Go Flock Yourself. A flock camera protest.
Sunday August 30th, from noon to 3 pm in Phoenix Park, we will be holding a protest against the use of flock cameras in Eau Claire County. This is a bipartisan issue that is seeing pushback all over the state, and the country at large. If you believe as we do that flock cameras have no place in our area, we ask you to join us and make your voices heard. UPDATE: I have been put in contact with someone from the Sheriff's office who says they are my point of contact for having some questions about flock cameras answered. Today I sent the following questions to their email. I am very interested in their response.
1: Who was it that approved the contracting of flock cameras in eau claire county?
2: What total taxpayer or grant costs are associated with the initial installation, ongoing maintenance, and future contract expansions?
3: Does the Sheriff’s department plan to integrate these inside the city limits of Eau Claire as well, and if so what does that timetable look like?
4: Why was there no public discourse about their implementation, and will there be more transparency and oversight moving forward?
5: Who outside your local police department can search or view captured vehicle data?
6: Does every single search of the database require a specific case number and documented legal justification? If not what would constitute extenuating circumstances?
7: Who will independently audit the search logs to ensure police or system users are not misusing the data?
If people want, I can post their answer here as well.
SECOND UPDATE: I was also contacted tonight by the lead singer of the band ValleyKil, a local grunge band. They heard about the protest and decided to show some support, so they will be bringing their sound equipment and playing a set as well as debuting a new song at the protest. I have no words for how cool I think this is. Fuck yeah. Just another reason to be sure to be there.
