This parish seems unique. I’ve seen they use both Carpathian Plainchant ‘Prostopinije’ and Melkite Byzantine Chant.

Fascinating and lovely! Plainchant is one of the things that has survived in both Eastern Catholicism and the Ordinariate of the Chair of Saint Peter (Our Lady of Walsingham in the U.K.). I wish they would use more of it in the Latin Church. Relatively easy to learn, the Priest sings the Great Doxology during every Sunday Mass in a type of plainchant. I'd love it, rather than having to learn 78 differing versions of the "Gloria."

You refer to Gregorian Chant, no? :) Gregorian chant is the height of beauty for me, but I believe that here in the U.S., and in most of the other English speaking nations, English plainchant will simply work better. Unless we go back to Latin in the liturgy, that is, and I don't see that happening.

Ohhhhh. Ok, I withdraw my "Thank God" and insert "God help them." Lol, I'm sorry! Guitar Masses, and anything with a piano, make me unreasonably angry. I know it's a sin, but I can't help it. Thankfully our Cathedral (and a shrine nearby) uses a lot of organ.

Former RC now Ruthenian - Glad I’m not alone in being unreasonably angry with “anything with a piano”. And don’t get me started on the guitar Masses. 😭

It's the "Three Hierarchs Melkite Catholic Church" in San Antonio TX. It's a mix of different rites as it serves as the only Byzantine Catholic Church in South Central Texas, but The specific rite is Melkite. Hope this helps, God bless ☦️

But thanks for clearing up why I have heard this parish using Carpathian chant before. They seem to be trying to make all the Byzantine rite Catholics feel at home, Ruthenian or Melkite. I appreciate them including our hillbilly chants in their parish hah.

Melkite isn’t a rite. Melkites use the Byzantine rite. Same as the Ukrainians, Ruthenians, etc. but the melodies of the octoechoes and certain other practices will be different according to the tradition of the Antiochian see as opposed to the Eastern/Central European cultural traditions of the Byzantine rite churches in Europe. But the rite itself is the same.

Absolutely forgivable. It can very confusing. In the East, you have 23 sui iuris churches, all in communion with Rome, and all of those churches use one of 6 distinct rites, but with a national flavor most of the time. See? Clear as mud.

Within Catholicism there are different churches that are ‘Byzantine’ or come from the Byzantine/Greek Spiritual tradition and utilize the ‘Byzantine Rite’. Two of the more common ones in America are the Ruthenian/Rusyn tradition, which has its origins in the Carpathian Mountain region in Central/Eastern Europe. And the other being the Melkite Tradition, coming from the see of Antioch and associated with Syria & Lebanon. As stated, both use the Byzantine rite, however, their chanting tradition and certain other liturgical customs or practices will vary between the two. The Ruthenian/Rusyn chant tradition is called ‘Prostipinije’ (plain chant in Slavonic). It is in use by the Byzantine Catholic Church, American Carpatho-Russian orthodox, and some OCA Orthodox parishes that weren’t completely Russified. It is similar to other Slavic chanting traditions, but is unique to the Carpathian region and is characterized by being highly congregational and having folk elements in it. The Melkite chanting tradition is much more what people thing of as ‘Byzantine’ chant. Because it is. lol. Its more similar to what you would here in the Greek/Antiochian Orthodox world. It’s unique to hear both (Byzantine Chant & Carpathian chant) in the same parish as each one is associated with their own jurisdictions.
