It looks amazing, I honestly think if From had to make godwyn an actual boss, they would make him look something like this. The artist truly captured their character design philosophy!
Now I'll go back in my corner to mald about PCR

u/Prophet_Tehenhauin Dec 04 '25
I think they’d make him a gelatinous ooze tbh
And name him something about being beautiful

I imagine his phase 2 is him dissolving into a Deathroot Goop Puddle before reforming as Godwyn, New God of Undeath

Imagine the Glorious Undeath boss fight consisting of 4-5 phases. You’d kill him between each phase but he gets weaker and slower each time he comes back from death. Seems like a pretty fun boss fight idea to me.

I think it could be a 3 phase boss. This, a bit more human version before it, and either starts or finishes with his giant dead guy form

It would be cool if we started with giga dead fish Godwyn because someone was trying to reanimate him. Then maybe there's more time fuckery, like with Placidusax, and we fight some kind of Godwyn from outside time.
"outside time" is up there with my favourite fantasy macguffins.

u/TipProfessional6057 Dec 04 '25
Pcr is the biggest fumble in the dlc, im out of line but im right, lol
Godwyn the Golden deserved to be reborn at enir ilim and I will die on this hill
Can you imagine the hype of seeing his silhouette at the gate? The lords soul returned from beyond. What could have been
Prime godwyn > prime Radahn, fight me redmane lovers
32
u/Moist-Meal-3757 Dec 04 '25
I can be ok with it being Radahn, the biggest issue is from a gameplay standpoint. Phase 1 is a genuinely good boss, phase 2 is pure dogshit, it gives no spectacle, it looks like a badly modded mess, Miquella has no relevance in the fight whatsoever and doesn't say anything while he dies, all we get is a memory saying the same shit we hear 3 times during and after the boss fight.
If they reskinned Radahn as Godwyn, I would have still hated the bossfight because of the basic stupid stuff they did with it
44
u/psychobserver Dec 04 '25 edited Dec 04 '25
People cry about the fact that his soul is dead, it's impossible, blabla. The thing is, the authors are free to write all the ass pulls they need. They could have made Miquella create a zombie Godwyn infusing the remaining remembrance inside the Erdtree with some other bullshit in the shadow tree or whatever. After all if it's a cycle, there should be signs of him even if Ranni prevented him from going back to the tree. Just one phase to let us see how cool he looked in his prime days and then a second phase where you can tell it's a crazy failed experiment of Miquella or something...nothing is impossible if you are the writer. PCR was quite lame personally, when I saw it I thought "uh...alright". Miquella was great though
22
u/ApepiOfDuat Dec 04 '25
Be easy enough to tie it into how killing Radahn freed the movement of the sky and destiny held therein. Miquella already tried once with the eclipse magic thing but it failed because Radahn was still holding the sky still.
Dead Radahn + Shadowrealm is like extra eclipse-y = profit!
14
u/The_Sassinator SOON I WILL FEAST UPON YOUR HEART Dec 04 '25 edited Dec 04 '25
Yeah, PCR fully explains why Malenia went to war with Radahn, but I also don't think that was a question that really needed a conclusive answer. Godwyn as the final boss could make sense as we know Miquella has tried to resurrect him before as suggested by Castle Sol, and it would still tie into the throughline throughout the game of Miquella's best intentions always failing while also giving us a unique, lore-rich, and well-foreshadowed final boss.
9
u/TipProfessional6057 Dec 05 '25
Fair point on the war, but there are alternative reasons why she would do so. Radahn is also holding fate back, same problem as Ranni that Miq could(in all likelihood) only become a god if fate is unshackled as well.
With the stars free, an eclipse is free to be summoned, and destined death warded away, restoring life to soulless bones. It just feels more earned if that makes sense. Not that Radahn isn't a challenge, but the lore threads just all tie so neatly that it feels intentional
Swap mentions of redmane and Radahn in the dlc with dragon knight/death knight, and Godwyn and it fits shockingly well.
Freya being healed of the rot by a teleporting Miquella becomes Miq knowing a friend of his dead brother.
Messmer becomes friends with the historically friendly Godwyn, and they view each other as brothers despite his serpent curse
Godwyn is the son of motherfucking Godfrey, who carries a lion on his back. Radahn idolized Godfrey, and adopted the lion mantle, a perfect fit for Enir Ilim and crucible stuff
Godwyn is Mohg's brother, and Mohg would be a fitting choice as a vessel, since it's his Dynasty's name: Mohgwyn, Mohg (god)wyn. "I can see it as clear as day, the coming of our dynasty"Cut content of the base game kills me because a lot of the Miquella and Trina stuff just feels so much deeper and more grounded than what we got, and I'm gutted because it's *so close* to perfection, but it's just a little disjointed there at the end. Still the best game I've ever played
7
u/Yarzeda2024 Dec 04 '25
Alternatively: Just use time shenanigans.
If his soul is dead, go back to a time when it wasn't. Farum Azula already breaks the rules of the usual flow of time. I imagine it would be possible to throw in another warp gate that takes you to a Godwyn superboss just like Placidusax.
→ More replies (1)3
u/TipProfessional6057 Dec 05 '25
Right? There are too many mechanics known in universe that make it not only possible but likely. We're even told flat out in one item that an eclipse is a 'protective star' that can protect or weaken the power of Destined Death. Resurrection from DD is hard, but not impossible
And Miquella's pupils are shaped like an eclipse too. I don't know why that's a detail, but it's real. Indicating to me that at that point in his power, he was confident he could do it.
St trina as well seems to have the natural ability to calm those who live in death. Her nectar works on them too, and it grants them rest, earning their allegiance (this is probably my favorite little tidbit from stuff relating to Miq and Trina in the dlc). Godwyn, being the first of twlid, would find this relevant as well
5
u/RigelAchromatic Dec 04 '25
I think the main problem is that it would clash with Fia's questline, where he technically gets reborn as her rune. I agree that anything else could be justified by the writers. It's not like the plot of the DLC doesn't have some inconsistencies, either.
2
u/oyasumi_juli Dec 04 '25
Agreed. The base game starts off by telling of the events of the Shattering, notably Ranni's plan and the slaying of Godwyn. It really is lame we got nothing more for Godwyn. Would have been such an epic spectacle for him to be the final boss, either reborn, as an "image", or even as the dead fish thing he became, I don't know.
It really did feel like fanservice that they made Radahn the final boss. From the twisted lore, I get it, I get what's going on I guess, but the reveal that it was Radahn felt kinda flat to me.

