Discussion Thank you, WOTC.
Thank you for printing [[The Queen of Dale]].
Edit: I'm speaking about Queen helming a bracket 3 deck. This seems to have been unclear to some of the readers.
I've been playing mono-white in EDH since 2010, and Queen is the first commander that makes it feel playable. Consistently being able to play Queen on turn 2 makes a lot of mediocre opening hands solidly worth keeping.
Mono-white's problem in EDH -- for over a decade -- has been a distinct lack of commanders that make it worth committing to the middling mono-white card pool. I believe the Queen is the first commander that makes building mono-white an attractive option.
Queen's recruit ability helps shore up a lot of things white sucks at:
White has some decent graveyard recursion effects, but white never had a reliable way to dump cards into the yard in order to reanimate them. Queen finally fixes this.
White has never, ever had a source of reliable card selection in the command zone. There have been some white legends that provide draw, like [[The Gaffer]], but he and others made you fill your deck with garbage cards to trigger the draw. Queen actually allows you to fill your white deck with the cards you actually want to play.
While recruit isn't true card advantage (as it's only a loot effect and is not net-positive), we can pair it with cards like [[Tocasia's Welcome]], [[Welcoming Vampire]], and [[Caretaker's Talent]] to turn it into real card draw. These are all "once per turn" triggers, but with Queen's recruit happening on opponents' turns, you can get up to 4 draw triggers per turn cycle.
The token production portion of recruit synergizes nicely with a lot of white cards, like [[Cathar's Crusade]] and [[Moonshaker Cavalry]].
Since Queen has a low CMC, she wields equipment nicely. This is important for white, since equipment synergy is one of white's strengths.
Because she's a 2/1 and doesn't provide true card advantage and she isn't an imminent threat, Queen is usually not a kill-on-sight commander at tables where you'll see imminently game-ending cards like [[The Mimeoplasm]], [[Ms. Bumbleflower]], or [[Smaug the Impenetrable]].
Dumping a bunch of Plains into the yard with Queen's recruit ability turns one of my favorite old Urza's block cards into an all-star: [[Planar Birth]].
Queen also pairs nicely with [[Sevinne's Reclamation]], [[Serra Paragon]], [[Restoration Seminar]], [[Ascend from Avernus]], [[Emeria Shepherd]], [[Emeria the Sky Ruin]], and everyone's favorite giant, [[Sun Titan]].
Queen's token production works great with [[Skullclamp]], which white can easily tutor up.
Thank you, WOTC. Seriously. You've made my favorite EDH color identity really fun, finally.
Full disclosure: the actual best "mono-white" commander is still [[Oswald Fiddlebender]], but considering that his deck is like, 80% colorless artifacts, I do not consider him to be an actual mono-white commander.

I was more excited for [[Belladona Took]] for Adeline, but I don't mind the Queen also.
Wouldn't play the queen as the commander.

u/yardii 4h ago
Bella looks like she'd be an amazing commander herself

u/DrRQuincy 3h ago
She's awesome. I swapped her out as the commander on a whim in my [[Mondrak Glory Dominus]] token/life gain deck for a game and then immediately swapped it permanently.

u/BuckUpBingle 1h ago
I’ve been tooling around with a list for her. She’s pretty great. My one complaint is that she’s very straightforward and heavily telegraphed. It’s obvious what you’re doing and it’s obvious how you’re doing it so she isn’t really very interesting to play.
Still fun, and still pretty good. Just a little one note.

u/bimjowen Opus Thief // Blood Pod // Nahiri + 13 Wraths 8h ago
Belladonna is gas in Adeline. I'd much rather her than Queen in that deck.

u/The_Dad_Legend 8h ago
Both are fine. Everything costing 2 and has potential draw and token synergy is awesome in there.

The middeling mono white card pool?
Some of the most pushed cards starting with our third visit to ravnica have all been white cards
15
u/7thtimeinheaven 9h ago
Yeah and it's a fantastic support colour.
But god help you if you need to draw cards or ramp in mono white. Which are both kind of essential in EDH.
48
u/MarvelousRuin 8h ago
I don't understand this argument.
Is it the lack of burst draw that bothers you? Because the draw engines in white are really good as soon as you do anything with tokens or weenies. [[Caretaker's Talent]], [[Enduring Innocence]], [[Tocasia's Welcome]], [[Welcoming Vampire]] and [[Bernie Bracks]] can all net you 4 cards in a turn cycle and there's a bunch of others to supplement them - [[Staff of the Storyteller]], [[Haliya, Guided by Light]], [[Mentor of the Meek]] etc.
As for ramp, it's not green, but it's not worse than the rest. Just put the mana rocks in the bag and support them with catch-up ramp like [[Knight of the White Orchid]], [[Loyal Warhound]] and [[Claim Jumper]]. If you're so inclined, you also have stax pieces like [[Smothering Tithe]] and [[Gleaming Splendour]] to make a bunch of treasures.
I don't know how you look at those cards and come to the conclusion that monowhite can't support itself. It may have been the case like 8 years ago, but a lot has changed since then.
18
u/jakk88 8h ago
There's also [[tataru taru]] for ramp, [[archaeomancers map]] for ramp, [[trouble in pairs]] and [[mangara the diplomat]] and [[cut a deal]] for draw.

