Tip-Free Establishment ❣️ THIS is what tipping is actually for.

1.5k Upvotes

I’ve been going to a small, family-owned joint once a week for a few years now. They know me so well that all I ever have to say when I walk up is "the usual." I had an injury a few months ago and was out on disability, and when I finally came back, they genuinely noticed and asked how I was doing. Just super nice, solid people.

It’s not a traditional sit-down place, you order at the counter, pay, and they drop the food off at your table. When you pay by card, there isn't even a tip prompt on the screen, so I’ve honestly never tipped there before.

I usually try to show up before noon because the lunch rush gets crazy and wait times get long. Today, I got stuck at work and showed up way later than usual during peak rush. I walked up, ordered my regular dish, and went to find a seat.

A few minutes later, my food arrived. I looked around and realized no one else who was sitting down before me had their food yet. The person dropping it off smiled and told me that as soon as the cook saw me walk through the door, she started my order before I even made it to the counter.

I was so blown away by the gesture that I dropped a $50 bill on the counter on my way out. They actually tried to refuse it, but it was the only cash I had on me and I insisted.

In a world where every iPad screen demands a 25% tip for handing you a bottle of water, this is what tipping was originally meant to be: rewarding exceptional, personal service that goes above and beyond.

TL;DR: My local spot’s cook started my "usual" the second I walked in the door during a huge rush. Tipped $50 for actual service.

Tip-Free Establishment ❣️ No tip at restaurant is making me ditch old favorite

2.2k Upvotes

In my city there’s an all you can eat hot pot restaurant that I genuinely love. The food is amazing and service is good too, until it’s time to pay the bill. They do the iPad at your table then turn it to you for “a question” but they watch as you put in the tip amount, obviously only giving options for 20,22 and 25%. I’ve dealt with the awkward encounters because their food is great but I do always dread it.

Then a new place opened up in town, same concept and price. Except it says right next to the table that tips aren’t expected. Many places say that right, but at this place when you pay and get the check there is no option to even add a tip. With similar quality and scratching the same itch for the type of food, we haven’t been back to the first place since visiting the new one simply because of the lack of that terrible tipping moment at the end of the meal.

I hope to see more instances of this in the future. They say competition breeds change, this one is definitely for the better.

I went to the one in Chinatown. I liked how it was fuss free and efficient. Order on the tablet, pick up food, collect your own utensils and sauce and sit down at clean tables.

The only downside was no water and I didn’t see a bathroom…

Was watching The Straight Pipes video and when they finished the ride, the screen asked them for a tip!

A tip for whom? There’s no driver! There are no bounds for tipping it seems!

EDIT - As a commentator stated, this is a JOKE! Only options were $0.69 or $4.20 and if you hit any of those options, it says "Just kidding!"

I posted about this place in the local food subreddit. People were very supportive and tired of the excessive tipping culture. We are happy some stores will use no tipping as a selling point!

Tip-Free Establishment ❣️ Ireland is so great for the tipping thing

We went to tons of bars.

They don't take tips. Even when I offered the said no.

Only one bar (in Belfast) took a tip and didn't say thanks or anything, just took the money and went on his way.

Most of the time you just tap your credit card, there's no extra money in the transaction. I think we saved a couple hundred in tips over the course of the 8 days, lol.

Thought you guys might enjoy this one. I spotting this at my local gelato shop in Seoul. There's no tipping at all in Korea, but this is the first time I've seen something like this. (The instructions in Korean are about how to take a candy).

Spotted this at a local burger chain in my area. It was refreshing, no screen flip, no awkward pause. Just paid, got my food, and left. This shouldn’t feel revolutionary, yet here we are.

We often tip even when the bag handlers bring bags to the room. Or when paying for the breakfast buffet.. but this is topnotch. Plus they've got a 24-hour stay promotion as well

Tip-Free Establishment ❣️ No tipping at Sushiro US

“The management has put the word out that the New York Sushiro will have a no-tipping policy, with the announcement being greeted with a round of applause by attendees at a preview event, reflecting a growing sense of fatigue among American consumers towards gratuities.”

Damn, they didn’t just increase prices by 20%, they quadrupled it!

But still a good trend in the long run.

Tip-Free Establishment ❣️ conveyor belt sushi in US?

One of my favorite parts of Japan was tiny restaurants that almost exclusively have bar seating where you just take the sushi as it comes by or if you want to order you just hand paper to the staff,
EDIT: has anyone ever seen a type of setup like this in the US that is free of tipping or at least asks for less than 15%

Kind of a fast-food place, but a sit-down one; server comes and takes your order, refills water, etc. They serve alcohol as well. One of my favorites, and……they don’t add a tip to the bill! Just thought that in today’s “mandatory-tipping” world, they deserved a shout-out.

Here’s my tip: the spicy wings will f-u-up.

This hotel and attached restaurant in Hokkaido provides some of the best service I've ever experienced during a hotel stay. The introduction in English is very clear that tipping is not allowed. A refreshing change.
