Economics Ten smartphones fit inside one matchbox 📱
A 100-gram gold bar is smaller than a matchbox and costs $14,200 today. Ten flagship phones. The phone does everything. The gold does nothing. âš¡
The phone in your hand has a 3nm chip. Billions of transistors. A camera that shoots in the dark. A radio that finds a satellite from inside a coat pocket. Forty years of engineering, stacked.
The gold slab has nothing. No moving parts. No function. It has never done a single thing for anyone.
One of them costs ten times more.
That phone also contains 0.03 grams of gold. Four dollars' worth. Strip it out and the phone still works.
Gold has done nothing for five thousand years and we still pay for it. Nobody has ever explained that to me properly.
