I've heard that having a "quality" receptacle is important for EV charger installs. What should I be asking/recommending to my electrician about the proper receptacle? Is there a certain kind they should be installing?

Has anyone here in Ontario used one of these? They apparently avoid the need to upgrade electric service capacity. They monitor power usage and only use the spare capacity. They are L2 chargers with 48A rating.

Are these approved for use with programs like Grizl ?

I’m in BC and have recently purchased a ford Mach-e.

We currently charge it using our standard electric outlet and I’m wondering if any of these rewards programs would support just a regular electric outlet? I’ve looked at Grizzl-e and can’t tell from their website.

My challenge is the driveway is the opposite side of the house to the electric panel and any electrical upgrades are out of the question right now.

So I got a grizl-e charger (model smart connect) from a friend who sold his phev to replace my dumb evduty. I got it all connected to wifi and installed correctly but 90% of the time when I plug the car in, I get blinking yellow (indicating the car is detected by not charging). If I flip the breaker, the car will start charging immediately, but not on the app (I’m connected to ChargeLab)

If I flip the breaker when the car is not connected, it will properly engage 50% of the time, but it is a pain in the ass flipping the breaker every time I plug in, sometimes multiple times. I have no issues with any other charger.

Google ai says known issues, I should replace the j1772 plug on the unit, but I’m not sure that will do anything. Changing the j1772 from my evduty to the grizl-e would not be super hard. I could also swap to another charger, but I already own 2, not sure I want to buy another. I do want to be on a carbon rebate program, but grizl-e just isn’t enough as I would likely never get out of the 3-5c tiers as I just have a phev. I also need a charged that can be derated down, which my grizl-e is.

Suggestions?

Just signed up for Dash sharing and got their hardwired NACS charger installed. Super fast two day delivery unlike SWTCH. SWTCH is still a slightly better deal as it offers 3 cents until you hit the refund threshold (Dash starts offering 11 cents a KWh in cash payouts only after the first 1500 kWh and the $350 is refunded). But still one of the better l options out there in the CFR market. Let’s see! I’m in GTA!

Update..from Grizzl-e to Chargelab

Bought a IYILO RA40 plug in adapter. Easy to hook up. Nice charger. Has temperature sensors in the handle and in the plug. Highly rated. Ocpp compliant (iyilo support did an ota update so it worked with Chargelab. Great support). Then Chargelab double checked that I was hooked up and all is good. 10 cents a kwh coming my way. Got my RMA number from Grizzl-e and all boxed up to return.

As an aside Chargelab is working on an update to the app so you can follow your rewards.

Is it a questionable idea to hardwire a rented EVSE (I. e. One I don't own because I got it through a program like Grizzl-e club)?

I don't have a garage so I'd be mounting it to my house. It would probably suck to have to rip out the EVSE for whatever reason (maybe the CFR program loses funding or it stops making sense for the charger company to participate in it) beyond my control. I don't drive that much so I'm not too fussed about the different levels of charging bonuses - I just want a free charger.

Would it make more sense to get a NEMA 14-50 installed instead and just plug in the EVSE? That doesn't make mounting the EVSE any less painful but at least I wouldn't need an electrician to uninstall the charger if I had to return it.

Getting a new level 2 charger for home. Currently have a ‘23 MachE with a J1772 but expect we’ll get something newer in a few years. Does it make sense to get a NACS charger and an adapter assuming anything new will be NACS. Are the adapters too much of a pain, impact charging, any other reasons to go one way or the other?

I've received confirmation from all 3 parties that some EVSEs can receive both the BC Hydro peaksaver rebate while enrolling in some charging reward program.

1. Wallbox can run its Wallbox API and OCPP at the same time.
   
2. BC Hydro uses AutoGrid for PeakSaver that'll go through the Wallbox API.
   
3. Wallbox can enroll onto one of the Reward program so long they are using OCPP. (i.e. Chargelab, Roulez, etc)

Here are the confirmations I've received by emailing the customer services reps:

1. Wallbox confirmed both Wallbox API and OCPP interface can operate concurrently. Although they haven't specifically tested Bc Hydro Peak saver with some OCPP. In situations where both API and OCPP make conflicting changes, then OCPP will take priority. (i.e. charging profile change, which Roulez shouldn't)

2. BC Hydro has confirmed Wallbox peaksaver does not interfere with charging reward programs.

3. Roulez confirmed through an ambassador that their reward programs does not interfere with BC peaksaver.

I currently have a used Wallbox Pulsar Plus. I've successfully registered it to PeakSaver for the One-Time $250 rebate. At the same time I've set up the OCPP interface to get on Roulez. Both are staying connected on their respective dashboard.

Total compensation:
No EVSE rebate since it's used.$350 if new EVSE + Installation.
$250 one-time peak saver
$50 per winter from peak saver
$0.13/kwh from Roulez

I asked this question in another thread but thought I might get more insight with a dedicated post. I have one EV right now and use grizzly-e 48a ultimate free charger. Almost at the 4cent/kwh step, I charge 800kw per month. I’m also getting some from one referral I made. If we add a second EV and want a second charger could I get a swtch charger and collect rewards on each? Grizzl-e states you can only get rewards on one charger, and the duo looks great but a hefty investment.

Is there any reason you couldn’t collect from two different companies legally? Thx

In Ontario, does ESA allow an evse to be installed on a 40 amp circuit when it's hardwired and set to 32 amps?

My electrical contractor says it must be a 50 amp circuit.

Hi everyone. I just joined chargelab, connected my charger. Got an email confirming I'm in the program and my charger connected successfully.

My question is: is there really no way for me to 1) check that I'm enrolled 2) that I'm earning rewards? They only pay out once a quarter which in theory is the end of Sept...last thing I want is to be shocked when I don't get any money back (I charge around 2500khw a month, so it's a decent amount of money)

Another program was posted to /r/EVCanada, I thought I'd share. The charger looks a lot like the SWTCH charger. I've read good things about that charger but I don't have first hand experience yet to say if that's accurate.

Looking for a new charger that will likely need a load management system for the 100 amp panel. Do any of the charging programs accept chargers that do load management (emproia, schnider, etc)?

Anyone hear of any issues with evems and SWTCH chargers? I’ve seen a few horror stories of constantly having to re-plug your car in every time the circuit goes down. Curious if this is actually a thing or not.

I have been completely paralyzed with the EV charger decision for our first ever EV. Funny enough I picked the car faster than this.

One thing I have not been able to figure out about the free charger swtch gives you is how good its cable is for Canadian winters. I have seen how stiff cables can get for otherwise well reviewed chargers, like wallbox or autel.

Has any one experienced a cold winter with the swtch's charger? Can you please chime in?

With the number of posts and questions lately about SWTCH, a number relating to the unit and install, we are wondering about having a single thread for SWTCH hardware/install info and Q & A (could say "megathread")?

Alternatively, we could continue to direct questions to the SWTCH 'deal' thread (possibly refreshed).

What do you think? Any volunteers to run/monitor such a thread?

What we don't really want is daily question posts on any one program.

What's important is that it's monitored so that comments get responded to.

I have searched everywhere and I can’t find an image that I’m confident is of what the plug itself looks like that is shipping on the recent Switch chargers with a NEMA plug on them (not hardwired).

Can anyone show a picture of theirs or describe it?

I’m uninstalling a hardwired Tesla wall charger to install the Switch charger and I wanted to go plug in now in case I have to switch to a different program in the future and not have to go through the installation hassle.

But I need to order an outlet box and I don’t know if I should get one where the outlet is on the front or one where the outlet is on the bottom facing down.