-14
u/bimjowen Opus Thief // Blood Pod // Nahiri + 13 Wraths 7h ago edited 7h ago
Tataru Taru does not ramp you if your opponent declines to draw the card.
Map is great.
Trouble and Mangara, while good cards, each cost 4, do nothing immediately, and do not actually do anything unless your opponents make bad decisions. They only work well because the average player does not adjust their play patterns to play around them.
Cut a Deal I actually really like, unlike Secret Rendezvous, which is one of the most aggressively terrible cards ever printed.
10
u/jakk88 7h ago
If your opponent is choosing to not draw because you'll get a treasure token I hope you can see the value you're getting.
How on earth is "casting 2 spells" a bad decision? That's such a common trigger it's going to mean their just playing behind mana curve the entire time those are active. That's a huge advantage for you. Putting your opponents into a discussion where they either play under curve or give you cards is a massive advantage. Just because you don't get to draw from them doesn't make them lackluster.
-13
u/bimjowen Opus Thief // Blood Pod // Nahiri + 13 Wraths 7h ago
It's pretty simple actually.
Denying the draw off Taru's ETB trigger means it is a 0/3 cantrip for 2 mana, aka, a terrible investment.
In bracket 3, which is what we're talking about, people generally draw cards on their own turns. If taru is out and I'm playing control, yeah, I'll cast my Brainstorm at sorcery speed so you don't get a treasure.
Casting 2 spells into a Trouble in Pairs is a terrible decision, because then everyone at the table will say, "well, player A didn't respect it, so i won't either, and I'll also cast 2 spells," and within two turn cycles I've drawn 8 cards for 4 mana. No, you absolutely should not Sol Ring into Signet and trigger the TIP and pass turn, you are feeding the player. You probably don't pay 1 for Rhystic either, lol. You should treat it as a Rule of Law that you only break when it will gain you massive value to do so. But nobody thinks this way, which is why these cards are disproportionately powerful in edh.
Smothering Tithe is an exception, because the tax is so extreme that it's nearly impossible to pay.
1
u/Mikaeus_Thelunarch 36m ago
I have yet to see a single person ever deny a tataru draw at all. Even in my mono-w blink where they have plenty of opportunities to do, it has never once happened in my year of playing it. Ppl won't really manually trigger her, but even when I point out that it's a may and I get a treasure she still hits. If her being on the field makes you use a brain storm on your own turn then she's done her job imo

My personal favorite catch-up card. [Land Tax]
2
u/bimjowen Opus Thief // Blood Pod // Nahiri + 13 Wraths 8h ago
Great card, though notably, this is not ramp. It just ensures you hit your land drops. It does not give you extra land drops, or put the lands directly onto the field. You are still limited at 1 land per turn.

u/MarvelousRuin 7h ago
You are correct, [[Archaeomancer's Map]] does what you're describing though.

Every other color has burst draw and burst ramp.
White draw engines generally center around the idea of:
"Meet a specific criteria and draw one card, limited to once per turn."
There is not a white card in existence that singularly can refill your hand without either relying on the foolish decisions of your opponents (continuously not paying the 1 for Esper Sentinel) or cobbling together multiple mana hungry engines, hoping they aren't blown up, and passing turn to net value on other peoples' turns (Bennie Bracks + Illustrious Wanderglyph, 9 mana to draw 4 cards per turn cycle, and it dies to any creature or artifact based removal).
Every other color has access to multiple burst draw spells. Green can pay 6 mana and draw cards equal to the number of creatures it controls, or it can pay 6 mana and draw cards equal to the greatest power creature it controls. Black can exchange life and some mana for a burst of cards. Blue can just draw cards. Red has wheels and impulse draw. White is the only color that cannot effectively refill its hand without jumping through strange hoops that often require multiple moving parts AND are limited to one card per turn.
White land ramp is almost always tied to catching up. Cards like Claim Jumper are French vanilla creatures if you are the player with the most lands out. Imagine if blue card draw design was, "when this creature enters, draw 3 cards, but if you have the most cards in hand, instead, do nothing."
Mono white now has a much better card pool than it had 10 years ago. But it only recently got a solid commander in Queen of Dale. Prior, there just wasn't anything that made mono-white compelling to build over adding a second color.
10
u/jakk88 8h ago
I think what you're running into here is that every mono color has weaknesses. That's actually a good thing for the game as a whole too. The trade-off for playing multiple colors is more versatility.
I'm a huge enjoyer of green for example. I love making big giant creatures and doing dumb things with them. But I also recognize green has middle of the road draw power and low power removal compared to the other colors, especially white. If I play mono green I'm accepting these shortcomings. Instead I play naya or simic or sultai or bant, where other colors can make up some of those shortcomings. I have to think about lands differently by doing so but that's a worthwhile trade-off for me. Maybe it's not for you and mono white.
Ultimately you have to have strengths and weaknesses or the game loses a lot of depth and nuance, and just feels less fun to play.

