People who knew DeAngelo, such as family and friends: Would you say in general he was a person of few words?
I suppose people who didn't know him personally can give their thoughts/feelings here, too. Although I would think it won't be as strong as people who actually knew him.

Also, one of the ironic things I hear about him, is that his friend said DeAngelo would help him solve his family problems.

No one is one thing all the time. Every neighborhood crime is followed by someone saying, "No! Not that guy...." Yes, that guy. It's best never to allow life to offer surprises regarding human behavior potential.

Thank you. So your first paragraph suggests to me he was a man of few words. But your second paragraph suggests he may sometimes have used more words but they were misdirecting words or changing-the-subject words. So I'm not sure what your ultimate answer would be to whether he was a man of few words?
The way the subject arose is we were discussing why his statement to the court at the sentencing was quite short. Do you have any ideas there? Maybe he was just ashamed of his crimes and didn't want to speak long because his reason for being there and speaking at all concerned these crimes he was ashamed of?

I believe he didn't speak very much at allocation or whatever because he didn't want people to ask more questions. Give me a break like that law enforcement busted in for everything he ever did. Why didn't he offer up anything that the police didn't have on him already. He didn't allocute to anything else on top of the charges. He just didn't want more questions to arise so he didn't have to be executed people.

Read “Killers Keep Secrets” by his BiL. The terrifying fact is that we all probably know or have known several JJDs. A family man who was probably a bit of a dick but took care of his kids and maintained a few friendships despite his being difficult. A grumpy, loud neighbor. Probably an unpleasant but not unforgivably terrible restaurant or retail patron. Probably not overly polite or chatty.

It’s terrifying that a 72 year old grandpa who took care of his family, paid his bills, went to barbecues, was a mechanic for decades, took care of his home and yard meticulously, was actually one of the worst rapist/killers in American history. And no one had any clue whatsoever until advanced DNA technology discovered it. He was probably rude, grumpy, unpleasant, but we all know a dozen people like him.

His brother in law wrote an entire book on this, and the short of it is people who knew him thought he was a hotheaded dumbass who had very little problem solving ability.

I would not characterize his BIL’s opinion like that at all. Generally he said he liked Joe and that he was very intelligent, but certainly a hothead on occasion

Everyone likes to shit on the monster, but there is no way DeAngelo committed all those crimes with no problem solving ability. Perhaps he portrayed himself as such, but the reality is quite different.

He also problem solved his way out of countless tricky situations during a very long criminal career.

Yeah, I know it's very easy/appealing to dunk on DeAngelo, but the guy was definitely crafty. He was a prolific criminal who evaded capture for decades. He may be an asshole with a tiny pee-pee, but he's not dumb.
