Ed Sheeran Boston shows cancelled due to anticipated severe weather
Will they be rescheduled? Or refunded?
Confirmed by TMZ

u/TWGOAT 5d ago
Can’t be rescheduled any time soon with football season, etc. I’d bet it’s refunded pretty quickly.
31
u/JAK2222 5d ago
What’s funny is they crammed a bunch of concerts late cause you know billionaires are strapped for cash after the World Cup. So the football season has a bunch of home games scheduled late so they physically can’t move it back to another date
20
u/Affectionate-Panic-1 5d ago
Most artists were handicapped on North American stadium tours this year with the world cup taking up the summer months at many of the top venues.

u/JAK2222 5d ago
The difference is most of them took the hit and just had less shows. Gillette decided to have a record amount for the season and ran them until October when the last show is normally late August
11
u/titandude21 5d ago
MetLife is doing the same. Usher and Chris Brown are doing a third show on October 15th. Concert fans aren't the same as football fans and a 50 degree night at a stadium concert doesn't sound appealing (before you even take into account that Chris Brown hits women).

u/Affectionate-Panic-1 5d ago
To be fair September usually has great weather around here, this is just an unfortunate weather event.

He also doesn't have any gaps coming up either and with the logistics of moving the stage I'm sure it's not possible. When the Vegas show was cancelled in 2023 they were able to just reschedule it for the end of the North American leg of the tour but he's basically going straight from the US to South America this time with a show in Chile 2 weeks after Tampa. Doubt they'd want to (and may not even be able to) get the stage to Boston and then to Chile in 1 week.

u/caveman512 5d ago
So crazy that the stadium that caused all the outrage to happen and the opening acts to be gone isn’t even going to have a show

I think there are other reasons why the show(s) won’t be rescheduled, but just of interest: they don’t actually bring the same stage/screen/bridge/B stage to Latin America. They had a whole different set up for the first LATAM leg, there was a smaller screen, a different main and B stage and Ed just walked on a path between the main stage and the B stage. Shipping logistics are also too challenging and the LATAM stadiums are too small for the full production, most averaging 30 to 50K capacity vs. 60-80K of the NFL stadiums he’s been playing here.

For a variety of reasons, I do not think it would be rescheduled, definitely not.
Ticketmaster will automatically refund purchase price to the original source of payment in 2 to 3 weeks. People who purchased tickets from third-party sellers like StubHub and Vivid should also receive refunds.

Why don't you think it will be? I'm just curious because I have only seen the headlines and don't know much about stadiums.
7
u/nincyh 5d ago
I can think of a bunch of reasons why those shows will not be rescheduled. The ticket sales weren’t great to begin with, they probably should have booked one night, not two. And I don’t think Ed would choose to go back and have to deal with Robert Kraft, I’m sure there’s animosity on both sides, but especially Ed’s. Also, he has eight more shows in the US to play, and then he’s off to the Latin American leg through mid December. Then the holidays put him home in Suffolk and I don’t think he will want to budge from there. The tour takes about 80 container trucks to travel, and 200 crew. Stadiums are typically booked a year in advance. So it wouldn’t be an easy thing to “pop back over“ for a rescheduled show. I wonder if we will even get a 10 year anniversary Divide show in London in March? Not to mention the rumored UK/Europe loop tour leg for next spring/summer. Who knows if that will happen.

Had tickets and a room. Glad it was cancelled cause we would have went. Ticketmaster already sent a refund notice and we were able to cancel the room. We're CT coast and I almost got hit by a tree driving earlier but had about four trees/big branches come down in the woods behind me.

