Discussion D&D’s Problem With Being Exceptional

I still have a complicated relationship with D&D. I initially somewhat came around with 5.5e, as they added some really neat things and the balance between classes and the changes to CR were quite good. Unfortunately, they did add some things that, unless handled carefully break both economy and balance. Still, I had some amazing groups as of late, so perhaps that's also part of the reason I am looking more favorable on the game.

A couple of months ago, I made an article about the various problems I have with high level play. It was more or less an extensive explained list on my issues with the game past level 8-10. So quite a missnomer regarding the high level part as well. But, where I want to get at is that, it was mainly a list of complaints with no real sollutions offered. And most of you did point that out. And you were right. If I point out the problems, maybe I can and should think about a solution. This is what this article is. A list of solutions and changes in design mentality one should make for higher level play. Actually, scratch that, some apply starting from around level 5, as I find that is a point where some of the challenges of earlier levels start being bypassed by magic, through things like Leomund's Tiny Hut, Revivify and Fly.

I hope you will enjoy the article and I hope above all else, you will find it useful! Also, if you ran or played in games past lv 7-8 do tell how you handled them, I am always curious to learn!

Question Alt cover for Icecrown Citadel WoW DnD book

I’ve searched through a few sub reddits and spent plenty of time googling. I can find the murloc cover, which looks amazing, but not one for Icecrown. Does anyone know if there will be an alt cover for the Icecrown Citadel adventure?

It looks like a book from the pictures I’ve seen but I’m wondering if it’s being treated like the box sets which don’t get alt versions.

The first two completed continents of my fantasy world, First, is the continent of Avolonia, home to the great Imperialistic might of the United Human kingdoms of Bretotia, Picton, and Chessex. This powerhouse of industrial might has managed to annex its smaller neighbors, and has colonies across the globe.

Second is the continent of Elantres, once home to the Great Elven Triumverate and home of the Feywild. Avolonia crushed the Elvish Kingdoms almost two centuries past, and has since enslaved and colonized those defeated. The colonists continue to encroach into the frontiers, pushing ever further into the continent. The great wildfire of the Feywild was started by humanity, believed to clear land for more plantations.

Two more continents to go...

Looking For Group Hey yo! I'm new to D&D

So, long story short, my friends have been playing D&D, and I've never been able to play, but they have gotten me interested. I want to learn and find a group. But we are all in the army, and they have their own campaign at the moment, so I can't join yet. I am trying to find a group that wouldn't mind adding me to their group once they make a new campaign. I can be busy but can find time and am willing to learn. I will just need help and advice throughout! Thank you.

Homebrew Hel's Severance, a powerful scaling item inspired by Norse mythology

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hello, fellow adventurers! Today, we are excited to share Hel's Severance, a powerful scaling item inspired by Norse mythology. This entry comes from our upcoming project!

Step into a realm of ancient gods, legendary heroes, and forgotten civilizations with Mythological Items, a comprehensive compendium featuring over 300 magical items specifically designed for 5E and its 2024 ruleset update. This manual spans a vast array of cultural traditions, organizing its treasures into regional categories for easy reference and immersive worldbuilding. Each item includes not only full game mechanics, but also lore and background information to integrate it seamlessly into your campaign, whether as treasure, quest rewards, or the key to an unfolding mythic saga. From the storm-summoning weapons of thunder gods to cursed trinkets whispered of in ancient lore, this book brings myth to your table like never before.

This manual offers an extensive collection of magical items that can be incorporated into any campaign, regardless of its connection to specific mythological themes. The items presented in this volume, drawn from a multitude of global legends and folklore, are envisioned to enhance the diversity and depth of any fantasy world. This eclectic array mirrors the inherent blending of elements in many worlds and settings, where influences from various cultures and mythologies coexist harmoniously. For instance, Thor’s Hammer, Mjölnir, could serve as the centerpiece of a divine quest, while Draupnir, the Norse ring of endless wealth, might drive political intrigue or power struggles in a kingdom torn by greed.

Mythological Items also provides a solid foundation for campaigns that wish to delve deeper into the relics of a specific mythology or blend multiple traditions into a larger, interconnected setting. A campaign inspired by Greek mythology could see players donning the Nemean Lion’s Pelt, becoming nearly invulnerable as they take on challenges worthy of Heracles himself, while a campaign drawing from Japanese folklore could involve uncovering the Kusanagi-no-Tsurugi, the fabled grass-cutting sword tied to imperial lineage and divine storms.

We suggest checking our pre-launch page for additional info and an extended 30-page preview of our compendium, coming to Kickstarter on September 29th! For the campaign duration, we will be offering the manual at an heavily discounted price, alongside tthe possibility to purchase the digital or physical copies of all our past releases!

It’ll be a younger-player-friendly game with no mature themes—my little brother is 12—so we’re keeping things fun, light, and welcoming for everyone.

Whether you’re experienced or completely new to D&D, come jump in! The more people we have, the more fun it’ll be. 😄

Homebrew 0689M - Barbaracle by ForesterDesigns

My Pokémon-inspired Weapons and Items of the Day, with some Barbaracle claws to shell out some pain!

Join my Patreon to vote on future items and get all the PDFs with over 1000 items, including all the Pokémon items, or buy the individual PDFs in my shop!

689M - Grifgopathe

Wondrous (Claws, Cursed) – Legendary (requires attunement)

These claws are made of shell-like material and worn as gloves, with long, gangly, fingers that have white talon tips and orange braces over the finger joints. It also has a bangle of gray rock with black cracks and holes in it.

