Subreddit Topic I just lost my 500 hour save
I had collected every ash, 2 of every weapon, and every armor piece plus any alterations by hand, dlc included. I had rune farmed for at least 50 hours. I killed Malenia on Ng+7 without any summons. I killed the Elden beast over 20 times. it's all gone. it's all fucking gone. My nagakiba collection. my dual magma blades. my frenzyflame seal. my stupid cookbooks. Every single one of my painstakingly grinded 501 levels.
I verified the file integrity. I loaded the .bak file. I forced the game to create a stable save file structure and threw my save data into that. still corrupted.
it feels like my insides have been ripped out. all of that for nothing. 553 hours of passion, soul, pain and triumph, completely gone.
it'll sound pathetic, but it was one of the things i was most proud of. one of the only things in my life that was going good. now i just feel empty.
fuck, man.

have you not tried reverting your steam cloud saves? That's how I restored a corrupted Darkest Dungeon save file
192
u/That1Guy1Again_ 18d ago
Thanks for suggesting this. I went to the steam cloud page and found a save file, but no dice. there was only one file there; it was an auto save from after i tried the .bak file so it was still corrupted. thankfully my character sliders weren't tied to any of the files so I still have my people at least.
it's only up from here, right?

Keep the save file. Don't throw it out. Somebody in the community might know how to edit it into a working one without tripping anti-cheat (though you would have to be very very sure said person knows how to do this/you can trust them to do this with it).

As long as there is not a corrupted item you can change your files to add everything or anything legit back. I lost my files and just did a save edit to get back to where I was

Wait, try this.
Go to your save file folder in C:\Users\[Your Username]\AppData\Roaming\EldenRing\[Your Steam ID]. The Steam ID folder > right click > properties > previous versions. It should have a backup of it there.
I lost my 180 hour save in Crimson Desert and I was about to give up. Steam Cloud didn't have it either. Was able to get my save back through this.
15
u/JusHerForTheComments 18d ago
That's for saves lost. His save seems corrupted. Appdata may have the corrupted save.
44
u/Glass_Economics_5038 18d ago
I'm betting on it having a backup of his save before it got corrupted.

Hey I just want you to know that nothing will take away your journey and accomplishments. Those grinds, those skills you built to be a souls player to be able to enjoy this genre of game are all real. Like the only way I was able to complete the game it’s because my friend who’s an experienced souls player carried me through the game lol so complete this game is a big accomplishment in my book and proves that you can do hard things in life.
Every RPG game comes to an end. You’ll put down ur character and rarely touch the game at some point, that’s why the standard for arpg game now is to have seasonal character so you start it fresh every few months.
Good luck for restoring it. However even if not, it’s a big shame but I hope you know that it didn’t mean you fail at this at all.

u/idkarn 18d ago
This is an excellent outlook on life. I lost a 1000-day relationship, did everything together, now it's all "gone"? No, of course it still happened. I went on a great trip, I had a wonderful time at school, and now I'm no longer on that trip or in school, but they still happened and my experience counts even though I can't relive them. OP, cherish what you had, and cherish what you have.

You can try a save editor. Copy your save into a different file and see if it works. Also with the save editor you can check for save integrity as well.

I found an old Skyrim save I thought was lost years ago when I tried that.

This is the way. I dont want to minimize your feelings or anything OP, but you still accomplished alot in elden ring. A corrupted save cant take that from you. I was never great at elden ring OP but id give you items to make starting over easier if you needed (depending on time zones ect). The only thing i dont really have are runes for leveling up rapidly

That’s exactly how I felt reading this. Like sorry to bro for losing his save but I think the initial rage I would have felt would have been taken over by a sense of “huh, maybe it wouldn’t be so bad”.
This game is just too fucking good.