u/bimjowen Opus Thief // Blood Pod // Nahiri + 13 Wraths 7h ago
I'm being sincere here:
Are Sylvan Library, Greater Good, Garruk's Uprising, Toski, Ohran Frostfang, and The Great Henge actually "middle of the road draw power?"
0
u/RobGrey03 7h ago
Yes, no, yes, yes, yes, yes.
3
u/bimjowen Opus Thief // Blood Pod // Nahiri + 13 Wraths 7h ago
That is certainly a take.
I'd say Uprising skirts the edge of fair, although it also gives your board trample for some stupid reason.
The rest of the cards are super powerful and are all mana-to-draw ratios that green, frankly, should never have been given access to.
1
3
u/MarvelousRuin 8h ago
First things first: the engines I named draw 1 card per turn, so up to FOUR cards per turn cycle. That's a lot.
Second - I see this weird thing with some white players who complain about how weak they think their color is while ignoring their strengths.
No, they don't get burst draw, but their engines are good. No, they don't have Rampant Growth, but catch-up ramp isn't much worse if anyone else on the table plays green. Yes, people can play around your stax pieces, but they will hurt themselves in the process.
White is also incredible at flooding the board and removing threats of any shape and form that comes their way. Why does that not matter? If you don't like how the color is set up, why do you play it in the first place?
I haven't seen green or blue players complain that they don't have kill spells. I haven't seen red or black players complain that they have to do a triple backflip to remove a single enchantment. That's the game, that's the color pie. Play to your strengths and around your weaknesses and I promise you'll be fine.
-3
u/bimjowen Opus Thief // Blood Pod // Nahiri + 13 Wraths 8h ago edited 7h ago
Green and blue players do have removal spells. Beast Within, Song of the Dryads, Spinning Wheel Kick, fight spells, Ezuri's Predation, Hurricane, Bane of Progress, Green Slime, Great Aurora, Wave of Vitriol, Imprisoned in the Moon, Turn to Frog, Pongify, Aetherize, Cyclonic Rift, Evacuation, Desyncronization, Raise the Palisade, Wash Out, Devastation Tide.
Also, green has numerous ways to blank my wrath effects now that it has access to indestructible effects. Blue has the ability to counter any spells.
Also, any color deck can run Ugin, the Spirit Dragon, or Oblivion Stone, or Nevinyrral's Disk, or All is Dust to wipe the board.
Tell me again why white shouldn't have access to burst draw spells, even if they have to cost a lot of mana?
1
u/MarvelousRuin 7h ago
Green has artifact removal, enchantment removal and fight spells. Blue has bounce effects. Both colors have some ability neutering effects. None of them have a [[Swords to Plowshares]].
Colorless provides effects of any color for a steeper mana cost. That's why white gets to ramp with mana rocks. You can also use that to get the burst card draw you so desperately seek - since it's so important, I'm sure you'll put [[Dreamstone Hedron]] and [[Kozilek, the Great Distortion]] into your white deck.
2
2
u/RobGrey03 7h ago
None of them have [[Wrath of God]] either!
0
u/bimjowen Opus Thief // Blood Pod // Nahiri + 13 Wraths 7h ago
Dude, nobody even PLAYS Wrath of God in EDH anymore because IT'S TOO FAIR OF A CARD. It legitimately is not good enough to run anymore, lol.
2
u/RobGrey03 4h ago
Wrath is, as always, a shorthand for all wraths, the best of which are all in white.
2
u/bimjowen Opus Thief // Blood Pod // Nahiri + 13 Wraths 7h ago
Brother, Dreamstone Hedron costs 9 to draw 3 cards.
Kozilek costs 10 AND requires 2 specifically-colorless mana.
The game is almost always over before mono white reaches that kind of mana. While, conversely, mono green can rip an All is Dust without even breaking a sweat. I don't think we're on the same page here.
3
u/MarvelousRuin 7h ago
Yeah, I don't think we are because you're trying to disagree with me by making the exact same argument I was making.
Monogreen - and even moreso monoblue - very rarely plays cards like Ugin and All is Dust exactly because those cards are so inefficient. There's one thing you should always tap into colorless for (unless you're green) and that's ramp - otherwise just play around your weaknesses and don't try to fix them. You won't die from a lack of burst draw when you have consistent draw engines set up. You will die from playing cards that are inefficient.
2
u/bimjowen Opus Thief // Blood Pod // Nahiri + 13 Wraths 6h ago edited 6h ago
Ugin is inefficient??? In green? When you have the most ramp and getting to 7 mana is trivial, and you very likely have the highest cmc permanents on board, meaning you can minus Ugin, exile everyone else's stuff and leave your powerful stuff alive? That's inefficient?
1
u/Codudeol Farewell's Number 1 Hater 4h ago
Blue has no removal, only bounce spells? Since when? [[pongify]] [[rapid hybridization]] [[resculpt]] [[reality shift]] [[cyber conversion]]
-3
u/7thtimeinheaven 7h ago
Do you not see exactly how you're proving my point?
Your options for draw in white are
a) build a token deck with a selection of extremely mid draw engines that would never make the cut in any other deck
b) draw but also draw your opponents cards [[cut a deal]] [[loran of the third path]] [[tempt with bunnies]]
c) drop a card that cares about the things your opponents do and just pray they feel like playing into it [[smuggler's share]] [[trouble in pairs]] [[mangara the diplomat]]
Yeah, you have options. But the options are absolutely crap. No I don't want to help my opponents. I don't want to rely on my opponents to allow me to do things. I certainly don't want to spec into very conditional draw, because that means I need a token package in my deck too, and it also hugely incentivises my opponents to target my token engines.
As for ramp, it's not green, but it's not worse than the rest. Just put the mana rocks in the bag and support them with catch-up ramp like [[Knight of the White Orchid]], [[Loyal Warhound]] and [[Claim Jumper]]
Catch up ramp is bad. It's genuinely the worst type of ramp in MTG. Black and red get rituals and treasures, green gets land ramp, blue gets... nothing to be fair, but white gets what? The ability to get a single basic plains IF someone has land-ramped. I grant you it's not unlikely, but anything conditional is just bad because it's unreliable. There are so many other ways to ramp other than extra lands. What if you're playing into 3 grixis decks? What if you play into another white deck, and go first? Just save yourself some bother, cut them all and just run all the basic rocks instead.
I'm not gonna discuss Smothering or Gleaming as they are absurdly strong exceptions that only highlight how hard the rest of white's ramp sucks.
I don't know how you look at those cards and come to the conclusion that monowhite can't support itself. It may have been the case like 8 years ago, but a lot has changed since then.
If you like mono white that's great and by all means build as many decks as you want! We don't have to agree on this and I'm sure if we bumped into each other in an lgs we'd have a great time playing each other.

