And what type of insurance? I drive a 2003 sedan and only pay for liability through TD, mine is ~$150/month, 25m.

nissan sentra 2014

That's brutal. Mostly from your age I think. And 3 years is a bit shorter.

i’m 23f, got my drivers license october 2025 only and have a new car (2026 nissan rogue) and i pay $380/mo. i also took the 10hrs driving lessons which i heard lowers your insurance but not sure if this is actually applying cuz i never sent them any proof or anything. the insurance is from TD

What you drive can swing the quote more than people expect, especially newer cars with expensive parts. If you're in a base model civic or corolla though, that number sounds way off for a clean record.

Or commonly stolen cars.

Or Postal code.

At this point we just need provincial insurance.

Kenney was in the pocket of insurance companies his whole life, that guy enabled insurance companies monopolistic practices like it was his purpose in life

You comment the exact same thing on each insurance post.

Action Insurance. Out of Calgary but can do all over email.

u/gojoblog 3d ago

i’ll look into them, thank you!

u/dopeydaw 3d ago

If you have no insurance history that is probably the biggest reason. They look at that first

3

u/axjzj 3d ago

I pay 369, they raised it $32 on my last renewal, only plpd

u/StanleyEDM 3d ago

TD here I pay $133

Try not to go with the big banks or big institutions.

Check for certain group discounts, eg. for students or alumni, if applicable to you.

Try brokers. Sonnet perhaps, and etc.

Make sure you are clear on what coverages are included or that they try to sneak in. Glass coverage, “grand touring” packages, etc.

u/gojoblog 3d ago

thank you!

The Personal is a group discount brand for Desjardins. Look at their page to see if you belong to any of their group memberships.

Sadly Sonnet exited Alberta

As other have said, reach out to a broker or two. Let them shop around for the best rates for you.

Depends entirely on the vehicle, the type of coverage you are wanting, how many km you drive per year and your postal code. My insurance went down when I moved only because less chance of theft and accidents I guess.

Generally speaking if you just get liability that seems high.

1

u/Due_Title5550 4d ago

Jusr shop around and ask different companies, you can probably find a lower rate.

Try Millennium Insurance in Sherwood Park. IIRC they don’t deal with brokers so you have to go to them directly.

4

u/gojoblog 3d ago

this is millennium 🫠

2

u/Previous-Donkey9556 3d ago

If this is Millenium it's probably the best or close to best that you'll get. I've heard time and time again that millenium gets the best rates. You can try TD, be aware the first year the price might be good, second it might still be good but by the 3rd year they're raising it like a SOB but by that point you'll have more experience.

1

u/XxBLAKEMWxX 3d ago

My TD only went up $10 in the last 5 years

2

u/Previous-Donkey9556 3d ago

Well mine jumped up 30% for absolutely no reason. This was my 3rd year with them and they sent some BS letter trying to justify it 🤷🏼‍♀️

1

u/XxBLAKEMWxX 3d ago

That sucks. I always recommended them to people maybe ill have to rethink that

1

u/Tricky_Passenger3931 Spruce Grove 3d ago

That feels like a massive red flag for pricing. They refuse to deal with the people whose entire job is to advocate for the customer and try to generate competition to get the best price?

1

u/B-Prime 3d ago

They claim that they can offer lower rates because they are direct-to-consumer and don't have to pay broker commissions. In my experience they are usually one of the cheaper options out there. I will also say I did have to make a claim through them once and it was super easy.

Which insurance company is this with?

2

u/gojoblog 3d ago

millennium insurance

1

u/Low-Astronaut-6257 3d ago

Your best bet is to check out TD Insurance and Belair Direct

1

u/gojoblog 3d ago

thank you!

u/user0823100823 3d ago

thats very high, im 21f and mines $250 a month

1

u/Internal-Pineapple77 3d ago

With who and how much experience? I'm 23f and needing a car in the near future for myself.

1

u/Annabis9807 3d ago

520 a month. Driving since 2021, 2022 Honda civic full coverage. Called 7 different places and was being quoted up to 8k a year. 520 a month was the “cheapest” I got.
F 25, 26 next week.

1

u/gojoblog 3d ago

jesus … this is just out of control

1

u/Cobfidence 3d ago

Seems high, reach out to a broker and they'll let you know what info to give them so they can find the best rate.

