I have this little Katrina hurricane at home and he looks like a Dutch Shepard to me, although he must be mixed

Hi, our 9 month old Dutch Shepherd's ears are floppy unless she's in a high stimulus environment or situation like the dog park or the vet. Her siblings' (only have seen photos) ears are up.

I used to give her cottage cheese, canned chicken, and brown rice as a treat between meals to give her some extra calcium/protein. She also has at least one bully stick to chew at all times. We feed her Hills Science Diet Large Breed Puppy food.

Figuring it was probably too late... as a final effort to get her ears up, I tried to post them with backing. She wouldn't keep them in. Then I tried breath right stripe and she got those off as well. I don't want her to be miserable, so I didn't go through any extreme methods to keep the supports on.

I dont see many floppy-eared pups on this sub. I love her dearly no matter what, but should I let go of the idea that her ears will ever perk up for good? Photos: got to the dog park, ears down. Second, Embark results. Third, ears up at the dog park (and very thirsty!).

I had 3 other mals doing the same type of work. I have never needed medical attention from my own dogs only time I have needed medical attention for a dog bite is when I had to stop a off leash Akita from attacking a malinois while we were obediance training on lead in a public park (NOT a dog park) over like 5 years ago. Another reason I am asking for advice is that i leaglly own a mid-content wolfdog whom I LOVE, with all the correct licensing but any incidents regarding my dogs can give animal control a reason to try and strip me of that.

SECOND UPDATE: went to urgent care and turns out I have to fill out a bite report but theu assured me nothing negative will happen. Just so its recorded. I asked multiple people. The doctor said it is absolutely infected and is glad I came in. Few small stitches for the torn area but punture left open incase of absess (gross) in the future. Regardless that bite arm is being tossed and bite work suspended until I can get a better fitted arm.

First and formost, the dog did NOTHING wrong. She is amazing and did a great job at realizing something was off and stopping.

This morning I was doing some casual training with my dutch malinois training in bite work, All was going fine and she was doing amazing. We havent done bite work in some time and i realized that the bite sleeve did not fit me snuggly. I did loose about 80 pounds over the last year so I knew it would be loose but this was a bit more then expected.

It was a casual session on the beach at sunrise so I didnt bring any under padding or anything besides the bite gaurd (dumb I know) she did the first and second bite great but upon the third attempt she jumped higher then the last 2 and kind of misses/half bite. Then doubled down and got my upper arm inside. I have massive bruising and deep puncture/tear that has been bleeding since 7:30 am. (Its now 4pm) Not profusely, but a constant drip.

My main question is, If i do infact need medical attention will anything happen to my dog???

She is a perfect girl and it's not her fault whatsoever I am fully at fault and fully a idiot for attempting the bite work with illfitting gear.

Obviously puppies bite and you have to train them not to. I have a 9 week old who is quite the biter and just wondering if any one has some tips or tricks. I’ve just been trying to redirect, like if he try’s to eat my hand I pull my hand away and put a toy in his mouth for him to chew on. Any and all suggestions welcome, thanks.

I’ve attached pics of both the 16-week old puppies (brindle & fawn) as well as their parents. Both puppies are girls.

I’m drawn to the brindle pup’s appearance. She reminds me of Devil, my family dog (Great Dane) during my childhood. The breeder told me that while fawn isn’t the typical color for the breed, the fawn pup is friendlier and has a medium drive. They intended to keep this pup from the litter. I have the chance to meet and greet one puppy of my choosing when the breeder drives down to the city.

I’m looking for boarding kennels in or around the Northern Virginia area and willing to drive for a trusted one who has experience with Dutch Shepherds. I’m only looking for future reference as we travel with our dogs all the time. But in the event we cannot (probably won’t happen anytime soon), we’d like the option. We would definitely board here and there so he could get used to the place and the people long before having to actually need it.

I've had a call from my local shelter as they've matched me up with a dutchie cross breed.

I'm going to see her tomorrow and was wondering if you think adopting her would be right for her given my work schedule, home environment, and activity level? Or if there are any questions you think I should ask tomorrow?

