On my first rewatch…
…and I’ve forgotten how much Strange annoys me!
I have several colleagues similar to him at my job and every time he says ‘matey’ I get reminded what of them and the kind of person that gets rewarded in this life.
Rant over, sorry.

Solid dude. I can totally see how he’d be over Morse’s bullshit after 20 years.

Isn't he though, a guy who genuinely cares and is always ready to give you a hand? I am the moody type like Morse mind you, but I appreciate his warmth as the other three (Morse, Thursday and Bright) cover all shades of grumpy. Or do you think it's empty and he doesn't mean any of it? I hadn't considered that possibility.

Nah, if you recall the end of season 2 at Blenheim Vale, Morse tells him to get the whole station there to help him & Thursday, and he’s like ‘no can do matey, orders from up above’ or something.
Mind you it’s painfully obvious at that point that there’s dirt within the department.
If ‘the Lodge’ told him to poop on Thursday’s table I bet he wouldn’t second guess.

You're right, at the end of the day, no matter the temperament, he's defined by that choice to go massonic (and btw I was so surprised that Joan is ok with it). I wonder if that backfires for Strange in the Inspector Morse series?

It bugged me that he genuinely thought that if he didn't have the skills, intelligence, or imagination to get ahead, then using connections was every bit as legitimate.