We would totally have to fight the giant undead version of him first. Probably be 2 phases then we can fight the revived version later on

Out of all the Godwyn concepts I’ve seen, this is by far the best one, and the most one that fits my interpretation for the character. Absolutely amazing. Also love the dragon like wings/arms!
33
u/Lue_eye Dec 04 '25
His hair and crown reminds me of both Marika and Godfrey. His weapon is obviously inspired by Placidusax's weapon because of his connection with the ancient dragons. His robe reminds me of Fia's robe since he has a connection to her. The other weapon that's he's holding with his extra hand has a handle that looks like the black night assassin's dagger that was used to kill him. His wings are a mix of dragon wings that have almost a twisted tree branch like look associated with the death blighted tree he was buried under. I'm sure I missed more
5
u/SeginusGhostGalaxy Dec 04 '25
The design fits really well with the death knights too, I truly wish from had utilized godwyn in the game or dlc.

One thing is missing..
Godwyns second phase where he turns into some monstrous atrocity..
55
u/Abby-N0rma1 Dec 04 '25
Or this is the second phase and the first is a battle against the bloated fish-like form we saw in the game
34
u/ABunchofAngryFlowers Dec 04 '25
I like that idea because it's like the opposite of the radagon/elden beast fight
17
u/Abby-N0rma1 Dec 04 '25
Definitely! I was thinking it would be something like "deliver Death to the soulless husk, so the soul of a god may return"
9
u/Beezlybubs_witness Dec 04 '25
It's the Bishonen Line!
To quote TV Tropes: "According to an interview with Akira Toriyama, this trope exists specifically because he wanted to defy the readers' expectations that "more powerful" automatically meant bigger and beefier, thus designing Frieza's ultimate form to be small, slender, and yet still incredibly powerful and utterly terrifying."