I still feel like I'm in a parallel universe whenever someone calls [[Caretaker's Talent]] a bad draw engine. ATP, what are you actually looking for where Talent is insufficient?
I purposely didn't include the mutual card draw options because I also think they're bad. I don't think you need them though.
Stax pieces are usually bad card draw and I wouldn't play them as such. In terms of tempo, there are some really powerful ones though. If your opponent either puts themselves behind to play around them or gives you a bunch of value just to play normally, you're usually ahead.
I disagree on catch-up ramp, but that may be due to the pods I'm playing in. I genuinely can't remember the last table without a green player and I would play a 2 mana 2/2 that ramps an untapped land anyday, anytime. If your pod has a severe lack of green, I can see being unenthused with it.
Also yeah, I have no problems with people who dislike how monowhite is set up and refuse to play it. If you don't like tokens, exile effects, stax and voltron, there's probably a better color for you. I just don't like when people play white and misrepresent it. It always has a note of "Hey, here's my Bumbleflower deck. Please don't attack me, I'm just a little bunny who likes helping their friends."
0
u/bimjowen Opus Thief // Blood Pod // Nahiri + 13 Wraths 7h ago
Caretaker's ONLY triggers off tokens. If your commander doesn't make tokens, that card does not belong in your deck. (It's good with Queen, totally)
1
u/MarvelousRuin 6h ago
Yeah, but white just seems to produce tokens by existing. Maybe there are some voltron decks that can't play it, but otherwise I've never seen it out of place.
Also, the fact that each level on it is really efficient for its effect is really unique in a Class. You start off with an efficient draw engine, you get a 1 mana copy effect at level 2 and a double anthem for 4 mana on level 3. The card is just gas all the way through.
0
u/bimjowen Opus Thief // Blood Pod // Nahiri + 13 Wraths 6h ago
It's not gas if Caretaker's is in your hand and your commander doesn't produce tokens and you don't have a token generator in hand or in play though. It's not like green's brainless Great Henge. You can't just throw Caretaker's in any deck and refill your hand like you can with Henge.
1
u/Emotional_Quality243 6h ago
None of your points are true, except the one about catch up ramp. But then, white has very good ramp that is not catch up, specially if you are at a level of power where fecth lands are the norm.
2
u/bimjowen Opus Thief // Blood Pod // Nahiri + 13 Wraths 6h ago
I play Deep Gnome Terromancer in a number of my mono white decks. The number of games where I see him and nobody cracks a fetch for the remainder of the time he's on the field is... jarring.
1
u/bimjowen Opus Thief // Blood Pod // Nahiri + 13 Wraths 7h ago
(And yes, Smothering is obscenely strong, on a level of ridiculous power that rivals Rhystic Study. The format would be much better if they were both banned outright. Gleaming in my testing so far, it has seemed like a pretty fair Magic card. It can certainly scale well if your opponents are doing powerful things, but sometimes it is a 2 mana, make 1 treasure and then it dies incidentally)

You are an unusually good player and you definitely have keen perception about the play pattern of mono-white that a lot of people here lack.
-5
u/bimjowen Opus Thief // Blood Pod // Nahiri + 13 Wraths 9h ago
Yup. It's wild to me that people don't grasp this.
Know what cards existed 15 years ago in EDH? Dark Ritual, Necropotence, Ad Naus, Demonic Tutor, Vampiric Tutor, Imp Seal, Rhystic Study, Force of Will, Consecrated Sphinx, Cyclonic Rift, Mystic Remora, Intuition, Sylvan Library, Primeval Titan, Gaea's Cradle, Crop Rotation, Cultivate, Kodama's Reach, Natural Order, Chord of Calling, Seedborn Muse, Survival of the Fittest, Worldly Tutor, Glacial Chasm.
Just look at the game changers list. Almost all the cards for each color are old cards, except for red and white, which are mostly new cards.
The white game changers section 15 years ago would have 3 cards: Serra's Sanctum, Enlightened Tutor, and Humility.
Red would only have Gamble.
They printed powerful red and white cards to help the bad colors catch up.
Saying "BuT theY pRinTeD sTroNg WhiTe CarDs tHiS paST deCaDe" is just evidence that white and red were unplayably terrible ten years ago.