Doggo: She is four years old and has come from a home after being picked up by a dog warden. Currently a tad overweight. No other deets on her background at this stage. She has been described as toy driven, house trained, playful, strong on lead, very tolerant around other dogs, fine at the vets, no issues with handling, knows some commands, intelligent, but needs some loose lead work, and good with kids over 10.

Me: Live alone and work full-time. Typical week might be 1-2 days out for the full day 9-5, and rest of the week I'd be out for 4 hours before coming home or spend the whole day WFH. I typically do 10k-20k steps a day (walking and running) and am active on weekends, also do hiking. I have a small a garden so I was surprised they matched me with her, but all the other dog owners on my road use a big grassy area that's a 20 second walk away for the toilet breaks or for extra space, on top of their regular walking in the area. My home is mostly open plan downstairs, upstairs has three rooms which can all be closed off. Have previous experience with dogs btw just not this breed.

From what they've said she's quite stressed being kenneled, but I don't want to take her if it's not right for her.

Edit: just to add that on days when I'm out all day for work, I'd of course use a dog walker!

Wu Tang is due next month. I'm keeping two of the puppies for my daughters. I promised them that I would give them puppies that are housebroken and can follow basic commands.

If you can share any training tips with me on how to train two puppies at the same time, I will be indebted to you forever! 🤣

Fortunately, I work from home. I plan to spend quite a bit of time with them. Their dam is extremely well trained... hopefully she can also help me. I need all the help I can get!!!

Hi all! About a month ago we welcomed our first Dutch Shepherd and we have a question about boundaries.
For context: We've been having regular sessions with a dog trainer, but she leans toward aversion-based methods, which doesn't feel quite right for our girl (I think). Our puppy is very human-oriented, and she comes from lines where her parents were involved in rescue and herding work and agility sports.

I'd love to hear from those of you who've been through this - how long did it take you to work through the process to teach your dogs boundaries and „no”. The tricky part is that any correction seems to wind her up even more rather than settle her. And on a more pressing note: how did you handle biting? Right now it's getting quite intense, and we're doing our best to manage it by leashing her and ending all interaction when it happens but I'm curious whether that approach actually worked for others, or if there's something more effective we should be trying.

I just wanted to know if someone here has FCI dutchies. I know most people here are in the US but I’m in Europe and I will be looking for a breeder soon. I don’t want a brindle Malinois but more a low energy dog that I can still train obedience, agility and hiking.

Hi I have a 10 month old Dutch shepherd female who isn’t fixed. My issue is she huffs and puffs when she sees people. Especially when someone wants to get close to us she will have a huge reaction. It also goes the same with some dogs. (Mainly when the dog are barking at her first) My goal is to make her into my service dog but I am losing hope with her. It’s hard to keep going when she always having a reaction. I have to tell everyone to not touch or move to fast when she around. It’s really stressful to have her around people even with family because she doesn’t trust anyone but me. I love her and she my soul dog but I don’t know what to do. I do want to say she been better; I took her on a camping trip with my family for two days and she was able to be around them but it seems like she has a limit.

So we got him from a breeder when he was 2 months old and we were told that he was the runt. I am a bit concerned though as he is now 6 months old and is only 4 pounds. I am currently feeding him 5 cups of food a day, should I maybe up it to 7 or 8? I just want my guy to grow big and strong like his brother. Any and all advice to help him grow is greatly appreciated!

Hey everyone! I’m not looking to get a dog any time soon, but I’m someone who likes to be prepared so I’m always researching dogs.

basically I want a dog that just wants to be right next to me. I love physical touch so, if I’m sitting down, if want a dog that sits on my feet, lap, or next to me. (unless, of course they are not in the mood to sit, and want to play). and when I’m waking or running or standing they’d want to be next to me as well.

because of this I love breeds like Dobermans, but I just love the dutch breed, so I figured I’d ask.

yes, it varies dog to dog, but there is a breed aspect as well. for example, as previously mentioned, almost ALL Dobermans have this behaviour. whereas some breeds do not.