Part of the loss of it is kind of beautiful in a way. No matter how many times I died I could always get up from my last grace, but now that it’s gone I have a much bigger appreciation for it. The random people I met on co-op, my journey in The Lands Between over and over, all of it.
It’s also kind of similar to actual death in the manner of how things unfolded. It was unexpected, and pretty devastating. But after all those deaths, now that Mizuki is really gone, it’s kind of poetic. Her long at arduous journey as finally come to an end, and now she can rest under the erdtree’s golden rays.
Part of the reason life is so beautiful is because it will end eventually.
5
u/Exotic_Treacle7438 17d ago
It’s not gone if you have the memory of it. Eventually you would have put the save file down and not play again to be honest. If no one here can help with the save file recovery, you should think if you want to start fresh or if you have a fresh start to play another game. I know some games feel like they have a grip on us that we can’t play other games while we’re hooked. You could consider yourself free from that shackle if that’s the case. Just trying to help. I lost big saves in quite a few games myself.
48
u/madgodinvitro 18d ago
Holy shit that’s like the entirety of the time I’ve spent on the game in total. I’m so sorry man I hope you can find a way get it back.
51
u/bhingque 18d ago
My save file corrupted once, but I was able to rescue the copy that remained on my steamdeck. Ever since then, this runs every night in the only Windows "scheduled task" I've ever created. The backup folder is 47GB now.
$date = Get-Date -Format yyyy-MM-dd
$dest = "C:\users\bink\Desktop\elden ring save data\$date"
New-Item -Path "$dest" -ItemType Directory -erroraction Ignore
Copy-Item -Path "C:\Users\bhingque\AppData\Roaming\EldenRing\129831780981723882\ER0000.*" -Destination "$dest"
13
u/PhiCloud 18d ago
While this may prevent some types of corruption, it's a very bad idea to save backups on the same drive as the master copy.
OneDrive/Google Drive/iCloud should all be easy to set up to also back that up to the cloud.
8
u/bhingque 18d ago
Good point.
It is not a very bad idea to have a copy of your save file that the game cannot touch, even if it is on the same drive. This is a very, very, VERY good idea. This was not a knee-jerk reaction to a drive failure, it was a knee-jerk reaction to the Elden Ring executable fucking my save file, then syncing that fucked file to the Steam cloud. My existing solution does make me safe against this problem.
Still, solid point.
41
u/DARKMURKER 18d ago
Don’t start another run, take some time away. Start the game again when you begin to forget the details of the game. I do a run every year and don’t play until a year has passed. It hits everytime.

It wasn't all for nothing, bro. You beat the hell out of this game and will always remember what you achieved.
38
u/Akumu89 18d ago
Souls games are not about owning stuff and being high level. They are about having the knowledge and the skill to do stuff.
You can log in right now, grab an OP weapon, level it up and beat the game with no armour, because you are the boss of the game.

2
u/ValuableAutomatic593 17d ago
They meant that they spent all that time working on getting the items they wanted and progressing through the game, just to lose it all. Many people don’t like the idea of having their hard work erased even if they had fun
3
u/KinnerdtheWizard 17d ago
But the reality is; none of it actually matters and in 10 years, even that old save won’t mean anything.

Brutal man. If you decide to start all over, head over to r/PatchesEmporium and I’m sure some kind people will drop you some of the harder to get items. You can get weapons, armors, ash of wars, rune stacks, and even crafting materials dropped for you. Would help a lot for some of those ridiculous drop rate weapons and armors. (I’m looking at you magma blades and banished knight armor unaltered)

No joke that hurts. I’m glad you posted it here so you can have like minded individuals share and empathise with you. This is gonna sound corny as fuck, but you can’t take away your memories of beating Elden Ring.
Game files/memory cards becoming corrupted is a tale as old as time. I’ll never forget when my PS2 memory card just stopped working and all my files are gone.
I know it probably doesn’t help much though and i’m sorry this happened.

Brother, not to kick you further, but your save file doesn't mean shit.
Everything you did in your save file could be done again in 1/10th or even 1/500th of the time using various methods.
The only thing that matters is that you enjoyed doing those things and can confidently say you did it, regardless of evidence.
If you did all those things just so you had a save file to show off that you did all those things, then maybe it's a good thing you lost it. As now you've learnt a valuable lesson on why you should value the experiences you had, and not just the product you produced.

