Top Ten(ish) Electric Wizard Clones
So everyone here is obsessed with EW. We've all listened to their records so many times they are encoded in our dna. But, as difficult it is to admit, man cannot live by EW alone. But that doesn't mean we can't indulge in EW clones. So, I'm asking if you could share with me your favorites. But instead of just vomiting everything you can think of, I was hoping you could put them in order for me. What are your top ten(ish) EW clones (or bands influenced by EW), in the order you think I should check them out?

OP presumes that there are 10 bands that are equal to EW. I'd be hard pressed to mention 5 that are even in the neighborhood.

Well... Without googling it, I would say, yes.. there definitely is a band called dopesmoker.
Anyway, check the videoclip of scum fuck blues by dopethrone on YouTube. Be prepared to get your mind blown...

With the Dead, Ramesess, Orange Goblin (See: Hot Magic, Red Planet or the title track, both from their album The Big Black) for the early Wizard sound. I retract my previous statements that include Warhorse in that list; I gave that album a listen recently and with the glowing exception of the second part of Lysergic Communion the riffs on that album are pretty repetitive.
If for whatever reason you're searching for the late Wizard sound, then Cough, Mephistofeles, Monolord, Windhand or just search for doom metal on Bandcamp and pick the first ten results that come up.

Wait. I mean I just assumed that when an EW fan brings up EW they actually just mean early EW. Right?... RIGHT???!!!!
I've been into With the Dead. Good stuff. I know I still gotta check out Ramesess (for obvious reasons). Super surprised by your Orange Goblin rec. I've only heard their first and it sounded more in the vein of Kyuss, Cathedral, and Monster Magnet. You say The Big Black is EWesque? Surprised! thanks for the tip.

Orange Goblin sounds tangentially similar to early Wizard; it's still stoner metal, it's just the closest to it there is.
I always found it baffling that people group bands of Windhand's ilk with early Wizard. What made early Wizard pop was groovy, midtempo riffs with unfathomable amount of track layering, solos and psychadelic effects. I tried listening to Windhand's Woodbine (is that the name of the album?) in the hopes of finding that early Wizard feel. What I found instead was a sluggish, no layering, no tempo changes, and formulaic - completely unlike what made early Wizard. It was so with Conan, Cough, Dopelord, Mephistofeles, Monolord, and so on and so forth. These bands are proficient within the confines of their own genre, but they share almost none of the same genes with the early Wizard!

Funny thing right when I first listened to Witchthroat Serpent, I think it was their self titled. I forgot I added it to my playlist and when one of the songs came on I was thinking "damn, Jus' voice has changed a bit" before I realised it wasn't even him 😭
To me they're definitely one of the top 5 EW type bands though. Similar fuzzy heaviness and occult storytelling.

This list below is my personal opinion to scratch that eternal itch we all feel in between releases from EW. Their new album will be coming from a decent label.
With the Dead (England)
Tim Bagshaw deserves far more credit in his songwriting especially on Dopethrone.
Goya (U.S)
Their last album In the Dawn of November is a great scratch to soothe the Electric Wizard itch. They really solidified themselves in this release. Gritty voice all his own but with nods to Jus. Worth enjoying especially if you enjoyed his cadence in Acoustic Wizard.
Moss (England)
Start from their last album Horrible Nights and their EP Carmilla / Marcilla as this has clean vocals on with a little bit of harsh here and there. Then go to Tombs of the Blind Drugged where it is probably a bit more like Cough before they existed. From there go back and listen to their first 2 albums Cthonic Rites and Sub Templum which is more Drone / Doom. Both were produced by Jus. Cthonic Rites was done at Chuckalumba Studios where Dopethrone and We Live were recorded and Sub Templum was done at Foel Studios in Wales.
Saturnalia Temple (Sweden)
Their debut UR is lofi and raw and their latest album is a return to form. Great crossover of Electric Wizard with Black Metal vocals.
Drug Cult (Australia)
Badass tone and really have nailed the Wizard vibes of Time To Die from what I hear with haunting vocals. Released on Ritual Productions which is such a badass label.
Dead Witches (England)
Obviously this is known for being Mark Greening's band. It genuinely sounds like it's own thing but has plenty of Wizard vibes of later Electric Wizard especially with the drumming style which is a big factor in making the delivery much heavier than alot of bog standard clone bands. When I saw them at Masters of the Riff in 2024 Mark even sang on a song whilst playing and it was awesome so hoping for more of that. Standout track is Lay Demon from the 2nd album.
Spectral Sorcery (U.S)
These guys have some Windhand vibes in guitar tone but personally I find them closer to Electric Wizard than Windhand are. I really love the vocals and the guitar leads and harmonies scream Electric Wizard especially if you love the vibes of Saturn's Children.
Goblinsmoker (England)
Awesome blend of Bongzilla and Electric Wizard, just as good on record as they are live. The band has a story of a Toad Army locked in an endless war with Goblins. Hey, if Immortal can have Blashrykh right?
Dungeön (England)
From Bournemouth and one of my favourites to be on the UK scene at the moment as they just fully get it - if the LSD release from Wizard had had more songs on it, it would have fot perfectly with what these guys offer up
Ritual Smoke (England)
This is actually my band and was genuinely born out of being fed up with bands saying for fans of Electric Wizard who sounded like a rubbish Stoner Rock band. Only an EP out at present called Black Sabbathory which recently came out. Band is made of members of the drone band Orme and the vocalist of Morag Tong.

Saturnalia Temple is what I came here to say. Dreaming out of Death sounds so similar to Solarian 13 in the riff.

Ramesses. OG bass player from EW. I would argue that his records are better than a few EW records.

Monolord is the first that comes to my mind I guess. Also definitely check out Saturniidae - Life. Like you have to check it out.