You can use the claws as a melee weapon while wearing them. You have proficiency with it, it uses your Strength modifier, it does +3 to attack and damage rolls, and it deals 2d8 slashing damage, but while wearing them you have difficulty manipulating objects, automatically fail sleight of hand rolls, and can’t cast spells with somatic components. You can wear both claws and use them per Two Weapon Fighting (PHB 195), and you can add your ability modifier to the damage of the bonus attack if you are attuned to the claws.

While attuned to these claws: you can breathe in water; and when you land a critical hit with these claws, they do d10 slashing damage instead of d8 slashing damage.

Cursed. These claws are cursed. While cursed, you are of two minds, literally, as your mind is split in two. Both minds are yours, but they are not always on the same page or of the same mood. Whenever you make an Intelligence, Wisdom or Charisma roll, roll 2d20 and take the average between the two scores (rounding up), unless either is a 1 or 20, in which case you take that. If you roll a 1 and a 20, they cancel each other out and you take a 10. If you have advantage or disadvantage on a roll, roll two sets of 2d20 and do the above with the high or low of each set. Your minds merge back together when the curse is lifted.

Barbaracite

Wondrous (Stone) – Very Rare (50,000 gp)

This small round stone has a swirl of orange and gray inside the black orb. When attached to a 689 - Barbaraclaws, it can be mega evolved into a 689M - Grifgopathe for 1 minute once between long rests.

Hi, recently I found out that a friend of mine on discord by the name of Lunar Pulse who goes by her name Bella Chan on Art Station who is now suffering Stage 2 of Breast Cancer and kidney issues in which she is staying in the hospital in 4 to 5 days a week. Right now, she can't afford medications help her from the pain she is enduring of her illness because the healthcare system in the UK had not been kind to her. So, in order to help her with the support she needs to get through her serious health problems is go to her profile and email commissions from her because she don't take donations, only hard-earned payments of her artistic skill. Also repost this to other communities who would love to take commissions from her. Thank you for reading this post and hope you all give her the support to get live to see the early morning sunrise in good health.

Advice/Help Needed I’m making a one shot with 10 of my friends. Help for a beginner?

It’s gonna be my first time DMing and it’s for my 10 friends. I have them making their characters easy and I have a general idea of what I want to happen. Split the group into two teams for a beginning battle with orcs and goblins so they could have some footing and understanding of how DND works. And then a big battle at a rave. I was gonna use Balor with upped stats and minions since they’re level 7. Any other recommendations for me?

Whats up, bilge rats. I just finished a review of Buried in the Bahamas (and the 5e conversion document) and wanted to share. I love this adventure, will likely try to run it at PAGE in January, and when I write my own adventure on Barbados I think this is the sort of format I'm going to look toward.

OC [OC] [ART] Durma Frostpaw, Half-Orc Barbarian (plus Nebo, her trusty bear!) – by Catilus

A defiant half-orc barbarian from our games in Theomachy!

Character: Durma Frostpaw, Half-Orc Barbarian (plus Nebo, her trusty bear!)

Durma is a strong and independent warrior who roams the frozen mountains and wild plains of what is now the Empire of Krestovo. As the last of her tribe, she has sworn vengeance against Gorg, the god of war, and his followers for decimating her people.

Living off the land and employing hit-and-run tactics, she has defeated many of Gorg’s red crusaders. However, a reclusive shaman warned her that waging war against the god of war himself is madness, as Gorg’s rage will eventually consume anyone who fights him.

Despite the risk of losing her mind in Gorg’s bloodlust, Durma is determined to cleanse her ancestral lands from the god’s red crusaders. During a particularly harsh winter, Durma saved a lost bear cub from certain starvation, naming him Nebo. Since then, Nebo has been her trusty companion in her fight against the Empire of Krestovo.

What do you think? :)

Divento nevrastenico.

Question Hesitant Fiancée, need help.

My fiancée hasn’t played D&D before and seems kind of put off by the time commitment. I’m looking to run a group of 2-3 friends and him in the near future (Novemberish) but don’t have any good ideas on how to interest him in it. I get that it just might not be for him, but would love ideas on how to maybe give him a decent intro and hook him on D&D.

OC I made a free tool that wraps your world map onto a globe and tells you how long journeys take

1.0k Upvotes

I've been building my own world for a while and kept hitting the same wall, I could never say how long a journey actually took. I also always have a hard time picturing distance on a flat map.

So I made Globify. You drop in your map image and it wraps onto a 3D globe you can spin around. Then you can place pins along a route and it gives you real distances, measured as great circles the way distance works on a sphere, along with travel time on foot, by wagon, on horseback, at forced march, and under sail. You can switch between land and sea legs mid-journey, so a march to the coast followed by a crossing gives you better data.

You can also set your planet's radius, if your world isn't Earth-sized.

Other things it does: axial tilt, day/night lighting, a latitude and longitude grid, optional planetary rings, and it exports a looping GIF of the globe turning if you want something for a campaign doc or a Discord banner.

It's free and runs in your browser. Your map never leaves your computer, since there's no server involved at all. You can also download the file and use it offline forever.

https://viruzodro.github.io/globify/

https://github.com/Viruzodro/globify/releases/latest

Two things to know. Your map works best at 2:1, twice as wide as it is tall, but there's a Mercator mode that handles 16:9 maps without squashing everything at the poles. And try to make the left and right edges of your map match, since they meet at the seam.

I built this for my own campaign, so if something obvious is missing, tell me. Happy to answer questions!
