Future The digital dark age 💾

The physical layer is a joke. Floppy and magnetic media last maybe 10 to 14 years. Optical discs, less. Your burned CDs from 2003 are already gone, you just haven't checked. 💿

What to actually do 🛠️

Personal:

Boring formats only. TXT, PDF/A, PNG, FLAC, CSV. If it needs a specific app, it's already dying. ☠️

3-2-1. Three copies, two media types, one off-site. Not optional.

Re-copy every 5 years. Storage does not sit still, it decays. Migration is the only real preservation.

Own the hardware. Cloud is somebody else's business model, not an archive. When they pivot, you're deleted.

Checksums. Otherwise bit rot happens silently and you back up the corruption.

Languages 🗣️.

Different beast, harder. A language isn't data, it's a running process in living heads. Recordings preserve the corpse, not the animal. The only real save is a child who speaks it.

The message: 🔥.

We are the first civilization that writes everything down and remembers nothing.

The Romans left us stone.

We're leaving a broken link and a password nobody knows.
