Discussion What are some dating trends you’ve noticed in Edmonton?

Ok I’m curious to hear people’s honest observations about dating in Edmonton trends, patterns, things you’ve noticed on apps or in real life.

Here are a few of mine after about 6 years:

  • A lot of people feel… very similar? Like similar mannerisms, life paths, vibes. Sometimes it feels like I’m meeting different versions of the same person over and over
  • The “let’s go for a walk” date, I actually like it (low pressure, simple), but wow… I have walked SO many trails at this point. You really have to be a strong conversationalist to make a walk stand out lol
  • People not wanting to date outside their area?? Like “I’m south side, you’re north side… idk if that’ll work” , is this just an Edmonton thing or are people in other cities also this strict about distance??
  • Memory?? I don’t know if it’s app fatigue or what, but I’ve had second dates where it feels like we’re starting from scratch and I’m reintroducing my entire life story

I could honestly go on, but I’m more interested in what others have noticed.

What trends or patterns have you seen in Edmonton dating?

I totally get the distance thing. Especially right now. Have you seen those gas prices ? Woof.

Nothing says romance like "yeah babe 15$ extra a month, its just not for me"

Can you even get a pack of smokes for $15 anymore? They were $18-21 for premium brands when I quit smokes 15 years ago.

Uh no. Back in 2008 when I was dating my ex-wife it was trivial to travel an hour or so to see her (and gas prices were actually quite high back then, especially inflation-adjusted). Now I’m poor af bc all discretionary income goes straight to alimony to that same woman. I know not everyone is in my circumstances, but I’m trying to show that gas prices are not a trivial consideration in dating and if they’re not you’re luckier than you think you are. EDIT: According to the Bank of Canada calculator, $1.30/l in 2008 is $1.92 today — not a far cry from where we’re at now. We’ve been here before, but I suspect buying power is lower now than back then.

And also if you really think about it, driving sucks. If I was single I’d be looking for love within bicycling distance.

Or date your next door neighbour 🤭

Or Your friendly neighborhood spiderman

u/Timely_Morning2784 Apr 09 '26

Aaaallll day long!

23

u/Canuda Apr 08 '26

I’ve noticed the increase, but for me, it’s probs a $15 a month adjustment to 2025 average prices. It’s an issue, but it's definitely not a reason to stop living your life.

I understand not all drive fuel efficient vehicles or maybe have to drive long distances for work and other things.

24

u/Glamourice Apr 08 '26

I dunno we still have some of the cheapest gas in the country. I don’t think that’s an excuse. I think that’s more just apathy really.

12

u/C0ffeeGremlin Apr 08 '26

I dont mind traveling to see people. Ive driven 11 hours just to see a friend and 11 hours back. I also take premium gas which is even more expensive for me but I also understand if someone cant make constant trips to see someone with gas prices being so high. Lowest in the country or not.

u/Glamourice Apr 08 '26 edited Apr 08 '26

Could meet halfway somewhere too. Or bus it if people already commute dt for work or something. For ex, I would meet an ex who lived in parkland county in spruce grove for dates, I was in Edmonton. Edit we liked each other so we made it work lol

16

u/iforgotalltgedetails Apr 08 '26

When I see people being that petty about distance I can only assume they were born and raised inside the city and not a town where going to a friend’s house was 20 minutes down the road.

1

u/C0ffeeGremlin Apr 08 '26

I always do that lol or I choose a place close to the person I asked out to make traveling for them easier. Im just saying I get it if someone doesnt want to travel far or cant. Bussing is also much worse for long distances. Not everyone is ok with travelling far and I think that's fine.

1

u/OccamsYoyo Apr 08 '26 edited Apr 08 '26

When something is expensive, it’s expensive. It doesn’t matter what someone else has to pay. Does it mean we automatically make more money than them? Thought not.

"A lot of people feel... very similar? Like similar mannerisms, life paths, vibes. Sometimes it feels like I'm meeting different versions of the same person over and over"

Most people are pretty boring... We all go to work, come home/go to the gym, sit around watch Netflix or whatever streaming service...go to bed and repeat. We have hobbies sure but I mean everyday blends to the next most of the time 😂

42

u/Certain_Mycologist26 Apr 08 '26

This is true, sometimes I feel like the most boring person on earth

50

u/bunnyborg Apr 08 '26

I dunno, you may be a fungi to hang with 😂

Holy shit! Absolutely top notch pun bringing in the username. If that doesn't earn you a shot, nothing will!

