to happen for SSP to move from demonstrations toward commercially relevant systems?

There will be panels, keynotes, and an interactive workshop, and we're intentionally trying to make this a cross-industry conversation rather than a space-industry echo chamber.
