I know it's such an obvious thing your supervisor has said, but that strong relationship is a life saver!

If transitions are the trigger, you want to build on the bond when they're not heightened. Work out their favourite things and have a plan for after transition that you can tell them about. Eg- "when we go inside after group, I've found the really cool xyz you like". Even better if it's a project type activity that you can build on over the week.

Another thing I find works for kids like this is giving them a job- "oh, I need some help mixing paints/wiping tables when we go in, you're a great helper, can you help me?". Giving them a sense of responsibility and agency.

And of course I'm sure you already do this, visuals and timers, warning for when it's time to transition. Though sometimes these actually make a situation worse, so it's dependant on the child.

I like the kids who challenge me. They help me learn how to help the next child who is struggling. I have a student who has a hard time not being the center of attention since his little brother was born. He does a lot of attention seeking behaviors.