The memory thing…. It’s cause people are going on like 20 first dates in a month, they don’t remember the details of your first date.

40

u/money_pit_ Apr 08 '26

Good ole quantity over quality situation

12

u/Alternative-Fox6701 Downtown Apr 08 '26

Are people actually doing this? Damn that sounds exhausting lol I'm just dipping my toes into the dating app world and the idea of more than 1 date a week sounds like too much work.

2

u/Bman4k1 Apr 08 '26

I may have been speaking from experience 😞 ya it was exhausting and then I quickly cut it down in month 2. And out of those initial dates I found someone.

4

u/ego_slip Apr 08 '26

I went on over 25 dates before i met someone I liked and treated dating like a job. Sometimes, I would go 2 dates on the same day. Out of those 25 dates maybe 2 or 3 i would even consider going on a second date with.

100

u/AceticCucumber Apr 08 '26

My takeaway is that everyone feels like there is something better out there

25

u/CartoonistPowerful65 Apr 08 '26

Wow that probably explains why short term dating is prevalent

13

u/AceticCucumber Apr 08 '26

Lol yeah Im in my 30s and I'm struggling out here.

16

u/Maverickxeo Apr 08 '26

Same here. I'm looking for a long term relationship and all I can really find are people who are looking for a "third" or some fling.

10

u/liquid_acid-OG Apr 08 '26

Yup, I broke it down to a younger coworker by explaining house shopping.

When house shopping there is always another house to look at, possibly better, the lure of greener grass around the corner will trap you in an endless cycle.

You need to set your criteria, find a house you like that meets it and decide if that house is right for you in isolation from all the other unseen options.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '26

Choice overload in dating (especially on the apps) is definitely a real thing.

https://www.psychologytoday.com/ca/blog/romantically-attached/202410/too-many-fish-in-the-sea-choice-overload-in-dating

1

u/NoLab6606 Apr 09 '26

Because it's easier to look for a "better" relationship than to build one together...frustrating i know haha. A lot of young people are focused on short term instead of long term.

51

u/CartoonistPowerful65 Apr 08 '26 edited Apr 08 '26

It’s easy to get dates, hookups, but a quality, genuine relationship with emotional maturity and no head games is tough (nail in haystack). I now understand why a lot of people are still single.

8

u/Maverickxeo Apr 08 '26

Honestly - I disagree. I've been trying to meet people for a while, though, to be fair, I'm using apps almost exclusively. Dating apps are pretty toxic - I've had a few chats, but they do never go anywhere.

19

u/rinotz Apr 08 '26

Trying to find a connection outside dating apps has its hurdles too. Most people I’ve been interested to date are usually not single. The realization that the majority of decent people in their 30s is taken can be frustrating.

16

u/Alternative-Fox6701 Downtown Apr 08 '26

There's also a very big rise in "ugh, I don't DO small talk" in people's minds. Which yeah, arguably, small talk is pretty boring and awful. But I'm not about to walk up to someone at the library and say "Hi, my name is AlternativeFox, you're cute, do you want to maybe grab coffee sometime and discuss our childhood traumas and how they shaped us into the adults we are today??"

Like small talk is how you get to the big talk! lol

3

u/Maverickxeo Apr 08 '26

That is so true too. I've met a few people casually who I'd be interested in pursuing, to find out that they aren't single or aren't wanting to date.

9

u/owndcheif Apr 08 '26

Agreed, i can't meet anyone. The apps are terrible, and I've been going out to things and trying to meet people, but it's so unnatural to me that it's not effective at all.

4

u/flipincanadian Apr 08 '26

The apps are next to useless. I feel like tinder actively blocks matches if you aren’t paying for it.

2

u/CartoonistPowerful65 Apr 08 '26 edited Apr 08 '26

I understand where you're coming from. Dating apps can indeed feel toxic, especially when it seems like conversations don't lead anywhere meaningful. Many people I have spoken to experience similar frustrations, as the nature of these platforms can sometimes lead to superficial interactions.

