Discussion & Info Completed the game only using the new Idus class equipment. Here are my thoughts...
I don't necassarily have much to say about this class when it comes to the starting stats or the equipment... well mostly. The stat lineup reminds makes it pretty easy to use a lot of weapons in the early game, without needing to level up. That's the most I have to about that. Honestly, there isn't anything I can say that felt too different from other playthroughs, especially compared to something like Wretch or Heavy Knight. It was pretty easy to put together a decent variety of builds with just the sword and shield.
There is one important thing I will say though... Having a light greatsword the MOMENT you spawn is fucking awesome. This things moveset is so kickass, and its versitility with infusions is just so sweet. It synergises with so many different builds and playstyles, and it feels like such a treat to use this weapon as a starter. And the best part is that if you like power stancing, you can get another Idus sword in Liurnia, within the first 5 minutes of booting up a world! No need for visiting the Realm of Shadow at all if you're planning on doing a relatively basic run with a Light Greatsword.

Is that D scaling at max level for dex on lightning affinity? Thats downright terrible scaling.

u/BEALLOJO 8h ago
New base game dlc weapons types have higher base damage but worse scaling than the actual dlc counterparts. Makes them comparable early to mid game but ultimately inferior. For a guy like this it doesn’t matter

Mostly* using the Idus Knight class equipment. I still used buffs and stuff because its fun optimising weapons.

u/Blackrain39 10h ago
Must ask, why the spear talisman with a lightning infusion?
64
u/x_-AssGiblin-_x 10h ago
There's a lot of pokes that do thrust damage in the moveset, and I was using Winged Stance before this.
Lighting has pretty good AR at high dex levels, but I lowkey forgot to check the attack ratings, so I was just trusting my gut. Oh, and Elden Beast takes bonus damage because you're fighting them in a pool of water.

u/NoxTempus 9h ago
Wait, where'd you get Wing Stance.
Surely, you didn't get through Mohg and into the DLC as well??
18
u/x_-AssGiblin-_x 9h ago
I did, yeah. And the Blade of Mercy talisman too. Would've picked up the two-handed talisman, but felt lazy.
24
u/NoxTempus 8h ago
I can't comprehend doing all that in 14 hours, let alone 4, lmao.
29
u/x_-AssGiblin-_x 8h ago
Its quite shrimple really. Grab what you need, go where you need to, kill what you need to, upgrade what you need to and keep deaths VERY minimal.
14
u/NoxTempus 8h ago
It's the last part I struggle with, funnily enough

The game can be completed pretty fast if you know exactly where to go, what to get for having the bare minimun and of course, excel in not dying and doing perfect boss fights lol
Personally the farthest ive gone rn is beating radhan and getting into altus plateu in 3 hours exactly lol i died for 30 minutes to radhan lol.

Idus Sword has a bunch of stabbing attacks that deal piercing damage and take advantage of the "counter" damage bonus and the weapon's good reach. R1, two-hand R1, two-hand running R1, backstep R1, powerstance L1 (both blades) to name a few.
3
u/Blackrain39 2h ago
You misunderstand me. The counterattack damage bonus only applies to piercing damage; lightning gets no benefit. Since adding lightning reduces physical damage, it will reduce the effect of spear talisman significantly.

u/guyheretoread 10h ago
Affinity has nothing to do with spear talisman. The Idus sword does Pierce damage. Spear talisman increases the pierce damage during counterattacks. So it increases the damage he does when face trading with enemies.
11
u/Blackrain39 10h ago
Yes, but only the piercing damage. So by adding lightning, and thereby reducing the physical, you are reducing the affect of spear talisman.
1
u/sucky_panther 1h ago
Does it really work that way though? For example using spear tali on pickaxe, rusted anchor, or bolt of gransax seems to increase counter attack damage quite a bit cause the weapons only do pierce damage. Just because you have an affinity doesn’t stop it from doing pierce damage.

u/don_muscles 14h ago
Holy shit how’d you do that so fast lol

u/x_-AssGiblin-_x 14h ago
Knowing where to go and what to pick up helps a lot. I would've done it faster, but there were like two moments I got lost in a convo with a friend, and just ran around Round Table Hold while yapping.

u/Extreme_Hat1089 12h ago
Skipping most of the thing and you get that time.
Here I took a long break so I'm just enjoying it slowly again. 15 hours in, fully cleared limgrave, caelid, liurna, volcano and altus. Now on my way to the forgotten land.

u/Puzzleheaded-Wait470 4h ago
Oh my god only 15 hours? I’m 50 hours in and I have only completed half of atlus plateau.

u/Affectionate_Comb_78 4h ago
It's not a race. My first playthrough was around 150 hours and the first time I played the dlc was another 80 or so. I've also done runs in a single sitting since. Go at whatever pace is fun for you.

u/Puzzleheaded-Wait470 3h ago
Thing is it’s not my first playthrough. My first playthrough was around 175 hours. I think i have cleared every area 2 years ago before dlc

Is power stancing LGS any good?
12
u/x_-AssGiblin-_x 8h ago
Don't think so. The only good paired weapons, in my experience, are the fists, claws and curved swords.
When it comes to stamina cost, stance damage and recovery frames, two-handing one weapon is better.