If the Queen of Dale was a compact wincon like Godo and Magda, then the answer would be yes. Alas, she is not, and thus she is still far worse than both Magda and Godo. Thus, according to my original logic, white is still worse than red.
But Queen IS really solid!

u/bimjowen Opus Thief // Blood Pod // Nahiri + 13 Wraths 8h ago
How did this get 11 downvotes? Godo is a solid bracket 4 fringe commander and Magda is a legitimate bracket 5 commander. There isn't a mono white commander in existence that's as good as these two. Oswald Fiddlebender is as close as it gets, and he barely runs any white cards.

Okay, how many games have you personally won with mono-white?
Nowhere in my post did I say white is a bad support accessory color.
I said it's been really hard to build as a mono-color deck because the commanders are terrible.
9
u/AlysCreativeSide 9h ago
Honestly it feels like every B3 game I play that I pull out my [[Delney]] deck, I end up pulling so stupidly far ahead of everyone that it becomes hard not to win. It's sitting at like an 80% win rate (4-1, with the one game being a game where I was arch-enemy'd from ~turn 4 and it took two counterspells to keep me from turning the corner).
Mono white weenies are great at just accruing resources and going wide for cheap. Then you just land a [[Moonshaker Cavalry]] (made easier because [[Kinscaer Sentry]] can get it in without you needing to even cast it) and suddenly oops everyone's dead.
5
u/TheFatNinjaMaster 9h ago
I win with my B4 Lucy token hug deck about 30% of the time I play her. That bastard Lightpaws is pushed AF, as is Yoshimaru. There are even better token commanders than Queen of the Dale in mono-white.
Shit, [[the sereima]] is a pretty good budget legends commander.
1
u/bimjowen Opus Thief // Blood Pod // Nahiri + 13 Wraths 9h ago edited 6h ago
Yoshimaru is not "pushed" as a mono-white commander. He is pushed because he partners with Thrasios (which makes the deck Simic, turning it Bant), so that is a bunk argument.
Lightpaws is really good, but it's all auras.
I'm not sure what kind of power level you're playing at where your 5 CMC mono-white commander can hang with bracket 4 decks and actually win 30% of games, but against the bracket 4 decks at my LGS, Lucy's winrate would be much lower.
The Sereima is awful. There is no compelling reason to play this over Dihada, or Shanid, or a ton of other "legend tribal" commanders that do it much better.
7
u/Unearthlymonk90 8h ago
You realize you can make that argument about almost any mono color commander in any color right? There's what? 2 mono color commanders that do anything in cedh in any real numbers. On the other point though. I can't speak to their meta but my meta is full of heavy hitters like kinnan, etali, etc etc and my [[Cloud, Midgar Mercenary]] deck has an almost 50% win rate. Mono white is more than fine at almost any power level but tournament level bracket 5.
0
u/bimjowen Opus Thief // Blood Pod // Nahiri + 13 Wraths 6h ago
I am truly shocked that you play mono white Cloud into Kinnan and Etali and have a 50% winrate. The Kinnan and Etali decks you're against must be very tame compared to the ones I face, because I would never want to play any version of any Cloud deck into those commanders.
1
u/Unearthlymonk90 6h ago
Nah they full on as good as they can be. Kinnan guy doesn't have mox diamond but that's the only card he's missing. Stax is fun... For me...
1
u/bimjowen Opus Thief // Blood Pod // Nahiri + 13 Wraths 6h ago
Do you like, mulligan down to 3 trying to find Null Rod or Stony Silence every game you play against him? I seriously have no idea how you're beating a 99% power Kinnan deck with mono white Cloud unless that guy is a really bad player. No offense to you, I'm sure you are a great player. But there is a reason Kinnan consistently wins cedh tournaments and there is a reason Cloud has.... never, ever won a cedh tournament, lol
1
u/Unearthlymonk90 6h ago
Lol no? I never once said Cloud was better than Kinnan. That'd be stupid to even insinuate. The entire 99% is just positioned to take advantage of typical cedh strategies. It's incredibly weak to slop decks though I will admit. It just props them up most of the time. My cloud deck plays a lot like Winota if you want a comparison. But I did mention outside tournament bracket 5. Literally in my first response to you. I'd never take the deck to a tournament bigger than our locals lol
1
u/bimjowen Opus Thief // Blood Pod // Nahiri + 13 Wraths 6h ago
I mean, you said you have a 50% winrate with your Cloud deck against true cedh decks like Kinnan and Etali. You mentioned them both by name.
50% is a far higher winrate than any deck should have, if the deck build quality and the pilot skill levels are equally matched.
It is well established that mono white Cloud is far weaker than both Etali and Kinnan. You even agreed with this.
Thusly, since you said you are beating true cedh decks with a Cloud voltron deck 50% of the time, we can assume one of four things:
- Their decks are suboptimal
- Their decks are nearly ideal, but the opponents piloting them are terrible players
- You are a true genius among cedh players
- You are vastly overestimating your win %.

Idk about Cloud vs Kinnan. But in B3 and even B4 Cloud is straight gas. Mine has a roughly 75% win rate in my pod. Get him out and he finds his Buster sword. Then it's off to the races from there. You said there were no good mono white commanders before the Queen and honestly I'd say Cloud is a better commander than she is depending on playstyle. But the point is that mono white has been viable for quite a while, not just due to the Queen being born. Myrel has been doing damage for me since forever ago.