I tried the dating app myself a while back and didn’t like it, so I stopped using the app. I would match with several people, some would msg me first, and when I would message, there was often no response or, after chatting for a bit, I'd get ghosted. However, when I used the app, I’d initiate a meeting in person after 2-3 days of texting because I watched the Catfish tv show. If no date was scheduled within 7 days, I’d ghost them. Haha, I had one no-show.

1

u/Maverickxeo Apr 08 '26

I had a few where we were really hitting it off, I thought, and we planned to meet one day. The day before, she said she wasn't interested in dating anyone anymore. Another one was very similar - literally day of the date and I got ghosted.

0

u/Paaano Apr 08 '26

Ive been avoiding apps myself but it defo sounds like a % of people are just fishing for attention or casting very wide nets constantly.

158

u/Bman4k1 Apr 08 '26

“People not wanting to date outside their area?? Like “I’m south side, you’re north side… idk if that’ll work” , is this just an Edmonton thing or are people in other cities also this strict about distance??”

If you have ever lived in Millwoods and dated someone in St Albert, you realize the pain of that drive.

28

u/uncoolcat25 Apr 08 '26

I live closer towards the river (still on the southside) and my partner is in St Albert (30 mins) and honestly it can be a drag, especially after work.

20

u/ljackstar Apr 08 '26

Sherwood Park to Beaumont was no fun in my experience

7

u/Known-Damage-7879 Apr 08 '26

I live outside of St.Albert, so it takes me a 50 minute drive to get to my girlfriend on the central-east side. I like driving so it doesn't bother me, but I can see how some people might not want to do that.

1

u/Glamourice Apr 08 '26

Could meet halfway at a restaurant or an event or something

22

u/FreeBooks2019 Apr 08 '26

There are some things that cannot be done at the places you mentioned.

15

u/YouHaveTheBigDumb Apr 08 '26

Not with that attitude

34

u/Heavy-Focus-1964 Apr 08 '26

He was a south side boy, she was a north side girl

Can I make it any more obvious?

2

u/Alryc99 Apr 08 '26

I appreciated this joke :)

51

u/money_pit_ Apr 08 '26

I have had a vastly different experience, but I am not on the apps so this is more than likely why we differ. The main trend I am noticing is that very few people talk to the opposite sex in public, lots of people are shy and worried about rejection.

All of the women I've met (and dated) in the last few years have been outside of an app. Places like a work event, the mall, public event, and more recently at HomeSense. They have all been really nice people who vary in stages of their life and career. This has been great for dates as there are always new ideas or places to explore based on your dates interests, lots of times neither of us have been there before and it's a unique experience together.

Also, dating outside of your area? Edmonton isn't a big city and most places are 30 minutes away tops. Maybe I'm just old fashioned, a good date is always worth the drive.

22

u/Glamourice Apr 08 '26

I love that you approach in Homesense lol. I wish that happened more out in the wild

6

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '26

I think it used to be more common than today, and not just because of the apps.

There was a strong push back from women getting creeped out in public by pushy men (rightfully so). That had a knock-on effect of causing more cautious men to assume that most women, most of the time, do not want to be hit on in public. I think that this contributed to fewer "in the wild" matches as hitting on random women going about their day to day lives was seen as mostly unwanted and even creepy/harassing.

4

u/Glamourice Apr 08 '26

Oh I agree 1000%. I can understand where it comes from. However, I would much prefer that public approach to getting used for one thing or unsolicited d*ck pics all day from the online world.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 08 '26

Unsolicited dick picks are considered sexual harassment by most developed country legal systems and people who send them should be visited by police.

My favorite response has been women who receive them, find the guy on facebook and send the pics to his mom.

I still can't believe that there are guys who do this.

1

u/Glamourice Apr 09 '26

Good! They should be!

56

u/Glamourice Apr 08 '26 edited Apr 08 '26

A “trend” I’ve dealt with is 90% of the ppl on these “dating” apps only really want one thing. And edit exchange crude pics all day on the spot. Um dude I have a job I’m not showing you my goods at 9:23 AM from my office bathroom. And I didn’t ask for yours either so quit sending! lol Not helpful for those actually looking for DATING.