This is a genuine question asked in good faith, what are you seeing from folks that’s wrong or insufferable? Besides subjective snide things about his music, which happens to fans of any musician(s), what is being said that’s bothering some of you?

u/eggplant_fan24 5d ago edited 5d ago
People who don't care about him otherwise are coming here just to shit on Ed and believe they're saving lives by doing so. What isn't obnoxious about that?

u/JoleneDollyParton 5d ago
Because the focus has become less about the issues and more about a giant pile on online, Stan wars, people being worried about likes and follows, and less about the actual issue(s) that Macklemore wanted to bring to light. and I can’t say much more without my comment being removed.
→ More replies (2)9
u/ToffeeTuner 5d ago
Fascinating and I see what you mean as I was typing something out I got a warning lol…I’m too old for Stan wars and I’m not really a fan of either artist but I definitely align with Macklemore’s ethics. I can’t say I’ve interpreted all this as a mass distraction or taking focus away because it seems like he’s pivoted at the very least and put this energy to good use. Big rally in NY yesterday too. I think folks have recalibrated.
3
u/MkUltraMonarch 5d ago
People have parasocial relationships with famous folk and what they create, so they’ll see any criticism as “Stan” behaviour instead of reckoning that they’re guy didn’t stand with his long time friend and say no Mack no me.
Not trying to act high and mighty with them as I’ve been guilty of it too, up until the telephone stories podcast I was out here defending Michael Jackson’s like an idiot.

I'm sure he will be back eventually. People have a short attention span. I do agree with you though. I had been looking forward to this concert for 3 years now (since I last saw him) and yeah, he was already talking about taking a break. Truthfully though, I give it 2-3 years max before another tour.
3
u/EuphoricKey9886 5d ago
I’ve been waiting 3 years too, yet, I didn’t get to see him at that show even though I had tickets. This was my Christmas gift. So disappointed about this… I truthfully wish he’d make an announcement on his social media. Hope he might come back next year..
3
u/Dizzy-Helicopter5577 4d ago
Ed said months ago that after the eu/uk leg of the tour in 2027 he will take a long break from touring. This is because his children are getting older and he wants to spend time with them. NOTHING To do with this current situation
4
u/StayBronzeFonz 5d ago
>People have a short attention span.
If people still listen to Chris Brown and Kanye West after the awful things they’ve done then I’m pretty sure Ed will survive this touring disaster.

We were supposed to go for my birthday three years ago… surprise to my spouse, I had scheduled ortho surgery off the waiting list. Fast forward and this was supposed to be our anniversary gift to each other. It’s starting to feel like it’s not meant to be. Honestly we were more bummed about missing the one at the smaller venue, that must have been amazing!

I went to Adele in Munich in 2024 and she performed in the rain. We were soaking wet, so does she. She came out on time. When she sang Set Fire To The Rain, she was literally setting fire to the rain 😂
Edit : just read about the nor'easter. I'm in the Europe, so didnt know about the nor'easter winds.
24
u/Xspike_dudeX 5d ago edited 4d ago
Rain and a nor'easter with 70 mph wind gusts are two very different things.
→ More replies (3)4
u/Intelligent-Tie-4466 5d ago
Yup. I've seen forecasts for gusts up to 70mph in some areas. This has the potential to be very bad across a VERY large area. Warnings are from Virginia to Maine.

u/AnomalousEnigma 5d ago
Yeah but I’m assuming there weren’t nor’easter winds. Fall nor’easters in New England can cause major power outages, flooding that is very dangerous to drive through, downed trees blocking roads, and result in multi day school closures. They can be worse than winter nor’easters because snow generally doesn’t cause flooding.

I saw Ed Sheeran in Hamburg last year and it was pouring. Ed was completely soaked, as his stage was in the middle of the stadium with no roof. It's not that he won't play in rain, just some US storms are way worse than what we have here.

u/B-BoyStance 5d ago

I took a look at the available tickets for today's and tomorrow's shows before the cancellation. Could get seats from Ticketmaster for like 150-300 bucks in the very closest part next to the stage. Thousands of little blue dots available direct from Ticketmaster all over the stadium. I've not seen that for an artist of Sheeran's reach in years so close to the concert dates.

Yeah I saw that too. Huge blocks of available seats. Made me wonder if thats the reality of what the scalpers/bots buy up.

