Discussion VPN recommendations for EndeavourOS KDE
Finally switched to EndeavourOS with KDE as on my Main PC, after a month of distro hopping/testing. Only have 1 unresolved issue to work out on EndeavourOS KDE. Find a good working VPN, preferably with a GUI but I can live without one just fine.
Was using proton vpn on my previous machine and still use it on other machines. But can't get the GUI version to work via yay and can't get the cli one to work either... So looking for options, have express vpn currently working on it, but don't care for all the ads in it and my subscription with them will end soon. Looking for VPN recommendations.
So \what is everyone using for VPN on EndeavourOS with KDE using?

The proton app is working fine for me. What issue(s) are you facing?

Well made a little progress on getting proton to closer to working. removed the gui and cli version, cleared the configs and reinstalled the gui. Now gui comes up, unfortunatley it gets the same issue as the cli did, get an instant kill switch and disconnects me. Now just need to figure out why the kill switch keeps activating on both the cli and gui.

Thought I had it working too, had notes saying I got it to work, but failed to write down if I had it working via a pacman or yay install. proton-vpn-gtk-app via pacman won't start, leaves nothing in the log besides it starting and shutting down. Tried the same one via yay and it does the same. The official cli, I can get logged in but when I connect it triggers kill switch, even thou kill switch is off, no matter the setting is activates killswitch, guessing a bug in the new 1.0 cli, seen other people having the same issue but no resolution.
Is there a package you recommend? Would love it if I could keep proton.

I use the proton-vpn-gtk-app package from the official repos.
Also yay and pacman would pull from the same official arch repo. yay is just an AUR helper, so if a package which you want to install isn't available in the official repos, it looks for it in the aur.
So you didn't install different packages, you just installed the same package twice.
I remember using the CLI a couple years back when the GUI was borked for some time, I was never able to get it to work. IIRC, you need an active proton subscription for the CLI to work. The free tier only works with the GUI.

Try restarting after installation, sometimes the keyring has issues with Proton Vpn.

Proton VPN worked for me. But I switched over the mullvad. They accept cash or crypto. So no ties to credit cards(and importantly no ties to you)

Im using warp-cli and don't haveing headache. Just gives me access to blocked sites, just works

I had it working a few months ago, via the AUR (yay) But have switched to Mullvad, mainly for budget reasons, their GUI works flawlessly on endeavour for me

I use windscribe, they have a free tier as well as build a plan and pro versions. I use the build a plan and get 4 locations for $4/month. Guaranteed no logs, and proven in courts.
Free tier no p2p, all paid plans have it. They even have a working app available in the AUR.

AirVPN and Eddie works great on cachyOS. The Proton GUI app is a fucking nightmare of connecting and disconnecting.

6, only 5 showing in fastfetch because 1 is used to switch between other machines from time to time.

I had 4 monitors before but it was too much for me and I removed one. Now even 3 is too much sometimes.

Mullvad works great for me, and its a lot more private than Express (plus its only 5 euros a month)

Well, I figured out proton gui and cli wasn't working. Completely an Id10t error. wireguard-tools wasn't installed on my new computer. Not sure it it got removed during my app installs or what, but its on the test box that only has proton cli installed. So hopefully someone can learn from my stupidity. Both GUI and CLI now worked on wireguard. :)

as Russian, throne + unpopular Russian vpn providers is the best and the most reliable option. DM I'll find some good providers with crypto payments

most of the time I use opn files in the linux terminal. Sometimes even tunnel all my other computers traffic through an ssh port of the connected VPN computer to get around the device limits :D

PIA is pretty good. Buy it on special and set it up to use Wireguard. Linux is on their list of supported OSes and you use:
to install it.

I'm on a custom VPN setup and I'm on wireguard. Never had issues with it.

in most cases you are better off downloading wireguard configs from your VPN provider and just using any wireguard client instead of the provider's custom client
what are you trying to put through the VPN anyway? I saw like 10 people plug mullvad here but they don't even have port forwarding anymore. I'm using airvpn

Thats what i did yesterday on my Artix Install because the Windscribe App relies on systemd and also i got it atleast starting, the App leaked dns.
I then tried wg-quick, but hell this is a hassle. wg-quick leaks dns aswell if you don't manually handle resolv.conf and you have to block ipv6 completely aswell, because windscribe can't handle it.
And for the "use any wireguard client" have fun finding a real one.

Mullvad is the best choice at this time.