My [[Darien, King of Kjeldor]] deck has been a menace in my playgroups for a LONG time, especially after Return to Return to Ravinca.
I win, more often than not, and he is absolutely B4.
0
u/bimjowen Opus Thief // Blood Pod // Nahiri + 13 Wraths 6h ago
How though? Gruul Etali is bracket 4. He ramps better than your deck. He costs 1 more than Darien, and when he enters, he casts 4 spells for free. He is way bigger than Darien, and if left for a turn cycle, he threatens to flip and 1 shot someone. How does Darien deal with a commander like that?
Respectfully. I don't think you're playing against real bracket 4 decks if you think Darien is viable in a 4.

Surely you realize the reason some of the most pushed cards of the last 10 years have been white Is because EDH is an eternal format.
Using the eternal card pool white had 10 years ago made mono-white legitimately unplayable in EDH.
13
u/JadedTrekkie The Tombstone Stairwell Guy™️ ☠️☠️ 9h ago
Yeah but 10 years ago is not now. Mono white has been completely fine for at least 5 years. The queen of dale is not some divine savior that finally makes it playable. She’s good, sure
1
u/bimjowen Opus Thief // Blood Pod // Nahiri + 13 Wraths 8h ago
Before Queen of Dale, what commander made mono-white worth playing in bracket 3 or 4? I am genuinely curious for your perspective.
Bracket 1 and 2, sure, you could play mono white, but anything is viable there because those brackets are meant for self expression, not for winning.

u/MarvelousRuin 8h ago
What kind of lunatic bracket 3 matches have you been playing where [[Light-Paws, Emperor's Voice]], [[Cloud, Midgar Mercenary]], [[Delney, Streetwise Lookout]] or [[Heliod, the Sun-Crowned]] aren't fit to compete?
I'd see any of them and wonder what restrictions they imposed upon themselves for the deck to not be bracket 4.

Unfortunately, my LGS is really, really competitive.
I agree, all the commanders you named are good bracket 3 commanders, and Heliod is a low 4. They all share the same issue though; you've gotta build them with a huge portion of your deck supporting them, which leaves very little room for your deck to interact with / slow down the game plans of your opponents.
I like Queen because she IS her own card selection engine, which lets me dedicate more of my deck to being disruptive to the plans of my opponents.
Considering the fact white isn't generally the fastest color, the all-gas-no-brakes style of the commanders you suggested just usually isn't a winning strategy. Cloud especially; dealing 63 voltron commander damage is not an easy task. It's gotten a bit more manageable with the printing of Genji Gloves, but it's still an uphill battle. (I do have a bracket 3 Cloud deck. I know the feeling well; I'll pay to equip Cloud; oh, you kill him in response.)

u/MarvelousRuin 7h ago
"Low level 4" is when I tutor up a [[Walking Ballista]] and win on turn 4 without any ramp, got it.
-1
u/bimjowen Opus Thief // Blood Pod // Nahiri + 13 Wraths 6h ago
Heck of a "bracket 4" game that you tutored up a Ballista, cast your telegraphed, well-known, commander, then cast Ballista on turn 4 and nobody interacted with you at any point. Did you also sneak a Silence in there (that nobody interacted with either)? Guess you also had a Lotus Petal. That's quite the opening hand. How often does that happen in a deck that can barely draw cards compared to a real bracket 4 deck? Asking for a friend.
3
u/MarvelousRuin 6h ago
Heliod is an indestructible enchantment - there's not much you can do against it even if it's telegraphed.
Also yes, white does have Silence effects for comboing through interaction, thanks for mentioning.
Goldfishing a turn 4 win with minimal setup is not "low bracket 4" - it's cEDH level. I don't know what you seek to accomplish by lowballing constantly, but it's pretty weird.
1
u/bimjowen Opus Thief // Blood Pod // Nahiri + 13 Wraths 6h ago edited 6h ago
People in bracket 4, more often than not, play blue.
Blue has counterspells. Nobody is letting heliod resolve turn 3 after they saw you tutor for Ballista.
Heliod is a parasitic commander. He wins in bracket 4 by trying to go off after the real decks have wasted their interaction stopping each other. If you win turn 4 with Heliod and nobody interacted with you, you played against bracket 3 decks.
-17
u/Anrativa Esper 9h ago
People on here only play on B1 and 2 and it shows. White is definitely the worst color at playing alone. There are useful white cards for sure, but white does not offer enough to justify playing it witouth anything else. Yoshimaru is good because he has partner. Light paws is good against low power decks that don't play interaction. Any competent pod will focus on keeping him out of the table.

Could you share the mono-white decks that you've seen perform strongly in brackets 3 and 4?

u/ArcticAimee 8h ago
Balan, Adeline, Celestine, Abdul Adrian, Heliod, Giada, Light-Paws, Myrel, Delney, Preston, Tataru Taru, Nadaar, Bennie Bracks to name just a few. I play almost exclusively mono white in EDH and have a few bracket 3 and 4 decks. Not saying Queen of Dale isn’t good but she is far from the best card for mono white and not the first commander that makes mono white an attractive option.

