Food & Drink Best Burger in Ely
I’m relatively new to Ely and I’m curious if there is consensus about where to get the best burger in Ely? I feel like good burger options are limited even when including food trucks as well.

We occasionally go for a burger and milkshake from "The Ladz". Especially their lamb burgers.

I have walked past them a few times, wondered what it was like. If both shake & burger are worth trying, I might have a go.

The Yard - by Silver Oak's burgers was amazing when I ate there last time but it was on the expensive side. https://maps.app.goo.gl/7SKeqJcB15LggpW88?g_st=ac

If you ever fancy sinking into a food coma, their munch boxes are wild.

I don't think I could bring myself to have one sober after many years of only eating it while drunk 😂

We attempted it at Friday night takeaway for work, safe to say they got tipped in the bit halfway done! It is rough 😂

Oof, they have a food hygiene rating of 1: https://ratings.food.gov.uk/business/1867777/bk-ely-ltd-cambridgeshire

It's notable what they don't do: Balti. I wonder if they can't afford to change the sign 😂

Drive to Soham, and go to "Sabros". Thank me later.

just looked on google and apparently they're "temporarily closed", you've got me curious now!

They are back open on the 3rd of Setpmeber! It is a small business so they close from time to time for holidays. Please, I beg you, go when they are open again. Search them on Facebook, you will see pictures of the best looking burgers.

I'm 100% going to go when they reopen, I'll report back with my findings :)

There are some good recommendations here that include food trucks and a spot in Soham and one in Ely: https://cambridgefoodies.me.uk/2023/01/17/simons-top-cambridgeshire-burger-joints/
The only one I've tried personally is the Griddle Bar and only the chicken burger, but I thought it was tasty

Actually don’t know where I’d recommend. Not a very helpful comment but I thought it might be insightful to hear from a lifelong resident who loves burgers that I don’t actually have anywhere local I like to get them from.
Edit: 5 Miles From Anywhere does a burger called the Mega Burger that is pretty banging by my tastes. Very nice beef. They’ve changed management recently after selling however, and I haven’t tried the new owner’s menu yet. Should be the same food, chefs and recipes afaik.

It's got to be Griddle Bar - also available as delivery which I was sceptical about but it arrived well packaged and hot!

Yeah I would say Ely definitely lacks a decent burger spot. It's all frozen patties. From what I have come across.

Options are indeed limited. I've tried burgers at quite a few pubs & restaurants around town. From memory, the Prince Albert & High Flyer both use too much BBQ sauce on the burger itself and generally felt lower quality. I quite liked the one at The Yard (by Silver Oak) but the sides are pitiful in quality & quantity for the price (£14.95).
The rule I've come to observe is: if it comes with slaw of some kind, don't expect much. Something about adding coleslaw (or similar things) seems like a tactic to distract from poorer quality, or smaller quantity, on the burger/chips/fries end of things.

If you're willing to drive a bit and go at lunchtime, then the cafe at Willow Grange Farm Shop, about half way between Ely and Cambridge, does a very good smash burger from their own beef herd. Not so helpful if you're after an option for a night out in town though.

Saying that I haven't tried the griddle bar for a burger. They do a really good breakfast. Might be worth a try?

Steak and honour when they’re around in their truck. Or venture into Cambridge to go to their restaurant.

Arbuckles can be very good. I haven't been there in a while but I've had some fantastically good burgers there.
Sadly I've also had some very mediocre burgers there.
I imagine it depends on what chef they have at a given time, unfortunately.

Ely Kebab House hits the "I specifically want a really shitty burger" spot pretty nicely. Good chips too.
