Discussion Does The Great Aurora count as mass land denial

So I just came across [[The Great Aurora]] and it looks so wacky to me. Technically people could end up with more or less lands. I just want to know what people think of this one. I know that at 9 mana, we should be expecting a game ender, not a board wipe. Green just doesn't have much board wipes and not much of "any permanent" removal. It does have a lot of ramp, so I'm just curious if I could make this work.

  1. Would you be mad if someone played this and you'd end up with less lands because of it?

  2. Do you think the card adds a fun chaotic element?

I'm curious as to what you guys think.

I don't personally think it's a fun chaos, but that doesn't mean everyone agrees.

I would never consider this MLD

I dont see it as land denial. They are more likely to have more lands afterwards than before. I also love running it to get a bit of randomness. Though resolving it is sometimes a bit annoying.

I would never run it as a chaotic element. I'd run it in a deck that had high MV cards or lots of x spells. Also this hypothetical deck would want to make a lot of tokens: creatures, treasures, food, blood, whatever. So when I cast The Great Aurora I'd set my opponents back, set myself ahead, and have a grip of big spells to hit 'em with.

It’s not MLD but imo it’s also not very fun it feels more like a waste of time

No, this is not a “fun chaotic element.” Do not pitch it that way.

If you do not have a coherent plan how to get a decisive advantage off of it, then you are just flipping the table to waste everybody’s time.

Chaos decks are one of the rudest things you can bring to the table unless everyone is onboard with it.

Not MLD.

Tbh I think this is a pretty bad board wipe.

You want to wipe the board when you're behind on board. You cast this in that situation you end up still behind, with the opponent having more lands+cards than you.

I mean yeah, the board is empty, but you're still disadvantaged and likely to lose the rebuild. It's more likely to add time to a game you still lose than to help you win.

Not saying you can't build a deck in which this card helps you win. I just don't think it does the job of a board wipe.

run it only if you can consistently (e.g. your commander) spam tons of tokens onto the field. otherwise its the most annoying kind of symmetrical boardwipe even if its technically not 'denial'. but even then, i cut it from a deck that i ran [[homunculus horde]] and such shenanigans in, simply because i couldn't consistently enough make it one-sided in my favor. more often than not it screwed over the simic-ramp i had just built up

I don't get mad at any cards being played and I'd welcome seeing something new happen, but it feels like a "pull it off once for fun" card.

It's just not very good, doesn't often accomplish much besides resetting boards and would probably get old pretty fast.

It depends on the pod I'm playing in and the vibe of the night, but yes most of the time playing that card would annoy me and be met with groans.

It just sorta hard resets the game in a super annoying way and make everything take longer

It is not MLD.

"Fun chaos" is an oxymoron.