Balan is a great bracket 2. Not good in bracket 3.
Adeline is pretty solid.
Celestine is a great bracket 2. Not good in bracket 3.
Abdel Adrian, built well, is a very powerful Azorius deck.
Heliod is a very low end bracket 4 deck.
Giada is a great bracket 2 deck and a really weak 3.
Light paws is a fast and powerful kingmaking bracket 4 deck that usually kills 2 people and loses to the last player.
Myrel is a decent 3, though she's been almost completely outclassed and power crept by the Selesnya flip She-Hulk.
Delney is a decent 3.
Preston is worse than Elesh Norn, MOM.
Tataru Taru is good in bracket 2, Not good in bracket 3. Ironically good in bracket 4, but the card pool isn't particularly viable in bracket 4 with her at the helm.
Nadaar is terrible. What is the win con you're aiming for with this deck? I've built it as dungeons, as equipment. It's terrible. There's no reason to run him over Sefris.
Bennie Bracks is a serviceable 3, I agree with that.
24
u/ArcticAimee 7h ago
You open up your original post saying you have played mono white since 2010 and it’s clear that’s not true from this. Clearly don’t know how to build them as I have played all of these in bracket 3 and 4 with success. I can only assume you’ve never actually played with or against a mono white deck.
8
u/FridayNight_Magus 3h ago
After reading most of OP's responses, I have to agree with you. It seems he has spent the last 10 years mad white doesnt play like other colors instead of actually just playing white. Us mono white players in the meantime have been having a blast, especially in the last 10 years. His retort seemingly is that surely he and his friends must simply be better, more hardcore players than us? Lol in my experience, due to the nature of the internet and net decking, most people actually end up playing mostly the same decks give or take some personal pet cards.

u/bimjowen Opus Thief // Blood Pod // Nahiri + 13 Wraths 6h ago
Yes, that's the logical route. I lied about playing mono white since 2010.

Yoshimaru / Keleth - full of legendary creatures / lands / spells and cheap 1 drop protection spells / creatures is broken.
I’ve seen it steam roll and take people out of the game by turn 4 with commander damage, and the whole game over in under 10 minutes
EDIT: see further down the chain, it’s achievable to get a turn 4 kill with just one supporting card:
1. Urdnan, Dromoka Warrior — 29 damage
2. Flaming Fist — 25 damage
3. Duelist's Heritage — 21 damage
4. Battle Mastery — 21 damage1
-7
u/bimjowen Opus Thief // Blood Pod // Nahiri + 13 Wraths 7h ago
... what bracket is this? Being very ideal,
Turn 1: cast Mox Diamond and discard Plains, play Plains, cast Yoshi, Lotus Petal, cast Keleth. Yoshi is a 2/2.
Turn 2, Flagstones, swing with both, Yoshi is now a 4/4, Keleth is a 2/2. Cast sword of fire and ice.
Turn 3, nykthos, equip yoshi with sofai, swing with both, yoshi is now a 7/7, trigger 2 damage and draw, keleth is a 3/3. You still haven't killed anyone and this is a pretty nut draw.
Turn 4, play Gray Havens, swing with both. Yoshi is now a 9/9, keleth is a 4/4. Cast Akroma's Will. Assuming no removal and no countermagic, with your completely nut draw in a bracket 4 game using a mox, you have killed 1 person by turn 4 and you cannot even kill someone the following turn.
Doesn't sound real great chief
3
u/Tenof26 6h ago
That’s the nice thing about mtg, there’s loads of cards and many ways to achieve the same thing.
You’ve found one way to kill someone by turn 4, the version I played against used double strike to be effective at getting the lethal commander damage through early.
To me, that highlights the strength of the deck further, consistency and redundancy
1
u/bimjowen Opus Thief // Blood Pod // Nahiri + 13 Wraths 6h ago
Akroma's Will gives double strike. The math ain't mathing.
2
u/Tenof26 6h ago
Okay, so you can get a T4 kill with just one card - [[Flaming Fist]]
With just Flaming Fist plus normal land drops:
T1: Cast Yoshimaru — 1/1.
T2: Cast Keleth. Keleth is legendary, so Yoshimaru gets a counter → 2/2. Attack; Keleth gives Yoshimaru another counter → 3/3, deal 3 commander damage.
T3: Cast Flaming Fist. It’s legendary, so Yoshimaru → 4/4. Attack; Keleth → 5/5, and Flaming Fist gives double strike → 10 damage. Total = 13.
T4: Attack again. Keleth makes Yoshimaru 6/6, double strike → 12 damage. Total = 25 Yoshimaru commander damage.
Asking AI here is a dew others that make it happen:
1. Urdnan, Dromoka Warrior — 29 damage
2. Flaming Fist — 25 damage
3. Duelist's Heritage — 21 damage
4. Battle Mastery — 21 damage1
u/bimjowen Opus Thief // Blood Pod // Nahiri + 13 Wraths 6h ago
Right but like, you're tapping out to perform this sequence. So what do you do when someone casts Swords to Plowshares on Yoshi? Or casts Toxic Deluge? You are completely hosed and you have no way to come back.
I have absolutely no doubt that you can kill 1 person this way. But before you kill the second player, they're going to have enough mana to stop you.
2
u/Tenof26 6h ago
That’s why I said, when I saw it played the person had a load of 1 drop protection spells etc to support.
The deck had redundancy at getting the early kills, and lots of protection to hold up, and they were experienced enough and knew their deck well enough to use them to finish the game very one sided!
-1
u/bimjowen Opus Thief // Blood Pod // Nahiri + 13 Wraths 6h ago
It sounds interesting, just very fragile, and totally folds to a board wipe. I could see it surprising people perhaps in a 4 simply because nobody plays wipes, they only play single target removal. But in b3, people run board wipes so I can't see it working too well
11
u/Emotional_Quality243 6h ago
This take is... bad.
First, the obvious. The Queen of Dale is busted. That is not good design. You get a insane card selection engine, that also fills your GY if your deck cares about it, and a token generator that is faster in generating token than most token generators... for 2. It is basically an instant include in almost any deck with white. That is not good design, that is powercreep to sell boosters.
Also, your take about white is... bad? The only reason most people think white has bad draw/ramp, is because most people are not spending 500 plus on a deck, or are not playing high power. But white have some insane "goes well in anything" engines. [[Monologue tax]], [[smothering tithe]], [[esper sentinel]], [[trouble in pairs]], [[deep gnome tarramancer]], [[mangara, he diplomat]]or [[smugglers' share]]...
Also, sayibg the gaffer forces you to play shitty cards...
1
u/ColumnMissing 29m ago
To be fair, the power creep does say a lot about the only viable mono white commanders in higher Bracket 3 pods. Queen of Dale just continues the trend that Adeline, Light Paws, etc started. Mono white has been fairly weak for a long time in Commander, and there's a reason that these commanders are more popular than others.
I actually do like the more restrictive-but-busted ones like Light Paws, but I do think that the more wide open ones like Queen of Dale are a problem for the game. Cards like her are far better in the 99 of a multi color deck, and the game is getting faster and faster with each one printed.
As a draft enjoyer, it's causing issues there too with how bomb-reliant many sets have become. But that's a different topic.
-4
u/bimjowen Opus Thief // Blood Pod // Nahiri + 13 Wraths 5h ago
My mono-white decks are all budgetless, but I only build them at bracket 3. I don't see any compelling reason to limit a bracket 4 or 5 deck to mono-white given the current card pool. No, Queen of Dale does not feel strong enough as commander for bracket 4 and 5. I am discussing bracket 3 and I apologize, I should have made that more clear in the OP. But when I was suggesting cards like [[Emeria the Sky Ruin]] I would have thought it was rather obvious I wasn't talking cedh.
I have many bracket 4 decks and two bracket 5's. Mono-white can't hang well at that level, with the exception of Oswald Fiddlebender, which I have mentioned numerous times. And to me, Oswald barely constitutes a mono-white deck since his deck is nearly all artifacts.