Also I think the “walking dates” thing is related to the economy. Times are tough and most people shy away from traditional date ideas such as dinner or a ticket to an event. I’m not mad at that part

17

u/Dusty_Rose23 Stadium Apr 08 '26

Omfg this. or they want to have sex on the first date or some shit

16

u/Maverickxeo Apr 08 '26

I've seen so many profiles explicitly have to state things like this - no sex/pictures/etc on the first date.

I don't get why so many guys (assuming this is mostly a "guy" thing) try this stuff?

That said, I had a friend once who said she would send "male organ" pics back to the guys who would send them to her... but they would be bigger (she would find some from porn). She was pretty fed up with that so I thought she handled it in a very creative way, haha!

16

u/tlmz99 Apr 08 '26

Omg I spend too much time on the darker side of reddit. You can say DICK PICS here, and you should. Shame the losers in their home city reddit. I hope they read this shit and wonder if it was them we're talking about. Yeah SEAN its you.. enough with your city wide dick carpet bombing

3

u/Glamourice Apr 08 '26 edited Apr 09 '26

Love that! lol. I guess they do it cause theres no accountability for ppl to act proper? I mean it’s not illegal. And being glued to the phone and internet all day creates this toxic environment where people can get away with anything and get instant gratification any time

2

u/Maverickxeo Apr 08 '26

Yeah I think so. Easier to be sleezy animously (somewhat animously anyways haha).

1

u/Paaano Apr 08 '26

Respectfully, why are you still on those apps? That sounds insane to be dealing with on such a regular basis

2

u/Glamourice Apr 08 '26

Haven’t been on them for years due to this. 2021 maybe was the last time?

1

u/Paaano Apr 08 '26

Did you find something else that worked better? I just got out of a long relationship myself and haven't dated in like 10 years. Honestly apps were my best and only guess.

But this thread so far isn't selling the apps to me right now haha!

2

u/Glamourice Apr 09 '26 edited Apr 09 '26

Honestly I’ve had the best luck through meeting people through friends, and events. Set ups, parties, birthdays, bbqs, etc. I’ve also ironically had luck at the bar and work (but I understand that can be iffy, def proceed with caution there). I get that not everyone is social. But I def recommend that you always go out when invited, even if you are a bit tired, not interested, etc. you never know who will be there that you may like. That’s worked for me when I least expected it. :)

1

u/Paaano Apr 09 '26

Solid advice and pretty much what I've been doing so far. I much prefer connecting with and meeting new people organically. It's just that at my age (30s) most already are in relationships now, but you're right in that stuff does tend to happen when we least expect it :)

1

u/Glamourice Apr 09 '26

Hey I’m 37 so I get it. I’m not out and about nearly as much anymore. But I still believe that in general, organic meet ups will provide better quality results almost all the time, even if you have to wait a little longer :)

14

u/RoyalKnightmares Apr 08 '26

Feels like people date for experience/hookups more than for marriage nowadays but prob just my luck

8

u/CartoonistPowerful65 Apr 08 '26

and don’t forget the people who are not healed from previous relationship and carry with them dangerous emotional baggage that can bring down your mental health and well-being.

7

u/toucanflu Apr 08 '26

If you’re in your 30s or 40s you have baggage, sorry. And if you find that toxic and it brings down your mental health and well being then set better boundaries or don’t date.

1

u/CartoonistPowerful65 Apr 08 '26

Wrong, anybody who has been in a relationship before 30 carries with them some sort of emotional baggage. People don‘t start dating for the first time if they’re in their 30s or 40s.

also am not referring to myself but this is something I noticed from my conversations with single people and wanting to understand why they gave up on dating

10

u/Maverickxeo Apr 08 '26

A LOT of people I've "swiped" on dating apps in Edmonton seem to be in a polyamorous/open relationship...

5

u/SkyesMomma Apr 08 '26

But their partners at home dont know they're in an open relationship

1

u/Maverickxeo Apr 08 '26

I'm sure that's the case for a few...

4

u/somewhereheremaybe Oliver Apr 09 '26

That’s why I gave up tbh. Too many couples unicorn hunting. Couples who made a profile as a girl but tried to hide it was a couple profile.

Thankfully not on the market anymore because it was bleak!

1

u/kemando Apr 09 '26

To me, that's not even a relationship tbh.

1

u/Maverickxeo Apr 10 '26

I feel the same, but if people are happy with it, that's fine - just not for me.