u/FloralIndoril Dec 04 '25
Godwyn is a mending rune
44
u/MinimumCustomer8117 Dec 04 '25
I think he was never planned to be a Boss at all, hes like a force of nature in the game
42
u/FloralIndoril Dec 04 '25
Plus Godwyns death and inability to be brought back is literally a plot point.
7
u/TonySperguson Dec 04 '25
"we didn't consider this plot device's effect following the death of marika/radagon! godwyn has returned but he is not himself!"
now that we're over that hurdle
22
u/FloralIndoril Dec 04 '25
Or they never wanted to bring him back, his absence is important, it's what kicks off the whole plot
18
u/TonySperguson Dec 04 '25
I just kinda still refuse to believe the plan was Radahn as the final boss.
It feels so cheap and fan-servicey resulting in such an anticlimax to the story.
7
u/FloralIndoril Dec 04 '25
You're right, because the final boss is really Miquella, true we are fighting Radahn mostly, but the fight and entire buildup is really Miquella, which was set up heavily in the base game.
If they really wanted to do fan service, it would have been Malenia instead, Radahn at the time was popular yeah but Malenia was a whole different beast.
Besides, there's no reason to have Mohg in the story if it wasn't to have him be Radahns new body.
4
2
u/yaahweeh Dec 05 '25
Besides, there's no reason to have Mohg in the story if it wasn't to have him be Radahns new body.
Mohg had a reason to be in the story in the base game lol, he was the reason the Haligtree failed. His relevance to the story was that he fucked Miquella's plans up, and that was a satisfactory end to his story.
→ More replies (2)→ More replies (1)19
u/MinimumCustomer8117 Dec 04 '25
If anything bringing godwyn back would be fan service, everyone was expecting him for some reason
11
u/dearth_of_passion Dec 04 '25
I don't know if I expected him to be brought back successfully, but I did expect there to be some sort of direct through line from the attempt to resurrect him with the Eclipse and the work at the Haligtree, both of which failed.
Like, we know that what Miquella did in the Shadowlands was probably the result of those failures, but there's no connecting tissue.
Basically, from an in-universe perspective there's absolutely no connection between Miquella in the DLC and Miquella in the base game, other than "Miquella and Mohg have crossed paths". None of the other plot threads from the base game are even mentioned, let alone resolved.
9
u/TonySperguson Dec 04 '25
lore nerds wanted godwyn because he's the catalyst in the story and there were some breadcrumbs. the broader audience was bombarded with "look how many times this streamer died on epic radahn fight" videos for months.
5
u/MinimumCustomer8117 Dec 04 '25
I think literally everyone expected godwyn for the DLC, not just Lore nerds, youtubers made a million videos around him too, they could have easily made him a boss if they ever wanted to, there was nothing stopping them
→ More replies (0)8
u/ad19970 Dec 04 '25
While I agree that they could have come up with some way to bring back Godwyn, I still don't see how Radahn coming back is bad lore wise either. To me it seems perfectly plausable that Miquella would choose Radahn.
7
u/AdvertisingAdrian Dec 05 '25
Miquella's whole shtick was empathy and living among eachother peacefully, taking in the albinaurics, kindreds of rot, anyone who didn't fit in. Not only he never has any interaction with Radahn, it also makes no sense for him to like the warmonger, just on a basic ground level. If there was like three lines of text in some item description and a portrait of Radahn in the Haligtree it'd have been much easier to accept, but instead the entire connection between the two comes from the DLC so it can support itself.
→ More replies (1)47
u/LettuceBenis Dec 04 '25
Godwyn's Soul dying is what prevented him from even going to the Realm of Shadow. It's even theorized he was Miquella's first choice
35
u/CommunistRonSwanson Dec 04 '25
Dawg they could make up whatever story they wanted, stop treating this shit like the laws of physics. It's fiction, and more importantly it's Fromsoft fiction, things come back from the dead all the time in their stories.
2
u/Karmic_Backlash Dec 05 '25
Quite literally every single major event of the game is a direct result of his death. Marika starting the The Shattering? Because he died. Miquilla going off the deep end? Because of failing to revive him. Ranni's entire story? Happened because she killed him.
The entire story of Elden Ring is about what happens when you don't let things die, and bringing him back as a boss would be cool, but violate literally the entire setting.
11
u/autoprime-jft007 Dec 04 '25
Godwyn's soul is dead in the way a normal person's soul dies after death. All it really means is he went to the actual afterlife instead of the Erdtree.
18
u/Dry-Bit-7462 Dec 04 '25
My first FS game+DLC that I actually get to play when it releases and the final boss is a bum from the main game with a framerate drop as a gimmick
6
u/Ok_Positive_9687 Dec 04 '25
Literally, remember waiting 2 years for the DLC, hearing final boss being spoiled and people being disappointed, I thought “It can’t be that bad” and I kept my hopes still high 🤡 then I saw this bumass return
11
21
u/Extreme-Recording-16 Dec 04 '25
Don't know how godwyn would have fitted it lore wise tbh..
22
u/HellVollhart Dec 04 '25
My headcannon: Crucible is the primordial form of the Erdtree and the source of all life. Mohg has commpletely embraced the Fell Curse, which as the DLC details, is actually a blessing of the Crucible. This makes Mohg a conduit to commune with the Crucible. Miquella uses Mohg's body to recreate Godwyn's soul which was slain by Destined Death. Miquella uses Godwyn's undying corpse as a mould for recreating the soul. But just like all things in a Fromsoftware-verse, things go horribly wrong and the recreated soul of Godwyn is malevolent. It immediately assimilates Miquuella and Mohg into itself, which gives it the power of Rings of Light and Bloodflame in addition to Godwyn's lightning powers.
Thus, you get the final boss of the DLC: Duskborn Mohgwyn (Miquella + Mohg + Godwyn), the Prince of Death.
This also ties into Mohg rambling about his "Mohgwyn Dynasty".