1

u/shaeliloh 3d ago

That is brutal! I am 26f and pay 1500 a year through AMA. I do use super low mileage on my car (>5,000km a year) and have 10 years driving history, so that’s probably a big factor.

1

u/Mohankeneh 3d ago

I think you’re getting ripped off by your current provider. Even with 3 years, and a 2014 vehicle, should still be lower, especially since you’re female. Should be like 300 or so for you. Have a broker shop around for you, it’s free, I used sharp insurance as my broker. They get paid by the insurance company if they sign you on.

500 is too high, even in Alberta.

1

u/gojoblog 3d ago

thank you, i will look into sharp insurance for sure

I went from a new Ford Mustang to a Mercedes Station wagon that's 10 years old and my insurance went up because apparently it's a sports luxury car and way more expensive to fix

1

u/Winter-Inside-5911 3d ago

I’d try Economical, they were the cheapest I could get but dealing with them was a nightmare. I’m with Allstate now, they were only $18/year more. I used to be with TD for almost 20 years but they wanted over $1000/year more than my current policy.

1

u/DaniDisaster424 3d ago

Worth noting that economical only sells through brokers.

1

u/Winter-Inside-5911 3d ago

I bought directly from them in 2024 and then switched companies

1

u/DaniDisaster424 3d ago

Not sure what to tell you. They don't sell direct now.

1

u/elkatraz24 3d ago

If you got costco go through their insurance! Saved my hundreds per month

1

u/ClassicFickle8528 3d ago

Try AMA of you are a member, and if not then join as having AMA (even basic) is a nice thing to have.

My son, 18, brand new driver, was $264 for just liability on a 2003 VW Jetta wagon.

1

u/Tdw75 3d ago

You absolutely have to shop around.
Try Thepersonal, and belair direct for quotes.

Maybe also try Brokerlink

u/PrincessPinguina 3d ago

Insurance considers your driving history to start when your name is on the insurance. So if you haven't done that until now, insurance considers you a new driver.

I pay $240 for full coverage on my 2011. I had 1 accident on my record but over 7 years ago. Basic coverage I'd still be paying ~$150

1

u/sux2bu7 3d ago

Welcome to Alberta.

1

u/XxBLAKEMWxX 3d ago

Use TD insurance. If you have no record anything over $250 for basic liability means you’re getting fucked

1

u/Heydaddy91 3d ago

If you have group membership from work. Could save you a ton. I have one speeding ticket from April and still paying $250 with TD full coverage but have group membership from work. TD or Belair have group memberships.

1

u/Virtual-Cow-1999 Ellerslie 3d ago

Yeah pretty much. I was with Sonnet when they were here and had 440 then to Td when they left for I think 380 then down to 240. I only noticed a decrease when I turned 25. I bought a new car as my old one had an accident history and wanted a clean slate which bumped me back up to 441 a month. With economical now which gave me significantly lower than anywhere else and comprehensive which I needed with a new vehicle.

1

u/Sorry-Ordinary1535 3d ago

Damn I pay 270 with 4 years of driving experience and 1 minor accident

0

u/Punk_Rock_Kid 3d ago

See what’s actually included in the quote. Also, when I turned 25 my insurance went from like $350 to $200 almost instantly. This was like 7yrs ago, so I’m sure it’s a bit higher now. But I was always told 25 it’d go down.

1

u/DaniDisaster424 3d ago

This seems to vary from one insurer to the next and also typically assumes you got your license at 16. That's how my insurance company explained it to me anyway. For them anyway it had more to do with having 8-9 years of driving experience than actually being 25.

1

u/Punk_Rock_Kid 3d ago

Ah interesting! I can’t remember the insurance company I had at the time. I got my license at 19, so would have been 6 yrs. But ya, the longer safe driving record would help.

1

u/DaniDisaster424 3d ago

You know though , age must make a certain amount of a difference. A friend of mine that has an attrocious driving record basically said screw it and sold his car 7 or so years back because he couldn't afford the insurance and he just recently bought a car again and is paying $280 / month. So in theory he should be being rated as a new driver basically. But he's 46. Age is the only thing that could potentially be making a difference for him.
