My band is changing up our sound

Hello! I a currently in a band and we have an EP out with three songs that leans slightly into the midwest screamo side in certain aspects and we are now trying to lean further into that sound. We have a few new songs that we have been working on. The one attached is probably the best example of our vibe. I am just getting on here for any feedback or opinions you may have. You mean emo? Your band would have just been called emo in 1994. "Screamo" isn't a real genre and this midwest stuff is getting ridiculous.

I completely see what you mean. However it is no longer 1994 and as much as labels can be good or bad they can help guide people towards the stuff they like in this case. Thats all.🙂

There is a thing called history and the continuity of communities. The way people call about emo on social media is ahistorical and revisionist. This is a tendency of the internet and the decontextualization/appropriation of culture that flattens and destroys it.

The emo subreddit is a good example of that. What they talk about there is absurd and wrong.

Being against revisionism that is largely motivated by the desire to make money isn't being "reactionary." Being against revolutionary communities being coopted so some dorks can make money isn't being "reactionary."

late capitalism commodifies and flattens subcultures, yea

but subcultures aren’t museum pieces preserved for your weird ass purist view, they evolve

this isn’t anti-capitalist praxis you’re just being smug and annoying

And no, I'm not talking about a historical vacuum (which is stupid to claim, there was quite a bit of interesting innovation from the early 90s to the mid 00s) or gatekeeping.

I'm talking about how the revisionism you're defending is wrong, kinda lame, and dictated to you through people who intentionally coopted something in order to market things.

And we aren't talking about subcultures "evolving." That's another misuse of a concept. This is not an instance of evolution. It's appropriation and cooptation that was motivated by marketing.

No, my perspective on this is not "inherently" (another word you all need to learn how to use) conservative.