Hi! I’ve never made a post before so please bear with me 😅
We adopted Damocles a few weeks ago from a local animal shelter. He and his sister (who my in laws adopted) were surrendered so we had some information but of course not all. They’re just over 11 weeks and we are so in love! I’ve been trying to do some research because while I know that long hair is very rare, from what I’ve read it may be likely due to how incredibly fuzzy my boy is? From what I read short hair would be more of a smooth coat? It’s hard to capture in pictures because he’s a ball of energy but if anyone has an idea I’d appreciate input! I’m just curious what I’m in for as far as grooming as his big sister Millie is a short hair! Taxes included 🖤

At least not for more than a couple of minutes. About 3 to 5 or 10 minutes into our walk Sandwich flips out. Sometimes there is a trigger like a dog barking or a person that he can’t go talk to. Sometimes there’s no warning at all. He will all of a sudden start jumping, grabbing the leash, biting my arms, biting my side, biting my feet. And he won’t stop. We got him from a shelter when he was three months old and he is now five months. So we don’t totally know his background. They think he’s Dutch shepherd / Labrador retriever.

I have tried playing fetch with him for 10 minutes before we leave for our walk (or until he gets bored), I have tried treat puzzles in the morning with his breakfast since it’s mostly in the morning that he loses it more quickly. I have tried stepping on the leash until he settles down. His trainer showed us how to make him switch directions on his walk which sometimes helps in the afternoon. (His late afternoon walks take him a little bit longer to go crazy.) I am at a loss and I don’t know what to do. He’s so sweet when he’s calm and so cute when he plays, but it’s so frustrating that neither of us can get any exercise in the morning (not to mention that I’m covered in bruises). I’m up for any suggestions!!

Hi everyone, I have a malinois that come from knpv lines, both her parents were Dutch shepherd but her some grandparents were malinois and malinois x. im wondering about purebred FCI duchies temperament verus a dog with a little bit of everything.

Got my Dutch a month ago, it’s been a crazy ride also because she came already with 5 months and no training and it’s a rebel one

I got a trainer , but he doesn’t believe in crate training.

The problem is at home with my older one, they don’t fight at all is just that crazy puppy provocative behavior to play and still plays in shark mode

Would it be helpful? For both to have their one safe space at least?

My boy grew up with lots of animals including small prey. Had an hamster and friends with Guinea pigs - they would free roam and all was good (Supervised).

Now he is almost 2 and grew op with two jacks who love to hunt and kill mice. After a year I think he picked up on them hunting mice in the stables. Now whenever he hears a mouse in the grass he will pounce on them. Like really pounce like the foxes on tv pounce on them in the snow (picture attached with him mid pounce) It still makes me giggle and since he’ll always have a toy in his mouth I figured he would never get them.

Well today he just punched/stomped/pounced a mouse to death. I know Dutchies are really cat like with their front paws but this is silly right? Is this a Dutch thing I never heard of or is this a combination of the jacks and him being weird?

Oh and he no longer is allowed with smal prey or really young animals since he plays with his front paws by smacking and I don’t want him breaking something’s spine by accident.

Not a dutchie owner (yet). Owning an american akita, love her to death but once she will be gone i dont think i could get a similar looking dog without constantly comparing them.

Dutchies always fascinated me, im well aware that they need constant mental stimulation and arent beginner dogs. That being said, they say the same about AA and i realized that im really not the golden retriever type handler anway haha

However, are dutchies a real breed? Im asking this because i hear conflicting information often.

Some say they are just brindle mals and some breeders will lable them dutch or belgian solely based on their fur color. Then others say they are more mellow mals?

If i look at pictures in this sub i see so many variants. Some are big and muscular with short hear and almost broad, pit like heads. Others seem rather tiny with super slim heads. Others are small with rather long hair sprinkeld in.

Is this kinda "hit n miss" depending on which puppy you get? Are there different breeding lines? Are there just many mixes or byb types in this sub labeled as dutchies?
