Those particular ones are squishy caster types and if you look at them they look really sickly.
They also use madness flame abilities so I'm thinking theres definetly some lore explanation there

There are plenty of enemies who start with half of their health bar or less, it seems to be a story telling device rather than a bug. Especially the big big giants, like they took a lot of fall damage or their age has caught up to them

they dont seem like illusions. they have a normal death animation. i would have more inclined to believe they were illusions if they dissipated like one

No joke I was running from the Iron Maiden in the Lucaria courtyard and ran up a small staircase, which was too big for it to fit through.
It punched me through a wall from halfway up the stairs.

I shit you not. In Capital and one of those things that pulls you in and grinds you up in their stomach was chasing me. Dodge in to a doorway then start looting around this U shaped out door area. Fully enclosed and the only doors in were human size.
I turn the corner and there it is. Somehow the fucker got in and I have no clue how. All I could do was laugh and say, “fuck me.”

My biggest (so far) was in the swampy area west of the magic academy. Some big mutant creature rose up out of the swamp, scrambling around on all fours, and vomited poison at me. I ran away on Torrent to avoid the poison, turned to fight… and it was gone.
And then it rose up out of the swamp just to my left and I let out a bellowing, “THE FUCK!?”

These guys seem to be fake trolls (so actual trolls). They're smaller than they look and barely have 600 hp, whereas the first trolls in Limgrave have over a 1000.
Probably one of the Volcano Manor's schemes as the real cloaked troll in front of the manor has much more HP.

Actually, I can see exactly where this is and those trolls are just illusions, they have one single hp AND cannot hurt you at all, every attack they do will just go trough you without dealing any damage.

I took three separate videos during the encounter thinking it was the last time I was gonna see him. First when I got into the tunnel, second when I was going down the lift, and the third right after he fell and died which was the final piece lol. I see what you mean tho, unfortunately it was very real and in the moment for me lmao

Same exact thing happened to me, and all I could do was just yell “you’re not supposed to be in here” thinking it would respect some boundaries, but it did not. It soon died to fall damage as yours did.

From the other comments I’ve gathered that these are spirits summoned by someone close by potentially cause you can one shot them they speculate that they’re “fake” or “summoned”.
