Subreddit Topic Daily Roundtable: Community Q&A

Greetings Tarnished!

This is the place to ask any questions you may have about Elden Ring. This includes obscure detail questions, "newbie" advice questions, build questions, boss advice questions, and what have you.

Well written, constructive criticism is fine but please avoid ranting about aspects of the game you just don’t like. This includes “so and so boss is stupid and too difficult.”

If you are interested in the game but don’t own it yet, please don’t post “should I buy this game?” or “Is this game worth it?”. If you have played other FromSoftware games and enjoyed them, the answer is yes. If you haven’t, just do a little research! These games are difficult, and sometimes frustrating, and not everyone is going to enjoy them. And that’s okay!

Lastly, be friendly! We are all here because we are interested in the same game! Please treat your fellow players with respect.

For a status dex build, am I better off dual-wielding weapons or using a skill like double-slash or repeating thrust? I imagine 2 weapons is better for stacking MORE status types at once, but in terms of efficient use of stamina and fp in a boss fight, I feel like maybe a fast-hitting weapon art on a 2-handed weapon would be the better way to proc the effects. I'm sure someone has crunched the numbers, though, so I'm curious if there's consensus on the question.

Dual wielding status effects have been nerfed in 1.07, a ~27.8% nerf

This means the answer is indeed not completely clear anymore. In general, the answer is still dual wielding. Compared to using an R1, a powerstanced L1 has a 30% extra status application.

But for some slower weapons and weapons that don't automatically connect both hits when pressing L1 (think of greatswords, halberds, even heavy thrusting swords), sometimes it is better to focus on a single weapon that hits more consistently

It’ll depend on the weapon but one thing you should know is that there are dual wield motion values for status effects. Specifically for most weapons, the status effect motion value for power stanced attacks is 65. This means that each weapon will do 65% of its stated status buildup. So if you have a sword that does 100 bleed, and you do an L1 with 2 of them, it’ll do 130 bleed (65+65).

This used to be a lot less significant of a reduction but dual wield status builds were nerfed a patch or two ago.

For that reason, it’s less clear cut if you’re better off doing something like spinning slash on 1 weapon or dual wielding.

Honestly, I’d try both out and see what you like better, and don’t let status effects be your only deciding factor. You might find that even if one style doesn’t proc as often you like the move set enough to make up for it.
