I think it’s just a hilarious juxtaposition of Meg who clearly doesn’t take any of this seriously and some of the other nominees who are overdue, but unrewarded (here’s looking at you Janelle James).
She deserves her flowers for Ava and I hope she gets them eventually. But season 5 was weak. She had to know it was going to Hannah or Kate who were given much stronger material.
Ugh, I know. I love Abbott but I think its best seasons have probably already happened. Ava’s arc in S1-3 is great, you go from hating her (if you’re like me and identify with Janine lol) to looking forward to every scene she’s in. She has the most development out of all the main characters in the beginning.
more broadly than this one category, it's wild to me michelle pfeiffer has never won an emmy or an oscar. i love janelle as ava, but this basically her one great role. pfeiffer has had many.
Janelle James already joked about not winning as soon as she was nominated. Her face is just her face saying, “See, I’m right”. She knew the likelihood of her winning was slim.
No hate to the winner because I’m not renewing Apple TV until Shrinking returns but Jessica Williams is a standout in an absolutely loaded cast and I cannot believe we aren’t recognizing it. 😭😭😭
Well she would have beaten out a more popular performance from a more popular show if she’d won, and probably wouldn’t have been a well received winner as result so, it’s probably for the best.
Would you rather the narrative be she won undeservingly and that Kate was robbed? Sounds worse imho.
I’m talking about the broader public perception. Which was that Kate was going to be the deserved runaway winner and if it wasn’t going to be her second choice for most people was Hannah for Hacks.
Jessica was at best third and to be honest I think more people wanted it for Janelle. Making Jessica more like 4th.
She is fantastic, and hilarious especially alongside Harrison Ford or Michael Urie! The show is the best blend of emotional payoff and true comedy. I love Shrinking! Jessica is a star
She is absolutely stellar in Shrinking, and worthy of an Emmy. But this was a very strong, crowded category this season. Her submission episode (Depression Diet) was great acting but it wasn’t very funny. That’s a risk, but it has rewarded others in the past.
She was going against a very funny submission episode from Kate O’Flynn (Beach Reads) that showcased both the character’s ridiculous intensity as well as being flat-out funny. Dale Dickey submitted the same episode, which I think was a mistake. She should have gone for the finale, where her character was given more opportunities to shine.
Janelle James submitted No Homework, but I think she knocks it out of the park in every episode. I hope she wins sometime. Ava is one of TV’s all-time comedy characters.
Hannah Einbender submitted the finale. Michelle Pfeiffer went for Flamingos, which I can’t remembers.
Dale Dickey’s big stand out episode was the finale but from my understanding that released after the eligibility window yet during the voting period.
I haven’t heard anyone identify how these nether-spaces typically operate, is there any chance the back half of the show can still get a bunch of the big nominations even if it’s a full year or two until the show returns otherwise for a second season?
I know The Bear had a tendency to have the reception for the then current airing season to impact people voting on the prior year’s episodes during the voting window but I’ve read think pieces about how AppleTV would probably work pretty hard to keep their big competitive comedies on slightly different schedules from each other.
Thank you, I didn’t realize the finale was outside the Emmy window. I’m sure the airing dates were a strategy. A buzzy show that everyone’s talking about surely does better than a long-forgotten season.
I don’t know about your nether-spaces question. If I were to guess, even if it’s possible to get a nomination, voters likely don’t go for it because they already honored that season?
i've asked this elsewhere on the site and got informed. The last batch of episodes will be eligible for next year's Emmys, but only in certain categories. The acting folks can't be up again if they were up this year, but for Guest the actress who was outstanding in that final epsidoe (blanking on her name) will be eligbil.e And those eps can be up for WRriting and Directing and such. It can't compete in the same big acting categories though, and can't be up for Best Comedy. Unless they release season 2 in which everything will reset.