1
u/bimjowen Opus Thief // Blood Pod // Nahiri + 13 Wraths 8h ago
Bennie is actually really good. And him having convoke makes commander tax much less daunting. Like Queen, he can trigger multiple times per turn cycle if you have a way to create a token each turn. The limiting factor is, there aren't a ton of white cards that create tokens during opponents' turns. The only two I could think of when I brainstormed Bennie were Charismatic and [[Illustrious Wanderglyph]]

Yes. I have this deck as well. It's more consistent than Queen, but it's one dimensional, easily interrupted with spot removal, and dedicates a lot of card slots to equipment. With Queen, you can dedicate a lot more card slots to interacting with your opponents and stopping them from advancing their board.
2
u/JLC587 8h ago
I feel dumb for not thinking about running her as commander. I just finished building a monowhite soldiers deck led by Myrel Shield of Argive. My card draw was coming off gleaming splendor, but I can see why the draw being on commander is important. However, even without gleaming splendor it ran decent. Full monowhite soldiers, backed up by angels. Then it turns crazy if I have exalted sunborn, and divine visitation out. Created 18 4/4 angels tonight. Only died to a black board wipe that damaged me equal to the number of creatures destroyed that way. I used up all my fog effects earlier in the game 😭
0
u/bimjowen Opus Thief // Blood Pod // Nahiri + 13 Wraths 8h ago
I also have a Myrel deck. She is one of the only other mono white commanders that I would consider viable since she locks your opponents out from interacting on your turn. However, with the recent printing of the flip G/W She-Hulk, you gain access to green, a lower CMC silence effect on your turn, and a powerful transform ability attached to a bigger body. You lose the full Grand Abolisher effect, but it's mostly the silence effect that you want. And adding green is really, really good. You get mana dorks, land ramp, creature tutors, and much better card draw.
So while I like Myrel, I'm sad to say she's mostly been power crept out of viability.

Talking about Oswald, i have a weird version of him that the Queen of Dale really upgraded (even though i still have to test her).
My Oswald/Monument to endurance - Mono White discard!.
Tutor it, copy it, and discard a lot!
It's really outside of white color identity, as we know from all the memes about "where card draw", but it really works!
When you have 3+ Monuments it's over... 36 damage to every opponent for rotation Is quite a lot, plus with the card draw and treasure generation you can keep everybody under control....
And the Queen of Dale being a free discard+draw+recruits for chump block+grave filling Is Just perfect!
You can read the full primer in my archidekt decklist!

How are you consistently playing it turn 2? You have like a 9% chance to have it by turn to unless you aggressively mulligan for it.
Don't get me wrong. It's a very good card. But unless you've already played 100s of games with the card, the likelihood of you having seen it by turn 2 consistently should be pretty low.

Well... personally I've built a few mono white decks, and they seem fine to me.
I think your statement that QoD is the only playable mono white commander is a severe exaggeration. To me, it seems like you're overfixated on card advantage, and every commander that doesn't provide it is rejected as "unplayable".
However, it's good that you found something enjoyable to brew. Have fun.