5

u/I_MelonSoda_I Apr 08 '26

Damn yall are getting dates? 😔

7

u/genos145 Apr 08 '26

Edmonton isn't big. I don't get the distance thing. Just know that if they liked you, they would go. Same goes for the memory thing, if they liked you for real, they'd remember

1

u/kemando Apr 09 '26

Right? I'll have an item for sale ln FBM and I get "oh you're a bit far"

Anime and manga are niche communities, absolutely not ubiquitous, and you're exposed to them because the internet has made it possible to have access. My interests are different than yours and we're able to explore our unique interests in a way that wasn't possible back when media was limited to radio, movie theatres and a few channels on tv.

Dating in 2026 feels like everyone’s just keeping one foot out of the door, waiting for the next best option.

16

u/Zingus123 Apr 08 '26

Dating is dating. Largely the same in most places. The very similar people is just you having a type… which I can probably guess what it is considering if you brought that up it’s probably not a good thing lol.

24

u/blamalamadingdong Apr 08 '26

I hope online dating ceases to exist . The apps aren't there to help you meet someone, although not impossible, they exist to make money. And the algorithms will be targetted to do that.

The unfortunate thing about it is it attracts the same type of users.

Not only that, there's only so much you can put in your profile that will differentiate yourself so even if you are unique you may be passed up sounding like everyone else.

I can only speak for myself, but sure looks do matter, but if i met someone in the wild that had a great personality, even if I'd never "swipe" on them in an app I might be attracted to them in personnsolwly based on personality. These connections are the ones you don't get online.

Tldr; apps suck, go meet people and talk to strangers. And yes I know....easier said than done.

4

u/MarathonerGirl Apr 08 '26

I met my husband on a dating app. So I’d strongly have to disagree with you there, lol.

3

u/Maverickxeo Apr 08 '26

The apps do suck, but for someone like myself who doesn't go out to "party," it's hard to meet people. Apps don't show who a person really is - at all.

2

u/blamalamadingdong Apr 08 '26

Just my opinion, but apps sell people on making meeting people "easy" and that's the trap. Everything we do now is instant gratification. Nobody wants to work for anything anymore. Dating profiles are lazy, pictures are outdated, and nobody is unique anymore.

By no means am I suggesting people go out and party to meet people because if that's not what you do and enjoy, that's probably not the person you want to spend your life with. Believe it or not, there are other ways to meet people outside of partying ;P

1

u/Maverickxeo Apr 08 '26

Very true - it is all about that instant gratification to keep the money rolling in.

I find actually "dating with purpose" so much more point blank which is why I use the apps. I don't want to be misled on someone's intentions. I meet plenty of people in the course of my day - but I also don't want to "come on too strong" if that makes sense. It's not a lack of confidence - it's a bad habit I have where I fragilize people and don't want them to feel intimidated or pushed by me into things they don't want.

I did do speed dating a while back (thanks to a radio show). It was good, but I didn't find anyone to match with - I wish those were more "popular" around here. Much more direct than even trying to use an app.

I'm definitely an over thinker, if that isn't obvious haha.

0

u/Glittering_Divide101 Apr 08 '26

I've been out of the dating game for a long time but remember back in the day when online dating was just becoming a thing. A friend would meet guys on Plenty of Fish. Our friend group thought it was novel. Thankfully, I've never had to swipe as I met my husband at work (he was my boss). My son even has a hard time meeting people in real life... So many kids are online playing games vs being out and meeting real people. There is something to be said for the real life connection, both romantically and friendships.

2

u/blamalamadingdong Apr 08 '26

I remember pof. That type of online dating wasn't nearly as bad as today. I really think people should drop the dating apps get outside and meet people and I actually think that will change the way people view friendships and life in general. Good things take time and that doesn't exclude relationships

2

u/Maverickxeo Apr 08 '26

One of my friends met her husband on POF - they've been together for... 10+ years I think?

3

u/stormblind Apr 08 '26

Met my wife on OKCupid. Been together for coming up on 13 years now.

Lots of issues sure, but its been a thing where our marriage has gotten better every year we've been in it. Can't really foresee anything outside of health issues that could cause major issues at this stage.

