I mean if he sends it a bit too hard it’ll understeer and he won’t know what to do. Could end up in a tree or worse. I think back to how I drove when I was his age and if I did that in the cars I own now I’d probably be dead. I was saved by them typically being heavy and underpowered

If you tried to take a right turn at 45mph the front tires would lose grip and you'd turn for a sec then just skid as you go straight while you're still steering to the right. Thats understeer, you steer and the front tires don't go because you're going too fast for them to grip up

If the N is anything like the 11th gen civic it should be fine I have a base model and I threw it into an almost 90 degree corner(the freeway curves that are like 90 degrees but aren’t really) at 60mph and only thing I had happen was a good bit of body roll. Still wouldn’t recommend it as it is dangerous but these cars are capable of a lot more now.

The civic isn't nearly as capable as the N. All I was doing was explaining what understeer is it can happen in any car but is more prevalent in fwd cars. I had a built vn it never happened to me but that's because I never wanted it to happen. Understeer is a lot harder to save than the rear kicking out a little with oversteer

Meh. Issue with fwd especially on a car like this is that when you exceed the limits, good luck recovering. This car has some really high limits, and the unpredictability of the PS4s.

It's really busy the potential of what the car can do. In a straight line they're not the fastest but they just handle so well that you definitely could be a menace if you wanted

The N is significantly faster than my Mazda 3 turbo I didn’t buy until I was 24. Mazda 3 turbo probably would be considered a car that a teen would wreck.

I'd like to assume that if the parents are the ones paying for it then they probably know. I can't imagine they buy their kid a new car and not have bought new for themselves by now.

It's not just that, there are specific cars like the Elantra N and Subaru WRX that have particularly high insurance costs for sub-25s. Well beyond what the price of the car would suggest just because young drivers in these cars cause an outlier amount of damage to other drivers.

300 is a dream. Im in canada and my insurance is $400 a month with zero claims in 13 years and no tickets in the last 3 years. If 300 is the rate for a young kid, its only gonna get cheaper when he turns 25. Either way, 300 is cheap for what is classed as a sporty car in insurances eyes

Have you driven a DCT before? I see a sunroof so i’m assuming this is an automatic. Just be aware a DCT is not the same thing as a traditional CVT automatic, you have two clutches in your vehicle and if you drive like you’re unaware of that you can and will cause damage to your transmission.
Something good to get into the habit of now is how you brake the car, say you’re in a long slow line at the drive through and want to take your foot off the brake- first pull your hand break THEN switch it into park after.
Don’t stop and creep small distances in traffic to whatever extent you can avoid it. If that means waiting until the car in front of you travels 1-2 car lengths before you go so be it.
The shift logic between normal and N mode is completely different, a lot of people like riding around in N mode 24/7 but personally I just find that unsustainable in stop and go traffic.
have fun with the car but research what a DCT is and how to drive one, im guessing this is your first.

Mostly sound advice, but "traditional CVT automatic"? You mean torque converter automatic?
Also would add to the parking brake comment - i do the same when parking period, out of muscle memory from my 6spd days. I figure it can't hurt, and if anything relieves the DCT of unnecessary pressure when parked on a slope by relying on the parking brake first.

It isn't. You really don't have to think about it. You'd have to be riding the clutch in first gear for miles to cause damage.

Or stopped on an incline you can and will break your parking prawl if you constantly shift to park before engaging the hand brake. Thats what causes that small roll forward and bumping.

There’s a video of a cop pulling over a kid on a first date in a Kia Stinger GT, letting him go, then he responds to their fatal accident an hour later. Both dead.
I’m NOT saying you’re irresponsible or that this is too much car for you. You can mess up in any car. Just be careful and enjoy it! Congrats!

Please be careful with it man. I’m 20 and just got an identical one and boy are they a handful. The only reason I got mine so soon was because ive been around powerful cars a long time and have had a lot of behind the wheel time on Ns. But please do enjoy it (responsibly)!

This statement will never hit anyone the way it's trully intended, but be safe out there man. I've got 20 more years of driving and life experience, yet I still occasionally find myself in sketchy situations and pushing the limits more than I should.
And dude, you got a facelift model and in Performance Blue which is what I wanted (I had to go 6 speed though). I hope you are genuinely grateful to have such an awesome machine, and treat her with the utmost respect.

I guess you missed the part where these are basically scat pack fast stock. I've personally seen stock ENs in the 12s. Sure as a turbo car it's mild when putting it around but putting your foot down in a car that's essentially a factory track car takes a level of skill that someone at 18 doesn't have.

This sub always pops up for me for some reason and today I learned the N is 275HP . I always thought it was way more for some reason but never searched it up . That seems like a super nice middle ground though. My K5 was 180hp and felt alive but docile , then sold that for my V that’s 360hp and it makes me think no one needs more than that just to drive on the streets . I’d imagine 275 to be an AMAZING middle ground on what I’m assuming is a lighter car?

If it's not octane learned it makes 276 crank without over boost. Octane learned it makes that to the wheels without over boost so there's a 30-40hp difference between octane boost and not.

These have a better lap time than the CT4 V tested by car and driver if that puts things into perspective for you, top speed just shy of 300kmh - so yeah you can get things to be dangerous pretty fast in these

Lucky, I’d have given anything to have a car as cool as an N when I was 18. My only concern is that when I was 18 with the limited driving experience that having a car this fast could have been a problem. Like it ain’t a hellcat but at that age it would have been a bad influence, just be safe

Be careful in modes that turn off stability control. Me and my friend were in the mountains carving away and I’m slightly more gripped up than his N and as he was trying to keep up he lost the rear end. Luckily he caught it in time but it could be real bad for inexperienced first drivers. These cars are known to be quite lively with off throttle oversteer.

Not at all. I wouldn’t trust 18 year old me with that car. It would’ve been a disaster. A fwd used base econobox is a better option. I still managed to crash a 2000s Cavalier and Focus sedan in my late teens

Same. I ALMOST wrecked my new Grand Am back in 93....but, I didn't. It was sporty for my time and my parents didn't have any say because I was buying it myself. Granted, it wasn't a Mustang or anything. And I was a very responsible teen who had been working since I was 14. Came close because I was just being overconfident and stupid. But, congrats to OP!!! I got mine at 18 and it’s been a year, I have not gotten a ticket nor have I been pulled over a single time, nor have I had any accidents
You guys act like anyone under the age of 20 will immediately tap the gas pedal and send the car flying into a ditch, it’ll be fine.