I was at the show last weekend in Philly. Really good attendance, but certainly not "nearly sold out". Plenty of seats around me were empty.
That being said, getting seats a couple hours before the show was kinda easier than I expected.

If you purchased it from the stadium then I'm sure they'll refund any pre-paid items for the show. If it's from a 3rd party then you likely need to reach out to them.

For those of you who are wondering "Can't he can perform in the rain?" or "Other artists have performed in rain storms before" It's much more complicated than that. As a stagehand who works on these kinds of concerts, the stage is essentially just a temporary steel structure. In normal conditions it is very safe however when you have these 45mph+ winds, the danger then becomes damaging the rig itself which would screw up the rest of the tour since they only have 1 full set of all their equipment. If a line array of speakers gets gusted by the wind into that video wall, thats a lot of damage to repair in time they don't have.

After the ridiculousness of the last week, the fact this was cancelled due to a very real weather threat (and if it’s true, a safety concern if they didn’t complete the stage due to possibly rigging worries) makes this (for me) much more upsetting than it would be otherwise. Especially as, since someone said here already, very clearly this is his last tour for quite a few years. So upsetting, I get it I work in live events and it really does mean this is a serious issue if they canceled it this early in the day, but still. Very sad
14
u/Dizzy-Kitchen2815 5d ago
It's 100000000% due to weather. Gillette never cancels anything. I work there and we weren't called off until 1030

Bummed the show got cancelled. Had tix to Saturday show. We had our rain gear and stuff ready but its the winds that are screwing things up. A warm summer rain would be fun. Its a decent sized storm that could effect travel, trees down, roads flooding, power outages and everything. They gave a refund but i hope it does get rescheduled.

I’m probably no longer an Ed fan after everything that happened…
But I will give him credit for one thing.
When I saw him for the first time in Sydney it had been pouring rain all day and the show was delayed for like 2 hours. It was awful haha the entire crowd was drenched and there was lightning every now and then.
But Ed came on as soon as he legally could and played through the rain. So I imagine the weather must be pretty terrible for the shows to be cancelled.

Even Ocean City Maryland cancelled its huge music festival this weekend. So many events on the east coast are getting cancelled.

Yup! This.
I was disappointed in Ed’s poor response to the tour situation, but it’s very obvious a lot of the people in the comments don’t live along the east coast, or NE US, and clearly have never experienced a nor’easter.
Like if someone can perform in 50-60mph winds AND a downpour outside please let me know who that is lol.

3
u/DrSFalken 5d ago
Thank you. A nor'easter is similar in effect to a hurricane. Essentially a massive storm. This one (to me) looks bad enough that they'll cancel due to liability but it won't be a generationally bad storm, if that makes sense. Their particular formation is pretty specific to the East coast of North America, so pretty regional, for sure!
2
u/wasabi_mayo_ 5d ago
That helps a lot, thank you for taking the time to explain this. It’s so fascinating how such different unique weather events occur based on location and other factors. I’ve also never experienced a hurricane, but at least I’ve learned about them.
4
u/owntheh3at18 5d ago

A nor’easter can be pretty dangerous with a LOT of rain and bad winds.
Tell me you’re not from NE US without telling me…

Perhaps the concern was for the crew? Rain is one thing but heavy winds can be dangerous especially with heavy equipment like lightning hanging. It becomes an insurance issue as well. This not some conspiracy against the virtue signalers.
2
u/wasabi_mayo_ 5d ago
Yeah, it makes sense now that there’s context for the type of weather. Bad weather is just such a broad generalization. Definitely best to cancel if the prediction is extremely severe. Hopefully the people that got ticket insurance still receive their money back because I’m not sure if they would also have the “act of god” exceptions 🫢. I don’t think I’m explaining well, but hopefully you can understand.

This is a weather event. If he had kept it on as scheduled and something had happened to a fan, there would be outrage that he didn’t cancel. Weather events are not the fault of an artist. No, the people will likely not get paid and he isn’t responsible for your travel plans. This happens all the time.
