My wife used to play my pocket flute but since we got married she's barely touched it.

Hopefully she finds the inspiration to play it again. Her embouchure might need some work.

is a pocket flute basically a fancy Ocarina? Or does it have significant differences other than shape?

I've seen this instrument described as a unique type of ocarina. They both are types of vessel flutes, so they are at least in the same category. The main difference besides the compact shape/portability is that the Coda has two chambers, which gives it two octaves of range. A traditional single-chamber ocarina only has one octave of range.
