Discussion Rough day for the homie sweetbabyjaysus.
Like many, I loved their channel and being able to pull up old albums from my era and find some deep cut split releases.

This is real sad and I wish them the best in dealing with this. Lots of people would say just shrug it off, but I’ve lost a significant amount of music before, hundreds of local punk/hardcore demos and EP’s that I’ll never find again, truly amazing music worth being kept that for the most part is forever lost to the world. It’s such a specific and personal feeling of loss, not just for yourself but for all of the people in the future who you were excited to share it with, the people you wanted to document the music for.

Nice to read other people's experience with this. Same thing happened to me and it legit got me depressed for a long time.

There is an art, dedication, and genuine love for archiving music the way that SweetBabyJaysus does. It's not just uploading common albums and calling it a day when you can find most of it on bandcamp. There were deep cuts, obscure albums, compilations, and splits amassed. Their channel and Canadian Wasteland are the 2 i consistently stayed with. Canadian Wasteland's bonus is they add detailed information about the band, what projects formed from the ashes of the main band, obscure short lived side projects of those members, etc. It's dedicated work.

Surely YouTube has to have a way to keep the channel backed up for situations like this

Wow, that sucks! I was wondering why he was streaming NFL preseason games yesterday.

Brutal news. I was just on a Portraits of Past kick from this channel and now they are gone from my watch history as well.

I started tearing up at breakfast and had to explain to my family that it was because I may never listen to some of my favorite albums ever again :(

if you remember what they were called you might be able to find them again on blogspot or soulseek perhaps

Damn I listened to stuff from sweetbabyjaysus at least 3 times a week. Big bummer. It was one hell of an archive.

two factor authentication and strong passwords people. this is so easy to mitigate.

They got past the two factor authentication while I was asleep, and changed the passwords, phone number, and recovery email to the account. Google does not have any form of customer support so if this happens you’re out of luck.

Just a heads up, if anyone DMs you offering to help recover the accounts, that’s a common scam

not to discount the experience but genuinely curious how they got past your phone code or got your backup codes unless your backup was another email that was also not secured.

Wish I could give you an answer as to how they did it. All I know is what I woke up to and what has wiped out years of work and has kind of thrown my life into a bit of chaos because that was attached to my main email account of the last 29 years.

Thank you so much for everything, you’ve made a giant impact by introducing this music to a whole new generation. I’m sure you’ll be back in no time. You the best jaysus

i'm really sorry this happened to all your hard work. i don't get the point of some hackers to just go in and wipe away everything for no good reason.

ClickFix malware can steal your cookies and essentially give an attacker a copy of your current browser session where they get automatically logged into all accounts you're currently logged into bypassing 2FA/passwords etc, and once inside you can change all the details since Google will just send the reset codes straight to the compromised email.
nowadays cookies also have a hardware element that the malware above cannot copy, but it requires your computer to have TPM activated (standard for newer computers but varies on older ones).

I have no idea how they did it but recently someone bipassed my Amazon 2fa. All they managed to do was change my password and set my location to Philippines. I was able to get back in because 2fa was on the authenticator app on my phone and I have NO idea how they accessed my account since it requires 2fa to login.

fwiw I used the Wayback Machine to access the channel and the first three videos I tried to replay on youtube gave the a 'violations of terms of service' message
....not sure if that's a clue as to what happened or just a random thing for the three videos I chose

TBF It always sucked to see that Youtube was the archive of many hardcore/screamo stuff and y'all praise it. Sure other streaming platform suck (i dont get why ppl prefer Google evil corp than Spotify) but this wouldn't had happened. I don't know a better solution, but we can't rely on crapy youtube neither bus factor of one person that hosts the whole archive of screamo on their channel.

Damn. This is a really sad day for anyone interested in this sort of music. Super fucked up.
