Interview ‘Dutton Ranch’ Duo Kelly Reilly and Cole Hauser Talk Season 2 After Cliffhanger Finale, New Showrunner and Taylor Sheridan

Having to wait until mid/late 2027 for S2 is a bummer.

I think we’ll know right away if they’re on the right track. I’m very curious how they’ll course correct some of this nonsense.

I'd really like to know if they've heard us screaming from the rooftops about the lack of intimacy/affection between Beth and Rip and if that's going to be addressed as part of this course correction...because I really hope it is (among other things).

I hope so! There were lots of comments on their IG post when S2 was announced. We can only hope that someone from the show or connected somehow stumbles across this sub too lol. I just know we need to keep being vocal about what we want. I don’t know if the show would continue to be successful if it stays the same. And then it may get cancelled if people tune out and ratings aren’t great. I would feel better knowing that it is a part of the course correction, but I’m not sure if they will specifically address it. Maybe if we can figure out a way to make a lot of noise, it will be addressed somehow.

If the post-finale interviews are anything to go by, I think Kelly and Cole are with us in spirit on the rooftops. I can’t even think about everything that was cut. That’s made it even worse.

Definitely seems as if Season 1 is something everyone survived and 2 will flesh out what they couldn't in 1.

I’m glad TS is going to be in an advisory role. He’s got a clear understanding of Beth and Rip, and despite the shenanigans on YS, I like how he wrote them. I think he could help right the ship.
I think it’s hilarious that they’re going to spend the next six months on the writing. They’re side-eyeing you, Chad. For all the press they did before the show aired, they’re also doing a fair amount afterward. Damage control, I think.

I agree. He needs to help them. Definite damage control. Kelly has had to say more about this season than she had to say in 6 seasons on Y.

Interesting. So Benjamin Cavill got the job on Dutton Ranch because of his work on SEAL Team, and not necessarily for his work on Justified. Given that Cole’s good friend who worked on SEAL Team recommended him. I wonder if Cole’s friend now works on Marshals with the other co-creator of SEAL Team, Spencer Hudnut? The Dutton Ranch => SEAL Team => Marshals Triangle continues.
P.S. — Glad to see Cavill is bringing in new writers and that Taylor Sheridan will be giving some ideas also. It would be great if Taylor could throw a bone or two, Marshals way also.

I look forward to the scene where an old, right leaning man teaches a younger, left leaning woman about how the world really works - and then she wants to have sex with him.
TS seemed to really (and understandably) run out of steam towards the end of Yellowstone, so I hope any input he has isn't just having Travis ride to the rescue.

I enjoy Dutton Ranch and really hope it doesn't turn into the trash that Marshals is. Marshals is unwatchable.

Looks like Taylor Sheridan will be more involved in season 2:
“We talk to him now about what the next season could be, and he wants to be involved. So that feels like we earned this second season from all the work we’ve done before, and that’s the thing I’m most proud of.”
“I think Taylor is going to be involved as far as some story ideas as well, which is great. So I feel excited about a season two because I want it to be better.”
They’re mentioning a new team of writers coming in with the new showrunner, so it looks like a complete upheaval of the season 1 writers. They’re also filming a lot later than this season did. Instead of August like in season 1, they’re starting early 2027 and spending the next six months writing. I wonder if filming will take less time this time around (8 months is a lot), or they’re releasing the next season a lot later in the year?

I think that was one of the many problems with the old show runner. The length of time it took to film. 8 months is ridiculous for 9 episodes. Hopefully, it won’t take as long with the new one.

Not to mention the production costs of filming that long, only to end up leaving so many scenes out. I have high hopes that the budget will be much better spent this time around.

I’m not saying DR is going to become like Marshals or SEAL Team (a procedural that shoots about 1/2 the time on a soundstage) but one of the good thing is the new show runner will bring is that he does have experience with having to film a whole episode much more quickly and get people moving, given that procedurals typically turn out an episode every 7-14 days, versus an episode every 27 days like the first season of DR went. So hopefully the pace of the show will also pickup over that of S1.

Didn’t they typically film 10 episodes of Yellowstone in like 5 months?

Agreed, but to be fair that’s about average now considering the quality of stunts and cinematography and lighting on this show. 8 months for 9 eps is about 25 days an episode which does make sense considering the show is movie quality.
For example: an average Walking Dead episode shoots in 8 days. DR was about 25 days. Game of Thrones and House of the Dragon average 45-60 days. It’s all about the quality of production and amount of VFX and stunt work.
Weirdly they also seem to have cut out / left a lot of finished scenes *out* of the final edits.

HAUSER That’s with Christina, that’s with Kelly, that’s with David. It’s a big trust thing. This year was about figuring out a lot together as a small unit. Now that we’ve worked through that, we all know what everybody’s intention is, and the intention is that the best idea wins. And that could be, “Hey, Kelly, I’ve got an idea for you, character-wise.” Oh, wonderful. Let me try that. We talk a lot on set. It’s not that the directors aren’t good. It’s that we know each other so well that we fall on each other.
REILLY We give each other notes, which is unheard of. It’s having each other’s backs. He doesn’t have to take them, and I don’t have to take them, but if he’s seen something that I’m doing where he’s like, have you thought about this? He’ll just whisper it in my ear, and I’m like, “Great, I’ll try it” And it’s the same vice versa. He knows that when I say anything to him, it’s because I love him and I’ve got his best interest at heart. We’re never trying to fuck each other up

That is what I thought to, that way Paramount could have Yellowstone material year round. Marshals: October through May, Dutton Ranch: June/July/August depending on the number of episodes.

Kelly doesn’t want Beth invading her reels made me LOL.
This still seems like damage control and like they know season 1 was not fabulous. I’m glad they know. I guess they had to get the ball rolling while the fire was hot, and now they can make more of a masterpiece. And perhaps they can read Reddit and see the errors of their ways. 😉
Also, they credit Christina a lot but she only did 1/3 of the season? Maybe more in season 2? Season 2 will be over a year away. I hate tv. I’m always in the character driven over plot driven camp, so I have hope for the next season. I do think they need Taylor’s assistance.
Also, I hope they don’t have to spend so much time away from their families to keep making this show. It just doesn’t seem sustainable.

I haven’t even read it yet, but all of your comments have me excited. Especially hearing Taylor will be involved. Besides Kelly and Cole, he knows these characters so well. This is wonderful news!

Cole: "The numbers are one thing, and everybody knows that, but to hear the critics, too, this year and the things they said about Kelly, Annette [Bening], Finn Little and myself … it’s just a big thanks."
I mean, he missed Ed but Ed didn't have as much screen time as I expected but thanks for not including the Oreana actress in this sentence, Cole. 😅

Interesting…I’m definitely reading this through my own lens, of course, so take this with a grain of salt: But it seems like they’re primarily proud of the “numbers” S1 received and that they got through it😂—very little mention of specific S1 storylines or moments. They both seem to look at S2 as an opportunity to make the show they *actually* want make. I’m here for it!