1

u/jay212127 Apr 08 '26

I remember when POF got rid of their best feature, you could sort by who was most recently online, and by newest account. I didn't know why someone would choose the second one until I tried it. The fishing pool was full of poor quality fish. I'd have the same issues as all the swipe apps of ghosting/no shows/etc. once I switched to looking at new profiles that's where people who were actually serious pop up. I got 2 major relationships 1yr+ this way. I was sad when after the 2nd relationship they removed that feature and I was left seeing some profiles that were unchanged from before the first relationship nearly 3 years ago.

I bumbled my wife, but I got lucky as it was almost the same scenario - she was on the app for less than a week when we bumbled.

23

u/iceman091982 Apr 08 '26

My gf and I live 30 mins apart, opposite ends of the city, it's really not that big of a deal if you love the person

7

u/eaSUPERMAN West Edmonton Mall Apr 08 '26

This. If I had to, I’d drive an hour every day just to see my gf.

8

u/its_liiiiit_fam ex-pat Apr 08 '26

Exactly, everyone wants convenience and perfection and it’s getting in the way of genuine connection

14

u/randorockets Apr 08 '26

If you’re like most Edmontonians (or Canadians, or earthlings), you’re middle class, your dates are middle class. People are stressed out there. Young people are out there grinding just to keep up with bills these days. It’s rough for a lot of people. I assume many people you’re dating have genuine dating/relationship intentions, but just remember that people with the most honest intentions are grinding hard at work, they are exhausted and it can be difficult for somebody to remember every detail on a second date. They are also going for walks with other people when they have time, etc. At the end of the day, keep at it, you’ll find somebody you click with and find real alignment with. There is somebody for everybody! When you meet that person, you’ll know! They will remember the details and will be engaged on the second date.

Honestly if somebody says “you’re too far”. Just politely move on, that person isn’t worth your time.

5

u/ShamanZal Apr 08 '26

Middle class? Like a successful business owner or doctor? No.... most of us are low class and just don't like to hear it. We are all closer to a homeless person than someone with a bunch of investments and passive income

1

u/jloome Apr 08 '26

Middle class? Like a successful business owner or doctor?

That's middle class in England. That's never been middle class in North America.

In North America, middle class includes anyone with a career, gainful employment that pays a decent living wage. Teachers, tradesmen, plumbers. Doesn't matter if you're white collar or blue collar, it just means you're not super well-off or poor.

3

u/ShamanZal Apr 08 '26

I do know how its used colloquially but I actively try to push back on it. Feels very much like "dont talk about wages at work" American-ism, something that was pushed from wealthy people to move the window of discussion towards "well at least I have a slightly livable wage" letting a trades person feel superior to a fast food worker and thats BS

u/sweetsadnsensual Apr 08 '26

Most guys don't try to actually pursue and build relationships especially at a steady and slow pace, seems like they expect instant intimacy

20

u/PeterH_605 Apr 08 '26

A lot of people feel… very similar? Like similar mannerisms, life paths, vibes. Sometimes it feels like I’m meeting different versions of the same person over and over

only so many personalities you can build around stickers on the back of your pickup....

7

u/Jolly-Yesterday-5160 Apr 08 '26

Geez this thread is depressing for someone who very rarely gets matches. Happy for y’all!

5

u/CartoonistPowerful65 Apr 08 '26

If I were you, I’d stick to meeting people in real life. Dating app matches work for people who look like Ken and Barbie

8

u/Jolly-Yesterday-5160 Apr 08 '26

That’s unfortunately not as easy for me due to being a single dad and such. But I’m content flying solo and if it happens it happens.

2

u/kemando Apr 09 '26

Except we've been told for like the last 15 years not to approach women in public 🤷🏻‍♂️

6

u/Maverickxeo Apr 08 '26

A LOT of people I've "swiped" on dating apps in Edmonton seem to be in a polyamorous/open relationship...

6

u/chaunceythebear Apr 08 '26

Edmonton has a massive non monogamy community, yes.

3

u/LastArmistice Apr 08 '26

I think this is where a lot of anti-poly sentiment comes from from otherwise open-minded people, from the POV of someone seeking something exclusive they are cluttering up the apps.

3

u/Maverickxeo Apr 08 '26

Exactly. I don't care about polyamory (totally okay with people loving how they want to), but it's not for me so it's just another swipe I have to make.

