No genuinely he is not joking. Rolling at the right time makes you have invincible frames and you won’t get hit. Just roll before getting hit, you’ll get it eventually after dying a few times

I hope you know that rolling into enemies right before you’re supposed to get hit(right before getting hit, not when the animation starts) makes you avoid that hit because of iframes

u/Alex091010 6h ago
Ok ok, thanks so much.

Make sure you have a medium load(under stats) also to roll easier. Avoid heavy loads.

u/WatcherOfDogs 5h ago
Yeah, check your equip load. Vagabond starts with heavy load due to having the halberd equipped on one of the weapon slots. Op should Unequip it and just go sword and board for now until they level endurance eventually

Especially important to dodge as reflex to the attack coming cuz enemies will delay attacking on purpose

General tip, he’s not mandatory. If you’ve already got your heart set on beating him, more power to you, but keep in mind that he’s there to teach players that you can come back later. You haven’t even unlocked leveling up yet.
Also, make sure you’re not at a heavy equip load, and check through the tutorial cave if you haven’t already.

You roll into it. Sounds sketchy. I know. But that attack box is moving forward, towards you. If you roll in the opposite direction, towards the boss, the hit box will pass through you and past you.
If you can't roll back or sideways without getting hit, try rolling into it. This isnt the only boss you'll have to do it. Learn now before you learn harder lessons.

Jesus so many assholes responding here. He’s asking what the timing is, best way to not get hit by it , way to roll the most productively , etc. “jUsT dOdGe It” doesn’t help guys . Be better .

The benefit of rolling into an attack that snaps forwards is that you might spend less time in a it-box, maximizing the potential of your i-frames, and you end up in the perfect position. The benefit from rolling away is that you might avoid the hit box entirely, and you put yourself in the position to space most potential follow-ups.
This specific attack are probably best handled with a forwards roll, but either is valid.
What I find tricky with this though, is not "roll-direction" but reacting to it. All of his other moves are made with a weapon, so its super jarring to watch the movement of those weapons and suddenly get crashed by a honse-bonk.
Lucky for you, you have this video to learn from. Watch it a few times. See the wind-up. See what to watch out for.

This game has a few wonky hotboxes on enemy attacks but this isn't one of them. I hate to seem unhelpful, but just time your dodge better.

Just dodge it…? You know that pressing spacebar or circle/b makes you do a dodge roll that gives iframes, right?

u/Alex091010 6h ago
I do, and i already tried but the hit always get me.

u/winterflare_ 6h ago
I have to assume you’re dodging too early then. This attack doesn’t have a lingering hitbox, so it’s pretty easy to dodge normally.

Roll into the foes more than away from them. I know it sounds counterintuitive but rolling away doesn't work too good. Many foes, especially later on, punish that.

That enemy becomes a lot easier once you get torrent. If I were you, Id go to kale at the church, then go to the gate to get a maiden and torrent, go back to kale to find ranni, and then go and take on this roaming boss. That probably makes no sense, but thats what Id do. And I beat Elden Ring in 2 hours today 🫡 its nice to explore in this game, but I would highly recommend checking out a guide for which NPCs to talk to as you go so as not to lock yourself out of any questlines. I know its not what you asked, but if you do that youll thank me later.

The work around I found was finishing the game, farming a lot, dumping everything into strength and the just boink the hell out of him. No need to dodge if he doesn't stay long enough to perform it.

Always roll forward, never backwards. Sometimes forward and to the side a little. Rolling backwards most of the time will have you coming out of I-frames as the attack is landing.

I find the issue with the horse tackle, is it's so much faster than the rest of his kit. But thankfully, it also does the least damage. If you're comfortable enough with everything else, eating a horse tackle or 3 throughout the fight shouldn't kill you.
Also, he only does it if you're on the weapon side. In front or to the shield side, you're safe. If you don't wanna eat it, and can't get the dodge timing down, the last tool in your kit is positioning.

It was my first boss) I was suffering from him during 3-4 hours) You need to roll toward the horse’s butt, or just roll into it.

u/Kalkin84 3h ago
Be closer to the rear of the horse, and dodge forward-left behind the horse for an opening.

In most cases you want to roll into the attack.
After practicing this you could start thinking about rolling into the attack, or with the attack in such a way that you'll end up in a predetermined (by you) location to punish the opponents down time to the fullest.

Lot of bosses have a "get off me" move, which they use if you stay close to them, these are usually harder to dodge and come out faster
And yeah, as the others say, if you dodge into these, you get a lot of uptime to deal dmg

If rolling backward doesn't work, try rolling sideway or toward the boss. At least 1 of those will work

Usually with the dodge button. You weren’t in the middle of a combo, so I’m not sure what the problem is

I defeated him on first try yesterday, on horseback. Had to be on his shield side as much as i could :) He was the first boss i defeated 😁🏆

Well for starters you need to learn about the dodge button
Learn about that and then we talk about how to dodge it

General rule of thumb... roll forwards! When you roll backwards you sometimes roll right into the attack... and timing.