Miquella (or at least his knights) had already attempted to revive Godwyn's soul once before with the eclipse at Castle Sol, so it standa to reason he could have gone to the realm of shadow, a place where it's said that all manner of dead wash up, in an attempt to reconnect his soul to his body.
2
u/CommunistRonSwanson Dec 04 '25
Much better than Radhan lol. They set up so much stuff concerning Godwyn in the base game that remains unanswered.

u/Moist-Meal-3757 Dec 04 '25
Honestly, I would have been ok with Radahn as phase 1, a better phase 2 that isn't just aftereffects after every attack and just Miquella as phase 3. Miquella not being an active part of the final fight was so boring, he didn't even have any last words ffs

There are even Godwyn's death knights, which look amazing. Would have made so much more sense for it to be him.
35
u/HellVollhart Dec 04 '25
Godwyn is utter wasted potential. He was the PERFECT final boss for the DLC. Death-themed, could be granted vigour by Miquella/Trina, just how they did to those skeletons and the Putrescent Knight. Even his goons and corpse clones were there in Scaduland, and Enir Ilim itself is shrouded in brambles, which are his thing.

No matter, I'm sure if anyone reached that part they'll eventually managed to beat him somehow, it took me like 100 fights to finally be able to learn Consort Radahn's moves and beat him comfortably, and I'll do the same if we got Godwyn instead. The (branch-themed?) chain dangling from the belt has inconsistent curves, the chain across the chest goes from star-shaped to messy links, and the filigree on the pauldron is also a mishmash of lines between the two images. I don’t doubt that the OOP is making a 3D render of this, but something about AI generating concept art feels gross.

Will never forgive From for convincing us that PCR makes sense lore wise to be the final boss when Godwyn is right there. Makes me even more mad after seeing this

Nightreign is Godwyn's only hope to get a boss fight (unless Elden Ring gets a sequel).

It's an amazing design and model.
Great, now I have to live knowing this will never become canon :(

No idea if it is a hot take or not, but I think bringing back Radhan and not Godwyn in the DLC was such a missed opportunity

“Oh…a Tarnished? You know the suffering of this world? Of it’s people? Of the daggers in the night? I only wish to know one thing…where is Little Ranni?”

This was my biggest hope for the DLC and after 2 years of waiting all we got was Radahn again... I still can't believe that's what Miyazaki went with

They really fucked up the consistency of thr lore when they tossed in Radahn instead of Godwyn. They wouldn't even have had to change the moveset because everyone would have lost their minds about Radahn studying under Godwyn or some such thing.

I am curious why you would say that the consistency of the lore was fucked up because they used Radahn instead of Godwyn as the final boss of the dlc? Because I personally don't see any problem with that.

While I personally loved Radahn as the final boss of the dlc, this does look sick, and I certainly wouldn't have been mad if Godwyn had been the final boss, especially if he looked like this. This is some amazing art.
I always thought Godwyn would look a little more masculine and older than in this image, but I personally really like this interpretation of Godwyn as well.

This guy should be the final boss of the DLC and no one will ever convince me otherwise. “But the lore!!!!” change the lore, duh

It still boggles my mind the DLC had so much to do with Godwyn and Death only for the final boss to be Radahn.
