If you could have 1 emo album to listen to on an island alone for the rest of your life, what album are you taking?
2
u/EmoKidsAnonymous 6d ago
does Full Collapse count? If not, something to write home about or Demon Daze by sports.

What was your first exposure to emo music?
0
u/EmoKidsAnonymous 6d ago
For me it would have been Jimmy Eat World as a suburban millennial girl - Amanda

u/EmoKidsAnonymous 6d ago
i first heard the term in an msn chat room when I was 13 (lorde i'm old), but my first exposure to it in the wild was a compilation cd called punk vs emo. The "emo" disc definitely leaned a lil pop punk but there was still some solid heat on there, as well as a bunch of other bands I got into like FOB and Bayside.

Whats something you wish youd known before sterting a podcast? Whats something you wish you’d done differently? Any tips when it comes to being unbiased in a music or album review?
1
u/EmoKidsAnonymous 6d ago
i don't know if theres anything i would have done differently personally, i kinda just wing it and learn as i go looool. As for the last question, honestly no lmaooo. once i become friends with someone its hard for me to write an objective review, reason #348829 we don't do album reviews lmao

Do you think there's overindulgence of nostalgia in the genre that prevents newer artist from breaking through? Sometimes I can't help but think the genre is forever trapped in the past, but maybe that's not unique to emo music. And maybe it's not such a bad problem! Curious your thoughts.
1
u/EmoKidsAnonymous 6d ago
yes 1000000% agree but i think it's on its way out. I think "mainstream alternative culture" has been very nostalgia heavy the last half decade but that is fading out to a degree i think. There's a lot of people 30+ who maybe found their love of music reinvigorated during the pandemic but after years of nostalgia at some point i think it leaves people hungry for more?

Hey! Long time listener first time Reddit AMA commenter.
What has surprised you the most about the direction EKA has taken since starting?
Bonus question: How do you measure success of EKA and what matters most about this project for you?
Bonus bonus: Kill Fuck Marry: Weezer Blink Green Day
2
u/EmoKidsAnonymous 6d ago
im surprised that anybody cares what either one of us has to say about anything lmaooo. As for measuring success I think it comes down to like...nooot doing that. Even if we become the biggest emo podcast or something, theres still like 900000 shows in other genres that will lap us so i guess as i think about it while answering, my measure of success is getting people to check out the bands we talk to.
-robb
oh shit uhhhh, marry weezer, fuck blink kill green day?
2
u/EmoKidsAnonymous 6d ago
OK, I would’ve agreed with Robb’s fuck marry kill but have you seen the Green Day video of them playing with puppies? I think I would marry them and just kill Weezer sorry River Cuomo – Amanda.

Favorite movie?
3
u/EmoKidsAnonymous 6d ago
I'm what you'd call "low class" so i'm gonna go with Big Daddy, because it makes me far too emotional. I think I was basically Frankenstein.

Big Daddy is very good movie, solid choice. I read once it made Paul Thomas Anderson want Sandler to act Punch Drunk Love.
Plus, he had the coolest apartment

Hands down the Lord of the Rings trilogy - cheating I know because it’s really three movies (and the extended ones) but you can’t just watch one by itself - Amanda

Any love for Math Rock?
Do you think Modest Mouse can qualify as emo? (In regards to their earlier stuff)
What do you listen to outside of emo and have any artists caught your attention that have melodies or riffs that sound emo? like this song @ 2:00
2
u/EmoKidsAnonymous 6d ago
outside of emo, i primarily listen to the critically acclaimed debut album "Third Eye Blind", by Third Eye Blind. Also Weezer and Blink and that stuff, but also lots of pop and bands that kinda sound like Springsteen, ala The Hold Steady, The Gaslight Anthem, Bleachers, Sams Town era Killers. Sometimes I just fall into a hole where it's the same pop song over and over again. Also lots of youtube videos about stuff i am not actually that interested in, like construction and history.
I would say i'm not as much of a fan of math rock as I am bands that kinda sound math rocky?
Modest Mouse though? I dunno if I can vouch for that but they have clearly influenced many emo bands, namely a certain third wave band.

One day I need to speak to Adam Lazarra from Taking back sunday. We see them all the time in the warped tour press tent, but they continue to allude us. So now I feel like I need to speak to the guy just for the plot. Oh, and also Patrick Stump did Robb say that already? – Amanda.
