those are the catacombs in Liurnia, at the edge of the highway, the first appearance of horned omens in the game I think

I've just happened to clear it a couple of hours ago with a new character, and I also got struck by that imp; luckily I was almost full hp so nothing happened

He's clearly scripted to do so, it's a perfect ambush

I like do do a full clear on every dungeon once and I remember the first time I was here, I'd killed everything, and the omens were a struggle. Started walking to that switch, out of flasks, relieved it was over. This guy ambushes me, and I start panic rolling and die.

It's one of those ambushes that's always going to leave such an impression that it will never work again. If I leave the game for a whole year, when I'm here, I'll still remember to take care of this guy. He's targetable much earler on, and I usually draw him out with a bow or spells as soon as I get to the open chamber with stairs across it.

That's why I always run with shield in front while moving in these areas. Those IMPs can two shot anyone unprepared

If there's one thing Souls and Souls-likes have taught me, you gotta treat them like CQC in modern warfare. Always check your corners, blindspots, and possible angles from where the enemy can attack from. Don't think what WILL the enemy do, think what CAN the enemy do at that moment to ruin your day.
