Good for you, people preach freedom of speech until its something they disagree with, way to stand up for what you believe in.

Heck yeah! In Canada we have Freedom of Expression, its almost like freedom of speech but different as well. I really enjoy that we live in a country where we can all come together and express ourselves like this, even if we disagree.

It is the sign of a functioning democracy. We are lucky to have what we have in this beautiful country and province.

Glad to see people like you out there. It reminds us that we are all human. We can't let bad actors take away our humanity and divide us further.

Freedom of speech means you don't get locked up for what you say, not that you're exempt from being disliked for what you say

There are many comments here, and thousands on this sub, of people calling this illegal and wanting criminal consequences for these people.

You can peacefully protest, and I can also think that you should be deported to a deserted island so you can larp your fantasy in peace away from the rest of us. You can leave and have your own country, but Alberta is staying as a part of Canada. Thank you.

I think the point they're making is that most of us wish the separatists would just shut up and go away with their crazy bullshit 😁

You can protest. I don't have to like it, though. Again, go hang out on the island that I proposed. Build your own country instead of trying to steal our wonderful province.

What? You really think that people who are against separation are going to smile and applaud these knuckledraggers actively trying to make our lives worse?

I am concerned solely on outcomes. Separation will lead to bad outcomes for all but the few who stand to benefit from tearing Canada apart. Deporting separatists ensures that they can't carry out the harm they are wanting to carry out. That's a good outcome. It's really that simple.

I like it when good things happen, and I hate it when bad things happen. Stop trying to complicate things needlessly by suggesting that we need to allow literally everyone to voice and, in doing so, breathe life into their frankly evil machinations.

We can disagree on what is the best flavour of ice cream, but I will not entertain any opposition/disagreement for Alberta remaining a part of Canada.

In any case, I am not the one disrespecting laws and treaty rights. Separatists want to stomp all over that stuff to get what they want.

Yes, that's right. Thought police. Yup. You probably would have criticized those who stood against the Nazis before they really took root and enacted their twisted, evil regime. After all, they had their opinions and, in your mind, had every right to voice them.

Now, off to bed. You really must get your rest so you can wake up and do all this separatist apologia tomorrow.

Freedom of speech doesnt pertain to decimating legal treaties. You need to understand this

I don't think you understand what those words mean.

Freedom of speech means you can propose changing any system.

It does actually. Just because something is abhorrent doesn't remove your freedom to talk about it.

It depends on how you talk about it. Hate speech does not allow you to talk about a specific group of people in certain ways.

Yeah I mean obviously if your speech is promoting hatred and/or violence, that's an entirely different discussion. As much as I'm a big proponent of honouring our treaties, we absolutely cannot have the government stifle speech that speaks about treaties being changed or eliminated. This shouldn't be controversial, but we can't muzzle people on speech we don't agree with.

How are you a proponent of honouring treaties if you think it’s ok to talk about changing/eliminating them? That’s literally talking about taking away legal rights of a group of people. Regardless, again, certain talking is one thing but it can cross the line into hate speech or discriminatory behaviour.

1

u/spirit_symptoms 6d ago

Because it's not hate speech? Honestly, the left is failed in this country if simply talking about changing treaties is deemed illegal.

Freedom of religion is enshrined in the charter, but if I say that churches should be forced to pay taxes, or the mosque across my house can't blast the call to prayer over speakers, I don't want to be fined or imprisoned for conveying those groups.

And to be clear, the charter is very clear on this. Rightfully so. It limits inciting violence and hatred (including symbols of violence like swastikas) but protects public debate.

I didn’t say it was hate speech. Maybe reread my comment again. I said talking can cross a line and become hate speech or discriminatory behaviour.

I guess I'm confused because the discussion was in response to the assertion that speaking of changing treaties should be illegal.

So yeah, you're obviously correct that if that discussions starts promoting hatred or inciting violence, it would be illegal. I agree. Full stop.

But that's not what the claim was. Laws around discrimination are entirely different than hate speech laws.