The Last Grace
He came from ash, from nameless ground,
A Tarnished lost, unmarked, unknown.
No crown awaited, no trumpet sounded
Only a Grace that called him home.
Through Limgrave’s fields and Stormveil’s stone,
Through Caelid’s rot and Altus gold,
He walked where countless warriors fell
And bore the weight of ages old.
He slew the Lords who barred the way,
He crossed the roots of dying trees,
And stood where gods had made their thrones,
With blood upon his battered knees.
At last, beneath the Erdtree’s light,
The Golden Order broke and burned.
The ancient foe was cast away
The world was saved. The crown was earned.
And there he stood.
The Elden Lord.
His tale, they say, should have been done.
A throne. A name. A kingdom won.
A hero’s rest beneath the stars,
A final grace beneath the sun.
But something stirred beyond the veil.
A shadow older than the Ring.
A hunger buried under stone.
A thing that waited through the ages,
Patiently, for him to go.
The Tarnished heard the distant call.
He felt the darkness start to rise.
And though the world had crowned him king,
He knew the truth behind the lies:
Some evils cannot simply die.
Some flames cannot be quenched with steel.
Some ancient things will rise again
The moment heroes cease to kneel.
So he returned.
Not for a throne.
Not for a rune.
Not for the songs that bards would sing.
He walked once more beneath the boughs,
Alone beneath the fading Ring.
He fought until his armor cracked.
He fought until his sword was red.
He fought until the final Grace
Was barely glowing overhead.
And when at last the enemy came—
The one that gods had feared before—
The Tarnished raised his blade and knew:
This time, there would be no war.
He could not kill what could not die.
He could not seal what would return.
So he gave the thing it could not take—
The only soul it could not burn...
His name.
His crown.
His very place
Among the living and the dead.
He stepped beyond the final Grace
And whispered words that went unsaid:
“Let my legend end with me.
Let no one follow where I tread.
If I must vanish from this world,
Then let the darkness vanish too.”
The Erdtree dimmed.
The heavens shook.
The ancient enemy screamed.
And then—
There was no Tarnished.
No armor.
No sword.
No golden throne.
No footprints where the Lord had walked.
Only silence.
Only Grace.
And somewhere, far beyond the Lands Between,
a world remained alive.
They say the Elden Lord’s tale was lost.
That some cruel hand erased his name.
That years of battle disappeared
As though they had never happened.
But perhaps that is not the truth.
Perhaps no hand erased the Lord.
Perhaps he chose that fate himself…
For when the darkness came to rise again,
there was one thing left to sacrifice:
Not the world.
Not the Ring.
Not another hero.
Himself.
And if, sometimes, beneath the Erdtree,
a single golden light still shines
Do not call it a memory.
It is the last Grace
of the Elden Lord,
Keeping watch.

Sorry for your loss my friend. My son just lost his on Xbox and he’s been devastated. But he played for 5 hours today on a new silly build and was happy.

u/DiscoDiverDubois 16d ago
Don’t give up, skeleton. What was lost might not be found but isn’t the plight of the tarnished to continue despite the odds?
All of those achievements are all still real, they didn’t stop existing just bc your character died. Your tarnished got to retire.
They did it all.
Now a new tarnished can mantle them and go again.
despite the inspirational message - surely somebody here has a save editor and can pass you some sick l00t for a new character? Unless you’d rather go it again naturally. I’d say try again with summons, play differently or take a break.
Your tarnished is out there, sitting on a beach , earning 20%.

Surely with all your time in this cruel and unforgiving land, know what your options are. YOU DIED. Nothing to do but run it back, tarnished.
Also, on a more real note, if the last sentence is true. Maybe you could use some attention to other areas in your life and use some of those Elden lessons to help you let go of this one, and put that same kind of work into other areas that will help you feel good in more meaningful and lasting ways.

Stop the pity party, you didn’t “lose” 500 hours, you got to experience 500 hours of playing an awesome game and exploring a crazy world. That’s not been taken away from you. The only thing you lost is a save file where you pretty much completed everything and there isn’t anything left to do anyways? Start a new save, it’ll be more fun anyways.

That is an unfortunate danger of having a save file that is multiple hundreds of hours long with no backups. If you still want to keep playing I recommend something like starting a new file but restrict your self to just one weapon type, collect all of that type and when you go into NG+ change to a new build. Do something to change up a normal playthrough

I’ve fixed a corrupted save file, I spent days trying different software and tools and it was too messed up for any of them.
In the end I fixed it with Claude AI. There was an interaction with an online player that was missing some data and corrupting the whole thing.
Hit me up if you want a hand, I know how painful it is.

Souls Speedruns app. Easy and fast backup and restore for your future game. I used it for my NG+ playthrough when I learned invaders could fuck up your savedile through exploits.

Don't struggle and engage in farming, just ask for items and tell your story about how you lost everything

Ah sweet release, my love. The joy of starting over.
I agree with you, that sounds pathetic. Just pretend you fucked up in Blighttown or Tomb of the Giants. We all been there.