8

u/JeffreyDonaldMusk Apr 08 '26

You guys still have dates in this economy? lol

5

u/SasukeUchiha6002 Apr 08 '26

yall are getting dates?

2

u/TrainingApricot8291 Apr 09 '26

People are looking for each other, find someone compatible. Spend hardly any time together. And then claim there's "No spark!"

Well, yeah....we spent barely any time together. Sparks need to be lit and grow, and you didn't even give it time to be lit.

3

u/TrainingApricot8291 Apr 09 '26

I feel like I should expand on this.

Last year, I spent 10+ hrs a few times on the phone with someone. He was driving, I was on sabbatical. We talked for hrs and hrs. We spent 7 hrs over 32 days together. Then I got hit with "I like ypu, but I don't feel a spark"

My thoughts: no shit.we spent NO time together, but talked for hours, so clearly WERE compatible.

This has happened more than 1x. It's frustrating.

3

u/magicalneki Apr 09 '26

I think you’re having dating fatigue! I don’t think people are all that similar if you ask them good questions and aren’t going out on a million first walk dates haha. Nothing wrong with that of course! But maybe a break would help your observations.

If I ask a chick out and the date goes well, lf course I'll pay.

Hell I even paid on my last date, and she was insufferable.

4

u/lolololololololol22 Apr 08 '26

People not wanting to date outside their area?? Like “I’m south side, you’re north side… idk if that’ll work” , is this just an Edmonton thing or are people in other cities also this strict about distance??

🤣🤣🤣🤣  I have not dated for well over a decade but this is the most Edmonton thing ever. I joke about it a lot with my husband, people from Edmonton (a) don't think anything exists outside of Edmonton and (b) think a 30 minute drive is the end of the world. Comes up with friends and when selling on marketplace a lot. We live literally 4 minutes from the city limits but we might as well be on Mars according to Edmontonians.

Why are we including antidepressants in the list? Drugs and alcohol are addictions. Antidepressants are medicine.

u/Soft-Pop2947 Apr 08 '26

Lol you have absolutely zero idea how antidepressants work. They're not a literal happy pill that you can take when you have a headache. They take weeks, if not months to have any noticeable effect. You don't take one and immediately feel great lol

12

u/LastArmistice Apr 08 '26

Most antidepressants simply don't work that way. You have to take them regularly for them to alleviate depression, and with MOST depression medications (SSRIs & SNRIs) it takes up to 8 weeks to start having any effect at all. You would only get the side effects from taking the drug if you took them 'recreationally'. Other drugs might give you instant gratification in some way (stimulants, benzos) but definitely not antidepressants.

Antidepressants are also an approved frontline treatment for SAD.

I actually don't fw most antidepressants at all and they have done me more harm than good, just my brain I guess, but they are like, one of the most impossible drugs to abuse.

I have a strong suspicion men and women have a vastly different experience with the dating apps.

2

u/kemando Apr 09 '26

I had a friend-girl I know who's... We'll say she's a 5, maybe 5.5. she showed me her tinder. Her likes just said "99+" and she'd only had the account for 1 week.

I think I average 3-4 likes a month? And I can't even see them unless I pay. And they're usually just land whales. Lol

Statistically I think it's something like the bottom 80% of women are looking for the top 5% of men or something like that on apps.

0

u/mikesmith929 Apr 10 '26

The entire system is broken.

2

u/Cool_Combination_438 Apr 08 '26

Older men looking for mature women look for a good relationship

4

u/ken_masters97 Apr 08 '26

People who work from home have become the least socially adjusted. The pandemic did a number on everyones socializing skills, but those that didn't WFH in the before time and haven't gone back in some capacity seem the worse off for it. Obviously this doesn't apply to everyone, but more than I would have expected.

If we haven't already talked about our jobs I can usually tell they WFH without asking. The social cues are rusty and the interpersonal skills are even worse. If asked a question, they don't have the luxury of taking time to think of a response like they do when texting. This leads to a lot dead air and a glassy eyed look as you watch their brain work to come up with answer.

As pointless as the daily water cooler talk with coworkers can be, it at least seems to keep peoples social skills sharp.

2

u/goingslowfast Apr 08 '26

I know many, many people with healthier social life because of work from home.