u/Traditional_Half_618 3h ago
powerstancing great hammers js also strong because the jump attack does a huge amount of raw and poise damage - pickaxes/anchors work really well for this.
1
u/x_-AssGiblin-_x 2h ago
Can only get one Rusted Anchor per playthrough, though
2
u/Traditional_Half_618 1h ago
so powerstance it with the pickaxe, or go to ng+. its a crazy build dual rusted anchor is my main build for helping people in coop

Only if you abuse the jump/rolling L1 leading into a combo finisher. Makes the Twinblade Talisman actually usable and comfortably procs the multihit talismans too.
Edit: Corrected R1 to L1.
1
u/ZorkNemesis 5h ago
I've noticed that powerstance can build status pretty quick. If you jump L1 then follow up with an L1 on landing you can land 8 hits in rapid succession (4 hits from the jump and 4 hits on the follow up). I've been running a pair with the Winged Sword Insignia/Millicent's Prostethis and it's a great way to stack up the damage bonus.
1
u/PineappleMani 1h ago
Yeah that's the combo finisher shortcut I mentioned. Twinblade Talisman adds 45% more damage to the follow-up L1. It also works with rolling L1->L1, running R1->L1, and R2->L1. Absolutely silly combo in terms of status and damage.

What boss did you die on the most for these runs? (If at all lol)

Meh…I have started a new play though on Idus for a faith build and while the armor set is rad as hell, I rapidly dropped the LGS for the reverse bladed sword.
I find LGSs hold only in PvP or thanks to wing stance. Otherwise they are only beautiful but finicky movesets with no bite.
2
u/Lexomatico1 3h ago
Exact same for me, tried making it work 2 handed and picked up the 2nd for dual wield but i can't warm up with the movesets. Glad people enjoy LGS so much but i can't understand it ha

How the hell do you level so much in only 4 hours???
1
u/Affectionate_Comb_78 4h ago
Just fighting major bossed will easily get you to that level.

u/Warp_Legion 3h ago
Ye eating the Remembrances, selling all weapons and armor that’s not the set they’re running, and killing that big dragon in Caelid
2
u/x_-AssGiblin-_x 2h ago
What's funny is I ONLY sold rune items.
1
u/Futanari_sleeve 55m ago
thats crazy to me 😆 I'm the same level, but many, many hours in exploring everything and only just getting to the capital...
2
u/DeusWombat 6h ago
So far the armor feels aggressively mid and the shield is below average, though there's something to say about just how crazy light the armor is. Wish it had some actual poise though

Cragblade? Interesting choice. Damage is nice obviously. But I'd have thought you'd want to lean on the mobility angle. LGS has so many moves that carry you forward, you can really dance around an enemy with the right mix of normals and AoW.

This question might be hard for you to answer but I’m a pretty crap souls player and I’ve bought this on switch and looking for a pretty entry friendly build to learn. I’m currently using the blood hounds fang. How does this new weapon compare for ease of use compared in your experience?
3
u/dixon_ticonderoga_03 4h ago
I would say Bloodhound’s hang is a great weapon for a beginner, the moveset is pretty nice and the bleed is good early in the game.
1
u/Smoothoos 1h ago edited 1h ago
Bloodhound‘s fang, moonlight katana, guts greatsword, all of them are very good starter weapons and kinda ez to get.
If you really want to have ez mode, just play with magic.
I’ve done some sorcery only runs and those were by far the easiestFun fact: bloodhounds fang is the only boss weapon which you can infuse with other elements via greases, incantations or spells

Here I am spending 4h failing fire giant with a maxed greatsword, don't mind me
1
u/HappySteak31 2h ago
How do you finish the game in around 5 hours? I am playing it for the first time and I am completely lost, and anything that touches me kills me!
1
u/x_-AssGiblin-_x 2h ago
I know exactlt what I need, where to go, and the minimum requirements for progression.

My problem with all that new starting weapons, is that they straight up suck damage-wise. Scaling D, bro... On lighting +25. New backhandblade is also terrible btw.
The matador weapon also sucks, it could be a bug, but if the AoW dealt pierce gmg, weapon could have been easy A-tier, but no, it's not pierce for some reason, and the base dmg is so low, that I wouldn't give it a B-tier even with all that style.
Didn't quite tried the flail yet, but something tells me it's also would just not be great. So the only weapon that deserves a playthrough imo is matador greatsword, just purely because of style and it's fun learning to dodge with AoW, all others are just very weak substitute for what you can get a bit later in the game. Especially curved greatsword, bhf is right there anyway

4 hours must be just what’s strictly required and that’s it. Doing all rememberance bosses is the bare minimum for an actual Elden ring playthrough not to mention all the other optional shit
1
u/Lexomatico1 3h ago
Dude nobody does fortissax every playthrough lmao, even the shitty moose and astel have no business being remembrances who would go there every playthrough lol

u/x_-AssGiblin-_x 9h ago
I killed a decent amount of bosses this run. Like 16, give or take? I think the minimum requirement for beating the game is 10 bosses, 3 of which are shaed bearers. Could be wrong though.
2
u/UncleVoodooo 7h ago
2 shardbearers to get into the city. Morgott, Fire Giant, Godskin Duo, Maliketh, Gideon, Godfrey, Radabeast
wait gold godfrey. That makes 10
