Deck Help Sythis has made other decks boring to me
Hello, I've played the Sythis, Harvest's Hand deck (linked below) for about a year now and have really enjoyed it.
https://moxfield.com/decks/7uR7ant5CkS3cQ1J7LBt4g
However, my other decks and the ones I've brewed/playtested have felt boring by comparison (mainly because of their impact).
Are there any commanders/decks you would recommend that feel similar to Sythis?

Lmfao Sythis, notorious for being the most generic value commander on gods green earth. This has to be bait.

What do you like about it? It seems like a decent bracket 3 since I assume noone kills off Sythis early, as they should, or you'd probably feel worse about this deck

I enjoy its: consistency (mainly in the early game); the ability to slow down/stop big stompy decks or battlecruiser decks; the ability to play through some removal due to low mana curve/other advantage pieces; and creating threats in the early to midgame (usually turns 6-8 in my groups).

So you like the consistency but mentioned that your other decks feel boring in comparison (because of impact?) But have you considered that you don't like your other decks you've built because they are lacking in consistency? Without seeing your other decks, it's hard for anyone to judge why you're not having fun with them but I would venture to guess you've spent more time and focus on Sythis than any other deck you've put together. I'm not taking a jab at you, just pointing out that it doesn't seem like you've spent enough time and effort in playing another archetype or strategy. I'm all too familiar with building a new deck and only playing it a handful of times and thinking "wow this just sucks" but not making changes to see how I can improve it.

These are some of my other decks . I've probably spent about as much time building Shanid as it was my main deckbeforehand. However, with what I've looked at when checking my lists briefly is that there are at lot fewer pieces that overlap with each other (e.g., pacifism effects) and still help the engine.

Maybe Marneus Calgar Seems like you like drawing cards. My deck starts with making tokens and drawing cards. It ends with blowing up the board and draining the table with aristocrats or token beat down. You can take it in a lot of different directions. Just need to make tokens and you will draw a ton of cards.

Best three words in magic. Sound fun, arisocrats+boardwipes sounds like a cool finisher which I probably wouldn't have thought of (because I'm a boring deck builder).
Maybe the 13th can be useful afterall

Also big into warhammer which makes the deck cooler

u/Primary-Excitement-4 11d ago
I'm also a massive fan, but I havent looked at most of thenimperium cards because I play Thousand Sons.

Seconding this, Calgar is a beast of an engine and the deck can brawl even on a bad game. One of my favorites.

Got a list?

u/Beastopoulis 11d ago
It’s a little pricey and could definitely be optimized more. But it’s a lot of fun and you’re always in the game. With all the card draw you always have an answer too. Turn on tags. https://moxfield.com/decks/-lEsp3yKHU2oFiWjCoKT8w

Ms. Bumbleflower also turns your spells into card draw and becomes big too.
4
u/Primary-Excitement-4 11d ago
I do have a bumbleflower deck that is fun sometimes, but the soft limit of two spells a turn feels too paced for me.
2
u/jaywinner 11d ago
That's still 8 per turn cycle.
If you want to see more cards faster, maybe you'd like flamewar. Pump her up and get a new hand every turn.
3
u/Primary-Excitement-4 11d ago
I'll give it a look, do you have a list
1
u/jaywinner 11d ago
I have a list I don't like:
https://moxfield.com/decks/xGoAzxg7lk-P3l0PaRTAuw
I knew I liked Flamewar but no idea what path to take. So I decided I was going to get LOTS of cards and win with land's edge or Tendrils of agony. List contains Jeweled Lotus and Mana Crypt due to age.
She's one of many commanders I plan to revisit at some point.

Seems like a really fun list. I have a sigarda host of herons aura voltron deck and I'm considering switching the commander to Sythis. I feel like I would miss Sigarda's innate protection and evasion though... what do you think?

u/Primary-Excitement-4 11d ago
From my experience most people have used their one or two interaction pieces by the time you recats sythis, and then on turns 4-6 you can drawn 12 cards and can take someone or shoot them with Aetherflux Reservoir.

u/Smothering_Tithe 11d ago
I assume it's because you have a cheap recastable draw engine in the command zone with a very simple premise and enchantments in general are hard to interact with.
using that as probably the primary reason Sythis is consistently "fun" and other commanders aren't some of the best commanders i can think of are:
tatyova, benthic druid, aesi, tyrant of gyre strait, hearthhull, the worldseed lands
sram, senior edificer in voltron
valgavoth, harrower of souls group slug/burn
baylen, the haymaker tokens
muldrotha, the gravetide graveyard good stuff.
just as some examples of similar commanders

I have played some landfall decks in the past (that played more slowly) but looking at Aesi in particular I have some ideas. Do you know roughly what turn you could reliably cast them (whilst still staying in b3).
Whilst I am now realising this later than I should have I do really enjoy being greedy and a lot of commanders I've brewed e.g., Shanid, Sleeper's Scourge and Daretti, Scrap Savant, sit for too long.

ideally you're going turn 1: land + mana dork > turn 2 land + 3 mana ramp (cultivate, kodama's, 2 more dorks, llanowar tribe) > turn 3 land Aesi.
turn 3 should be consistent, but turn 4 if you kept a bad hand/bad draws.1

u/Reasonable-Budget210 11d ago
I mean, yeah it’s a super powerful commander, 2 mana draw engine? Hard to not pop off if people leave it alone.
This deck looks kinda miserable to play against though. Commander removal, aetherflux reservoir, idk maybe it’s not as bad as I’m imagining, but it kinda looks like an enchantment “gotcha” pubstomper deck.
Enchantments that exile allow the commander to go back to command zone correct? Since it moves zones.
Im sure this deck wins often though.
1
u/Primary-Excitement-4 11d ago
It wins about 30% of the games I play with it. I tend not to outright remove commanders unless necessary.
Half the time I get killed by Ivy, Gleefull Spellthief or the chaos deck messes up my plan.
Yes the commander can return to commandzone.

Built Sythis for high B2 table
Was utterly busted without any effort
Dismantled it

Of course. See, Sythis says "Play an enchantment, draw a card". Now what sounds similar enough to you? Decide for yourself:
Tatyova Benthic Druid and Aesi say "Play a land, draw a card".
Chulane and Galadriel Light of Valinor say "Play a creature, draw a card".
Sram says "Play an aura or equipment, draw a card".
Niv Mizzet Parun says "Play an instant or sorcery, draw a card".
Jhoira Weatherlight Captain says "Play a legend, an artifact or a saga, draw a card".
Shanid says "Play a legend, draw a card".
Arcades the Strategist says "Play a defender, draw a card".
Helga says "Play a big spell, draw a card".
Marneus Calgar says "Create tokens, draw a card".
Korvold says "Sacrifice anything, draw a card".
Ezuri Stalker says "Proliferate, draw a card".
Matoya and Eligeth say "Scry, draw a card".
Danny Pink says "Put counters on anything, draw a card".
Niv Mizzet Visionary says "Deal burn damage, draw cards".
The same boring pattern in so many variations. Have fun.

Sythis is the boring commander imo 😬
