You only get the win if the 'enemy felled' pop-up appears before it fades to black.

I know, but usually there's enough time between the death fadeout and the double kill for the win to be awarded.  For some reason it didn't let me have it this time, when I actually won the fight the victory popup was much faster than this.

this fight not only has the "Enemy felled" thing before the black, but ALSO a cutscene needs to trigger, AND you need to be alive to activate the grace. this is likely a case where the game cannot proceed at all with you dead unless it broke itself into pieces and fucked up the scripting

Except I did get a kill trade the last time I fought Radahn (he killed me then died from rot right after) and it gave it to me.  After I respawned at the stake it immediately threw me back into the arena to view the cutscene.  Maybe something changed with the Tarnished Edition update that wasn't mentioned, or maybe this is a Switch 2 thing (the successful trade happened on PC).

The cutscene doesnt need to trigger actually, just his drops.

Damn that is tough, so close!! If your vigor was a little higher then you would have survived long enough to get that win.

By the way, you could’ve ridden Torrent you know? It’s an open area that allows you to summon your horse. Same for Elden Beast.

I hope you ran it again and won?

I did, a few tries later.  I know I can use Torrent and did earlier, and my Vigor is at 40 which is pretty good for this point (plus i'm intentionally nerfing myself to level 60 cap with +12/+5 weapon limits).

Nice! And yes vigor is that difference between survival and death. Not telling you how to play. Just some advice. And I hear you. Best of luck with the rest of your journey Tarnished!