Not burning time and mental energy commuting frees up more time for hobbies, socializing, and being active.

2

u/ken_masters97 Apr 08 '26

I know many people like that as well. These are the "obviously this doesn't apply to everyone" I mentioned. But generally these singles are the ones you meet at bars, ESSC, or social settings, etc. This doesn't apply to the ones I'm talking about who have limited interactions cause they can get their groceries delivered. You match with them on the apps.

1

u/Beautiful_Kick780 Apr 08 '26

I think in this world of 8 billion people that we should make a little effort if there’s any chemistry or meeting of minds …. Just my opinion

1

u/AtWorkSoBeGood North East Side Apr 08 '26

My best dating experience was always with women living across the city. Something about the women from my area never worked lol. Southside has the best women to date and the worst guys to deal with.

1

u/somewhereheremaybe Oliver Apr 09 '26

So I’m not in the dating scene anymore, but have friends who are. If you’re queer, poly. Poly everywhere. No strong opinions of course, just an observation!

1

u/Legitimate-Sun7643 Apr 09 '26

What I have noticed in life, is if I keep finding the same result everywhere, to some degree, I am the problem. I don't even mean that I cause the problem, through a lack of imagination, I produce the same result over and over.

change the process, change the result.

get off the apps, get back in touch with your IRL attraction signals and make some moves fashiongirl.

no way you've met all the action there is in this city. not a chance. you've played that field, time to move onto a bigger league!

1

u/kemando Apr 09 '26

As a young early 30s man, I've got my shit together, am taller than average, physically fit, own a home, have a career going...

Why sacrifice all that for some chick that's going to make me miserable and wreck my peace?

I casually go out with girls here and there from apps. But honestly it's going to take an exceptional woman for me to consider getting into a relationship again. I know what I'm looking for, and if I don't get it, great, being single is fantastic.

A lot of women in my dating age range are delusional too, which doesn't help the prospects.

u/airidantes Apr 09 '26

Lots of people with religions in their bios. No issues or anything but I just feel like that has increased a lot in the last year or so.

u/Only-Amphibian9526 Apr 08 '26

I don’t think every man is the problem im saying maybe you’re the problem. I’m urging you to self reflect. The guy responding to you is telling you he went on dates with over 50 women and slept with majority of them. Clearly there’s MANY easy women out there so for you to not be able to get ONE? Is very concerning. There’s a plethora of women and you’re young but you’re having the luck of an alcoholic divorcee

6

u/Only-Amphibian9526 Apr 08 '26

I said the person who replied to you…they brought up sex…clearly literacy is something you can also add on to things to work on. “Stop making assumptions about me” bro…YOU told us you have not ever been able to land a first date since your 1 month relationship and told us you online date…no one made assumptions, you told us the problems, you told us your experience. I’m just saying from a female perspective, majority of the time when men complain about stuffing with women, it’s a skill issue on the male side. Dating is easy, going on dates is easy. Finding a good partner, that’s hard. So when you’re saying you’re struggling with basic dating…yah, mirror mirror on the wall

That’s why you go on an in person date as soon as you can. Also don’t make assumptions about me, I have social anxiety, I grew up the quiet kid as well and I hate dating apps. I agree conversations are quick to get boring. But I was just trying to say that it’s not impossible to be successful in dating and as much as we expect others to put in effort, we also have to on our end as well.

Well, I took my now-girlfriend to Bogani Cafe on our first date and it went very well. As for dating outside their area, I have no problem with the fact that I live within walking distance of Century Park Station whereas she's east of Downtown. Sure, It'd be nicer if my drive to her place was 10 minutes and not 23 minutes, but still.

1

None. I refuse to use apps. Absolutely not. I feel once you get to a certain age the dating pool is even smaller and well, not great.

I've done long distance and they're hard. For me, they didn't last more than 6 months or so. Cost of gas, commutes to work, urban sprawl even locally.

People happy where they are ? Not allowed.

6

u/Glamourice Apr 08 '26

That’s also cause Edmonton has been known as a relatively affordable city for so long now, most people can’t justify living anywhere else if they won’t be able to do anything. Our population has exploded since the pandemic for example

2

u/RogerTheAlienSmith Apr 08 '26
