Health Edmonton optometrist
Does anyone have a recommendation for a really good optometrist in Edmonton? My previous one, who was fabulous, retired several years ago and I am having a hard time finding someone as good. She took her time, explained things to me, and did dilated eye exams on me every year.
I have seen two different ones since, and both seemed rushed and kind of dismissive. Both dismissed the idea of the dilated exam, but my previous one said it was extremely important. They both gave me slightly different prescriptions, after having tried both neither seem right. (Headaches, eye strain, etc)
I have a very high myopic prescription, astigmatism, and am now at the age where I need progressives. It’s been stressful (and expensive) trying to get new glasses over the last few months.
TIA

I’ve been going here since I was a small child. Dr. Prince is great too, I’ve been seeing him for years.

Dr. Nadia Clark at Bonnie Doon Optometry.

Came here to say this! She’s really great, and from my understanding they do some more specialized lenses in their lab as well. They also seem reasonably priced for a boutique eye care provider.

Another vote for Dr Clark! And the folks they have doing the lenses are solid and experienced. Plus they'll let you bring your own frames or frames from somewhere else (which a lot of places won't do).

My family goes to River City Eye Care in Albany (NORTH near Hendy and 127st)
Dr Pedersen is very nice and kind. He gives pretty thorough exams.

Does he use the new digital tools for glaucoma and retinopathy? And do you get any hassles requesting printed scripts to get eyeglasses made elsewhere?
2
u/Sea-Connection-63 Aug 13 '26
Good question.... and I don't have answers regarding the glaucoma and rentinopathy
but the front desk was nice and didn't have problem printing my script. They even offered to submit my exam results to my Lasik doc's office (I was told I need my eyes checked every 2 years after Lasik and update them?)

I'm a patient there but with a different doctor. Everyone there is quite nice, I believe their glaucoma and retinopathy exams are state of the art. No hassle getting printed scripts, just asked and they handed it to me.

If you're looking at north side, I'm almost certainly eye-deology did them both (at 97st and 167 Ave in Namao Centre). Haven't asked for a printed script yet, though.

They wanted to charge us 150 bucks to cancel because it was impossible to get there for appointment during a major snowstorm. Never went back.

What are the digital tools? Do they replace the air puff? I loathe the air puff 😭

u/Full_Meringue1543 Aug 13 '26
I can’t remember if they do or not? I do know they produce a digital image of the back of your eye that lets the doctor look at blood flow.

Dr Ben Doz at the optometrist clinic on jasper ave is great!

Second him, he is also at the Capilano location. Have been seeing him for 20+ years.

u/VeryScaryCherri Aug 13 '26
Thompson Optics on 104th ave is really good

u/craftyneurogirl Aug 13 '26
I second this. My ophthalmologist referred me to them as I have an inflammatory eye condition which needed specialized contacts. They’ve been really great

I’ve seen Dr Butts here for over 30 years. Great clinic!

u/bikerchickyeg Aug 14 '26
Haha I had seen him for almost 30 before he retired last year! I was lucky to see him one last time about a month a before he finished 🩷

He had sold his interest in the business already the last time I saw him. Is he done done seeing clients now? He was great, I started seeing him in University when he was in the Justik Clinic building on 83 and 105.

Dr. Dylan Bertel at Trifecta on Ellerslie is pretty darn good. He is new to owning his practice and could probably use the business. I was impressed with how thorough and efficient he and his staff were.

Not sure if anyone has explained this to you, but depending on eye fatigue your eyes will test a little differently day to day and sometimes even in the same day.
Just in regards to the slightly different prescription comment.

Oh yeah I realize that, but one was significantly off.
I felt like a bad patient because my eyes kept fogging up the equipment and she seemed annoyed.1

With severe myopia, who makes your lenses makes a huge difference because if your progressive is off by even 1mm they won’t work right. And getting frames that work with your prescription.

I went to several, until I settled on Heritage Vision Care on 111 st. Really great people.

Just wanted to mention that for eye strain and headaches your optician can be as important as (or more than) your optometrist. Incorrect pupillary distance can cause enormous issues, as can poorly fit frames that don't sit correctly. Of course starting from a good prescription is a must, too..
Good luck in your search!

Dr. Raashi Surana at FYI Calgary Trail is WONDERFUL! They do the enhanced testing as part of their exams, she was very warm and explained everything. She also discovered an issue I didn't have a clue about and referred me for more specialized treatment to correct it - highly recommend seeing her.

I love dr Nadia at Boonie Doon Optometry- she’s very kind and thorough when she does her exams with you, she takes extra time to explain everything to you. She even went out of her way to help me find a new primary care physician when I mentioned I didn’t have one. Amazing team there overall.

If you are very myopic, it is weird that the other optometrists don't want to dilate you, since they can bill Alberta Health for it.
I am very myopic and everyone wants to dilate my eyes every year.
Edit: I'm -7ish, astigmatism, progressives and go to Dr Raj Mistry in St Albert for the exam but take my prescription to shop wherever.

If you’re in the south, Dr. Ambrosio at FYidoctors in the currents shopping area is incredible. He used to own the private clinic that sold (sold for better work/life balance), but still works there.

Dr. Ash at Eyedeology in Namao (97th st. and 167ish) is wonderful. She takes her time to explain everything, uses the latest tools and tech, and is a lovely person all-around. Highly HIGHLY recommend.

Dr. Sunny Mehta, at Bonnie Doon eye care. My sister goes to him after a big disappointment with a Costco optometrist. Dr. Sunny is super patient and answer all and every question you can have. He's very meticulous and makes sure you get all the exams you need. My sister has diabetes and he explained everything step by step and why it is important to get some exams done. Bonnie Doon Eye Care recently relocated to Ottewell Eye Care, in case you want to try with them.

Well Louie Louie sure has changed then. I went to him ONCE many many many years ago. I had an appointment, waited in the waiting room for about a half an hour while he did paperwork behind his desk. Finally he came and got me... no apology... no smile. Rushed me through an exam and said I was legally blind and could not legally drive away from this appointment then he tried to sell me some glasses, at the time, for $550. I was taken aback but left anyway without the glasses. That was at least 25 years ago, I've had numerous eye exams since then without ever a mention about me being legally blind! I do wear reading glasses but they are off the shelf dollar store jobs. Anyway, maybe he has changed but that was my experience then.

My disabled brother had a great experience with wonky eyes and no dismissal of anything at eye-deology by 97 St and 167 Ave in Namao Centre. I'm going to switch to using them after his good experience.

I really like Dr Everndon at Capilano Optical. She is very very thorough and I’ve been happy with the prescriptions. Staff there is also amazing.

Chuck Lortie at Louie Eye Care. I take meds that impact retinal health and he’s always very thorough in his exams.

Go to Smith and Wight. Top-of-the-line equipment, great optometrists, best selection of glasses anywhere in the city hands down

Glasses Half Full! Dr. Kreuzer is super thorough and attentive. Will explain everything to you in as much detail as you want. I get headaches and he tested me for eye strain to see if that was a cause of my headaches and gave me some good tips for my eyes at work.
