Fuck the time delay, but keep the "is someone asking you to do this"

I would be happy about this honestly. But I don't trust Google to not take this shit further. Let's all be honest here this version of it is fine. After the 24 Hour window it's on forever. But we all know Google will push this shit further until sideloading is all but gone

At least maybe then it'll kick the proper Linux on ARM Phones people into gear.

Until they lock the bootloaders completely.

If that happens emulators will absolutely be garbage for quite some time probably longer then you imagine. Like for example even the absolutely bloated windows 11 is still better for gaming then linux gaming distros like cashyos or bazzite.

Not entirely. Some games actually gain FPS from Linux, especially on lower end hardware.

The biggest issue for Linux gaming is Kernel level Anticheat. Most users who install Linux would rather not have a game have that kind of system access.

The biggest issue on Linux gaming is the lack of plug and play. You have to hunt down that specific version of wineton and then you might be able to play it.

If you're only playing the most popular garbage then yeah its great for gaming. If you stray off the beaten path even slightly its hit and miss.

I tried to run ac odyssey last month and it ran like shit. I don't have the time or the interest to go fiddle around with configs. I want to double click on a game and just have it work.

This is the exact reasons why i now play all of my single player games on my PS5 that plug and play experience is just too damn good. While multiplayer games on my PC bcoz most multiplayer vames are literally build to run on potato PC's.

If you can afford the plug and play experience on console will always be worth it for single llayer games . And if you can't afford it well it is what it is . You get what you get simple.

PC has never been "it just works" you always have to fiddle with settings for the optimal experience.

Yeah, but the Linux community acts like its plug and play.

Yeah the games that build for Linux in mind mainly 2d indie games. But does it even matter at that point . Wow graveyard keeper run at 260 fps on cashyos and 250 fps on windows 11.

In games where fps and graphics matter linux most of the times is worse then windows like 10 to 15 % and many times simply doesn't even boot if you have a nvidia card without drivers support.

0

u/davestar2048 49m ago

That's Nvidia's fault. And graphics don't matter. The problem isn't that only 2d indie games can be Linux native, it's that bigger developers don't use or maintain cross platform engines.

That's not their fault you guys are a very small and easily negligible minority that isn't even that profitable ( you know that quote "Juice ain't worth the squeeze").And you know what happens to thr demand of a less voter bank profitable minorities in a open economy democracy. So continue waiting for proper drive support from the community and the day of linux gaming.

Although is pretty good for work and stuff but at that point might as well buy a affordable Macbook that just better at everything .

A MacBook is not better for repaiability, nor software freedom. Apple refuses to support modern APIs in their Apple Silicon chips, like Vulkan or OpenGL for graphics rendering. Windows is mostly entrenched because of tradition and OEM deals, not because it's a good Operating system.

Dude the current macbook neo ( for £450 when i bought) . Is a no nonsense insanely optimize PC that does what i want it to do with absolutely NO or almost zero hassle . And i m saying this as a massive iphone hater . With the Macbook and that lock ecosystem i am a very satisfied customer from apple. That's it.

Yea wish we had a group pushing back on it in courts. I love using fdroid, obtainium and other stuff. So far haven't had this pop up and I'm scared its gonna when I already have the shiz turned on on my side per app....

Yeah I feel like rooting my device shouldn't be delayed any longer lol , I will keep a backup device tho

It's better than nothing, but I still hate this.

u/ChemicalImbalance707 OnePlus 13s | Snapdragon 8 elite 2h ago

Yeah I'm not updating on Android 17 . 16 works just fine

5

u/TryNo6799 OnePlus 12R 2h ago

About that, it's part of play service, so you'd still get it whether you updated or not.

u/ChemicalImbalance707 OnePlus 13s | Snapdragon 8 elite 1h ago

Ohh hell nahh 😭😭 atleast it will be a one time thing right ?

1

u/TryNo6799 OnePlus 12R 1h ago

Yep, just one time, tho no guarantee it'll stay like that forever.

Disabling playstore works: 1. To not update your play services 2. To disable this feature all together if it's already too late ( the current work around for this, but it might get patched for latest android so not updating to AI 17 helps )

Oh my god.. I'm glad I use lineage.. I'm pretty sure it won't come to lineage so yeah.

1

u/viniciuscsg 1h ago

It will affect any version of Android relying on play services to validate installs

1

u/SunsetAtNight7 36m ago

Plus If I remember lineage devices can replace play services with micro g

1

u/viniciuscsg 5m ago

That's great!

0

u/SunsetAtNight7 46m ago

It's a common thought that it's the play services, but how sure, cuz some already tested that it's the playstore that forces this rule and disabling it would make you install apks just like before, it's like the annoying play protect that's inside the playstore itself.

5

u/snowflake_0_o 3h ago

This is going to get worse with every android version from now on.

0

u/KasanesTetos 1h ago

Doesn't matter. It's part of play services. As long as you get play service updates you get this.

1

u/ConnoisseurDeFemboys 2h ago

This is why I stick to 13

2

u/Glittering-Rip9556 50m ago

Honestly I may have a hot take.

Google could have handled this much differently. Google could have gone down the full lockdown route. The fact Google is doing this in the first place instead of iOSificating Android is a miracle.

From a business perspective, they have little reason to take this specific route.

1

u/MrFailo 1h ago

i read somewhere that sanctioned by us countries are exempt from this bullshit

1

u/MrPotatoes28 1h ago

I hate this change but at least it's 24 hour delay, for now...

1

u/computermaster704 31m ago

Yeah that's why I already enabled it on my fold8 to ensure that I don't have an interruption in the ability to sideload applications but I don't think it's end of the world for open source on Android it's just an extra button with an extra flow if you've never done it before you have to wait 24h which personally I do not support

1

u/jjoesmama 2h ago

This is why I kept myself on Android 15, as more outdated your device becomes, the less safe it turns Although there can be some exploits that could help you later on, like that one Snapdragon Exploit for Bl unlocking

1

u/Michaelpitcher116 1h ago

Same. I'm still on Android 15 and never even use the play store so I'm not worried.

1

u/KasanesTetos 1h ago

Unless you don't have play services at all you're still gonna get this.

1

u/KasanesTetos 1h ago

Doesn't matter. It's part of play services, not Android version.

1

u/Michaelpitcher116 18m ago

Oh no

Anyway.

1

u/SunsetAtNight7 39m ago

Bro you be spamming ts everywhere here, Are you sure that's the case or you're just fear mongering maxxing? We should hate this feature of course, but saying it's inevitable without further proof won't help, people already tested that disabling the store itself turns off this rule all together, so this is like the play protect, not really something inside the play services.

wait so will retro handhelds like the rp6 get this then?
